Apple Dumplings with Cinnamon Syrup

In this recipe, sliced apples are encased in a soft dough. The apple dumplings are baked with the flavorful syrup.

Serve this wonderful apple dessert warm with a scoop of ice cream. 

What You'll Need

  • 2 to 2 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 to 6 Granny Smith or other cooking apples, cored, peeled, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for sprinkling on apples
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • Syrup:
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • heavy cream or ice cream, optional

How to Make It

1. Heat the oven to  375° F (190° C/Gas 5). Lightly butter a large, shallow baking dish.

2. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Gradually add milk, stirring to make a soft dough. Roll dough into a 1/8" thick rectangle on a lightly floured surface; cut into 5-inch squares.

3. Place 3 or 4 pieces of apple on each square of dough. Sprinkle each with about 2 teaspoons sugar and a light sprinkling cinnamon and nutmeg to taste; dot with a few pieces of butter.

Moisten edges of each dumpling with water; bring corners to center, pinching edges to seal. Repeat with the remaining apples and dough.

4. Place dumplings 1 inch apart in the prepared baking dish.

5. Combine 2 cups sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 2 cups hot water and 1/4 cup melted butter; stir to dissolve sugar. Pour syrup over dumplings.

6. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown.

Serve hot with a drizzling of cream or a scoop of ice cream.
