Aquamarine is a beautiful blue-green stone with calming and balancing properties. It’s also the birthstone for people born in the month of March. The word “aquamarine” comes from the Latin words for “water” and “of the sea.” It’s easy to see why the stone has its name, given its appearance. The stone's blue color comes from traces of iron.

Meaning and Uses

Aquamarine is used for many healing purposes. It has a shielding effect on your energy field and has even been used for physical protection during battle and at sea. The stone is said to help you sift through energy and information, create mental clarity, and soothe an overactive mind; it's even used to improve the intellect.

The stone possesses a kind energy that helps us to be more compassionate and less judgmental. The color of aquamarine is also connected to the wood element in feng shui, which can help us to cultivate loving kindness. It has a soft, flowing yin energy, similar to the moon.

The alignment of the chakras can be improved by the balancing properties of aquamarine. It has a special connection to the throat chakra and can help to improve communication. It also connects us to our higher levels of consciousness as well our higher self, making it a great stone to work with during meditation.

Uses in Feng Shui

One way to work with aquamarine in the context of feng shui is to place it in a particular area of the feng shui bagua map. The bagua is an energetic map that feng shui practitioners lay over a space, and it allows us to see more connections between your home and what may be going on in your life.

Activate Xun, the Wealth Corner

The Xun area of the bagua map is also known as the wealth corner. If you’re standing in the front door looking in, the far left corner of the home is the wealth area. This position of the bagua map is related to the wood element. Not only is Xun connected to financial wealth and abundance, it also represents how we value ourselves. You may want to place an aquamarine crystal in the wealth corner of your home with the intention of caring for yourself with love and compassion as well as releasing any judgments that you have toward yourself. You can also set the intention to release any old patterns that may be holding you back when it comes to self-love or abundance, so that you can make room for new, supportive beliefs and actions.

Activate Kun, the Love Corner

The love corner, called Kun, is related to marriage and partnerships. The Kun area is the part of your home that is the furthest corner on the right side, when looking into your home from the front door. Try activating this area of your home if you want to attract a partner. Aquamarine would be especially aligned in this corner if you’re looking to invite softness and compassion into your relationships. Try placing aquamarine in this area with the intention of tapping into your yin (receptive side) or inviting loving communication in this area of your life. Kun is related to your relationship with yourself, too, so you may want to set an intention for how you want to communicate with yourself.

Wood Energy

Aquamarine’s blue-green color beautifully embodies the energy of wood. The wood element is connected to new beginnings, healing, and growth. You can place a piece of aquamarine in your home with the intention of jump-starting a new chapter for expansion and joy in your life.

Meditation Area

The area of your home you use as a meditation space would benefit from the energy of aquamarine. You can meditate with a piece (or have one located on your meditation altar) to open yourself up to higher states of consciousness and spiritual awareness and to cultivate courage and inner strength.

Cleansing and Charging Crystals

Because crystals can absorb energy, it’s a good idea to cleanse and charge them often. There are many ways to cleanse your crystals. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Smudge your aquamarine with a cleansing herb, like palo santo.
  • Visualize bright white light filling and enveloping your aquamarine crystal, and envision any negative energy being cleared away.
  • Soak your crystal in saltwater overnight (or longer). This can be an especially good way to cleanse aquamarine, given its connection to the ocean.

You’ll also want to charge your crystal. Since aquamarine is associated with the moon, try placing it somewhere overnight where it can absorb moonlight, like on a windowsill. The charge will be especially potent during a new or full moon.
