With the upcoming school year rapidly approaching, it’s time to do a little seasonal sprucing. We can help make your back-to-school season go smoothly with some great tips and tricks for getting your home and family ready for the upcoming school year. Instead of having to buy all-new everything, let’s look at ways you can restore your child’s favorite outfit, shoes and even refresh their backpack.

We won’t stop there. We’ll also take a look at some must-have laundry room essentials and how to tackle some of those germy situations by using OxiClean™ Laundry & Home Sanitizer. We’ll walk you through the steps to use them so when your child brings home germs or stains, you’ll be ready to tackle the ones typically caused by school, fun and sports.

Tip 1: Take inventory of back-to-school items

First things first, start by taking inventory of all the clothes and shoes that still fit your kids. Children grow so quickly, which is why you want to get the full life out of all their clothes and shoes. Once you’ve gone through their clothes, take a look at items like backpacks and school supplies. Set aside any stained clothes, shoes or supplies.

Tip 2: Refreshing their favorite outfit and shoes

Now that you’ve picked out some of their favorite clothes and shoes to be used for school, it’s time to make them back-to-school ready. In order to remove stains and bring these clothes and shoes back to life, your most effective tool is OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover. It’s chlorine-free and color-safe, making it the go-to product for tough stains on laundry and shoes!

For this step, you’ll want to gather the following items:

For clothes, you’ll start by making the pre-soaking mixture.

  • Add warm water to your plastic container.
  • Add OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover filled to line 2 to 4 per gallon of water and mix until completely dissolved.
  • Submerge stained items in the solution.
  • Allow the items to soak for 1-6 hours. The more severe the stains, the longer you should let them soak.
  • Add 1 scoop (filled to line 1) of OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover to the washing machine along with your favorite laundry detergent before adding laundry.
  • Wash as normal.

For shoes:

  • Make the pre-soak mixture by following the first three steps listed above.
  • Submerge the shoes in the pre-soak mixture.
  • Soak for 1-6 hours depending on the severity of the stain.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Allow the shoes to dry fully.

Tip 3: Stock-Up on School Supplies

Nothing screams back to school more than going shopping for school supplies. Check your school’s website for the current school supplies list and bring it with you to the store so you don’t forget any of those items. Be sure to check off any items from that list that you’ll be reusing (like scissors, ruler or a backpack).

Once you’re stocked up on school supplies, make sure to organize them and label any items that could use it.

Tip 4: Restore an old backpack

Why buy a new backpack when you can make an old one look new? It’s easier than ever to restore a backpack, at least if you have two essential tools: OxiClean™ Max Force™ Spray and OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover.

Start off by pre-treating tough stains on the backpack. Spray OxiClean™ Max Force™ Spray directly onto the spot or stain until saturated, and then allow it to sit for 5 minutes or even up to a week, depending on the severity of the stain. Then just simply add a scoop of OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover filled to line 1 to the washing machine drum. Then add the backpack and your favorite detergent.  We recommend running a normal wash cycle, using the warmest water the backpack fabric will accept.

Tip 5: Create a homework station with a supply caddy

Having a designated area for homework will make it easier for your child to do their homework. You’ll want to choose an area that’s well-lit and has a flat writing surface, enough space for them and supplies within reaching distance.

Update the homework station with a homework caddy. The caddy should be stocked with common homework supplies like pens, pencils, scissors, crayons, colored pencils, paper and any other items they’ll need while doing their homework.

Keep the homework station disinfected. To do that use OxiClean™ Laundry & Home Sanitizer, it will kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses* (when used as directed) around the home.

Start off by pre-cleaning the surface area to get rid of noticeable dirt and grime. Fill the scoop to the top twice (269.4g) and add to 1 gallon of water in a large plastic container. Apply the mixture to the surface area until it is visibly wet. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes to kill bacteria and 5 minutes to kill viruses. Finish off by wiping the area clean with a sponge or rag. Now the homework station is clean and disinfected.

Tip 6: Set up an eating station

Setting up a breakfast and snack area for them to eat will control some mess and give them more responsibilities. Also, creating a place for quick-grab items will empower your kids to help pack their own lunch or grab snacks after school. Using clear plastic containers to hold those quick-grab items like cereal, chips, fruit cups, juice boxes and fruit snacks will help the area stay organized.

Tip 7: Family schedule

It’s no secret that back-to-school means a busier schedule. Creating and maintaining a family schedule or calendar will allow you to keep track of extracurricular activities, school events and those extremely busy days when carpooling is essential.

Keep track of your family’s schedule by using a whiteboard calendar. It can be attached to the refrigerator or another common area. Color-code each family member by using different dry erase markers and reuse the calendar from month to month.

Tip 8: Bring sports uniforms back to life

Speaking of extracurricular activities, it’s time to switch your focus to sports uniforms. As we all know, sports uniforms rarely stay clean. They can also be really expensive to replace year after year.

We always recommend acting fast after the big game, and getting your kid’s uniforms into the laundry room as soon as you can. It’s always the sooner the better, when it comes to pre-treating stains, setting up a pre-soak, and getting stained clothes into the laundry machine. Running a load of laundry with OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover will also go a long way in keeping sports uniforms game-day-ready. Another pro-tip, try to keep your kid’s sports uniforms organized separately from their everyday clothes in their closet or dresser. That way, they won’t be grabbing their uniform for everyday wear and play, extending their uniform’s life even further.

Tip 9: Laundry schedule

Teaching kids about sorting clothes and laundry schedules will add some responsibility to their days and will help you in the long run. Set up a hamper in their room so they learn to clean up after themselves. Invest in a hamper with dividers in them so they can sort their clothes by color.

If they have stained clothes, encourage them to give those clothes to an adult so they can treat any stains before they have time to set in.
