These apples are flavored with honey and cinnamon, along with raisins and sugar. The apples are simmered with a spiced sauce and raisins. This recipe for baked apples with cinnamon red-hots is another popular way to serve whole apples. Or you might like Sharon's slow cooker baked apples.

Use a good firm apple in this. Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Gala, and Jonagold are good choices.

Feel free to add some crunch to the apples with chopped toasted pecans or walnuts, or sprinkle granola over the apples.

What You'll Need

  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • a few drops red food coloring, optional
  • 3/4 cup raisins
  • 6 medium to large apples

How to Make It

In a large, deep saucepan or Dutch oven, combine the sugar, water, honey, cinnamon, food coloring, if using, and raisins; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low.

Peel and core the apples; add to the syrup. Spoon some of the syrup over the apples.

Cover and simmer in the hot syrup until the apples are tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Wit ha slotted spoon, place apples in dessert bowls. To serve, use a slotted spoon to spoon raisins in center of each apple.

Spoon syrup over each serving.

Tips and Variations

  • Sprinkle chopped toasted pecans or walnuts over the apples just before serving.
  • Sprinkle a spoonful of granola over the apples just before serving. 
  • Use 1/4 cup of brown sugar and 1/4 cup of maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Replace the honey with golden cane syrup, such as Lyle's or Steen's.
