The American Heritage Girls (AHG) program has six Program Emphases. They include Life Skill Enhancement, Developing Teamwork and Building Confidence, Social Development, Girl Leadership, Character Development, and Spiritual Development.

The Life Skill Enhancement emphasis gives girls the opportunity to learn and practice skills as they earn badges. The badge program is progressive, so as girls move through each level, they learn a new set of skills.

The badges have different colored borders to indicate the level for which the badge was earned. Tenderheart badges have a blue border; Explorers have a red border; Pioneers/Patriots are bordered in white, and the Stars & Stripes required badges have a gold border.

At the time of publication, there are 92 different badges that members of the American Heritage Girls can earn. But the organization cautions against trying to earn too many badges.  Their Girl Handbook says this:

"Keep in mind that earning badges is just one part of AHG.  Earning too many badges can lead to girl burnout, so try to find a balance between pushing yourself to learn new skills through badge work and the other great parts of the AHG program."

Girls can earn the badges as an individual or as a troop.  This allows the members to pursue interests that might not be shared by the other girls in the troop.

The robust AHG badge program has six "frontiers of skill."  Each frontier has between 13 and 19 badges that can be earned.
