A simple soft dough is wrapped around the sliced apples and then the apples are baked with a delicious syrup.The apples are flavored with sugar and spices before they're encased in the dough.

Serve this wonderful apple dessert warm with a scoop of ice cream. 

What You'll Need

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 10 tablespoons butter (or shortening)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4-6 Granny Smith apples (or other cooking apples, cored, peeled, and thinly sliced)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for sprinkling on apples
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter (cut into small pieces)
  • For the Syrup:
  • 2 cups granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)

How to Make It

  1. Heat the oven to  375 F (190 C/Gas 5).
  2. Lightly butter a large, shallow baking dish.
  3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; cut in the butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Gradually add the milk, stirring to make a soft dough. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 1/8-inch thick rectangle. cut the rolled out dough into 5-inch squares.
  4. Place several pieces of apple on each square of dough. Sprinkle each with about 2 teaspoons sugar and a light sprinkling cinnamon and nutmeg to taste; dot with a few pieces of butter. Moisten edges of each dumpling with water; bring corners to center, pinching edges to seal. Repeat with the remaining apples and dough.
  1. Place dumplings 1 inch apart in the prepared baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, combine 2 cups sugar, 2 cups of water, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/4 cup melted butter; bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Pour the syrup over the dumplings.
  3. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown.
  4. Serve hot with a drizzling of cream or a scoop of ice cream.
