The AmazonBasics brand is the company’s answer to affordable everyday products. We tried the AmazonBasics Beach Towel, a 100 percent cotton towel sold in a set of two for under $20. We took the attractive cabana-striped towels out for a day by the ocean to test the material’s absorbency, then threw them in the wash several times to see how they held up. How did they compare to other beach towels on the market? And does Amazon deliver on their promise for high quality and low prices? We found out.

Material: Durable terrycloth cotton

These towels are made with 100 percent ringspun cotton. Ringspun means that different lengths of cotton strands are twisted together into strong, soft yarn, resulting in plush, durable terrycloth towels. We found that this towel is prone to snags. In fact, several threads were already undone right out of the package, but not so many that it caused alarm.

The threads picked up some sand, but we were able to shake it off easily. And after a dip in the ocean, the fabric did a good job of drying us off.

Once out on the sand, the towel performed much like others during a day at the beach. The threads picked up some sand, but we were able to shake it off easily. And after a dip in the ocean, the fabric did a good job of drying us off. The towels themselves are not quick-dry, though, so consider how you might use them. They aren’t the best choice for, say, keeping the seats of your car protected during the drive home. We made that mistake and were left with damp seats.

Texture: Super soft

The towels aren’t as thick as other options, but thanks to the long ringspun fibers, they have a soft texture. Both sides are threaded, enhancing the softness. We found the thinness of the towels to be an advantage. Because they aren’t overly thick, we easily fit two towels in a beach bag and still had plenty of room for other beach necessities.

Washing: Softer after the first wash

The towels are machine-washable, but reviews complaining of excessive lint made us nervous. The tag suggests washing separately before use to reduce this. We were pleased with how the towel behaved after a cycle through the washer and dryer; they did not produce excess lint—nor did we notice extra lint when using the first time. The towels also came out of the dryer even softer than they were right out of the package. Because of the aforementioned broken threads, we weren’t sure how the towels would hold up in the wash, and we did notice several more threads had come loose.

Price: An absolute bargain

At just $18.99 for two towels, the price is highly competitive. It breaks down to about $9.50 per towel, which is less than even the cheapest options in stores. Assuming they hold up, these towels are a bargain. Keep in mind, though, that at 30 x 60 inches, they’re on the smaller side, so you may be getting less towel for your money; towels that are only slightly more expensive tend to be larger. If you are a tall person or want to make sure that your lounge chair is fully covered, it may be worthwhile to search for a bigger beach towel.

Competition: More expensive, but with extra features

Another popular option comes from Wetcat, which sells a 100 percent cotton towel for around $17. Though it’s almost double the price of one AmazonBasics towel, you’ll get extra benefits. The Wetcat Original Turkish Beach Towel is larger, at 37 x 70 inches, and it’s made of the same cotton material, but the texture is much thinner for a highly absorbent and quick-drying towel. These features may be a step up from the AmazonBasics option, but you’ll have to weigh whether the extra cost is worth it to you.

Final Verdict

A good budget towel for your next beach trip

Looking to stock up on affordable towels for a beach weekend? You’ll love the AmazonBasics Beach Towels and still have money to treat yourself to an oceanside margarita. However, the long-term durability is questionable, as the threads are prone to breakage. And though larger than bath towels, they’re still smaller than others meant for the beach. But they do what beach towels need to do at a cheap price—keep you dry and cozy after a long day in the water.
