Anti-Rebound Car Seats - Should You Buy an ARB Car Seat?

Some car seats available today are advertised as having anti-rebound features. Most often it's an anti-rebound foot or bar. Sometimes the name of the car seat might contain the abbreviation "ARB."

What Is An Anti-Rebound Bar?

An anti-rebound bar is a piece near the foot of the car seat (near the baby's feet) that controls the rebound during and after a crash. Rebound is movement after the initial crash. For rear-facing babies, since the head area of their car seat is typically not...MORE braced against anything, the rebound usually means the car seat bounces up and back toward the vehicle seatback. The rebound forces can be severe enough to allow a rear-facing child to strike the vehicle seatback. Most of the time, though, the child is cocooned inside the car seat shell well enough that the rebound doesn't cause injury.

Any time you can minimize the motion in a crash, though, the potential for injury is also reduced. The added stability provided by an anti-rebound bar or foot could lessen the risk of injury to a child in a crash. Anti-rebound features are not a federally required car seat feature in the U.S.

An anti-rebound bar fits against the vehicle seatback and prevents the car seat from moving as much. It is only used on rear-facing car seats. Only a few car seat models sold in the U.S. have an anti-rebound feature. It may be part of the car seat itself, or there may be a bar on the stay-in-car base of an infant car seat. There are advantages to both styles. When the bar is on the base, it doesn't interfere as much with taking a long-legged baby in and out of the car seat. However, when the bar is on the seat itself, you can take advantage of the added safety even if you're not using the base to install the seat.

A similar anti-rebound feature is the anti-rebound foot. The foot folds out from beneath the car seat for use while rear-facing. It works in the same way as the anti-rebound bar, just in a different shape. Again, the anti-rebound foot is only used while rear-facing to control rebound. When the car seat is used forward-facing, the foot is folded underneath and becomes part of the base.

All of the car seats below have an anti-rebound feature.
