    Lying in a crib, propped up in a car seat, sitting in a swing, nestled in someone's arms -- sometimes these positions aren't the best for fancy outfits. But you still want to look pulled together and cute in for your close-up or when you have people cooing all over you, right? Wow them with this little beauty -- comfortable, soft, chic and unique, plus it works for boys or girls! It would work perfectly for holiday portraits, or how about it as part of a no-fuss going home outfit?

    Material...MOREs:

    • 2 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4) hanks of KnitPicks Bare Swish DK superwash merino, or about 492 (615, 676, 738, 861, 984) yards of DK weight yarn of your choice
    • One pair size 5 US (3.75 mm) needles
    • Cable needle, stitch holders, stitch markers
    • Scissors, tape measure and yarn needle
    • 13 5/8 inch (16 mm) diameter machine washable buttons

    Gauge:

    • 6 stitches and 9 rows to 1 inch in Stockinette Stitch
    • 3.5 inches over the 25 stitches that make up rope cable/diamond/rope cable pattern sequence
    • 2 inches over the 17 stitches that make up diamond pattern + 2 reverse stockinette stitches either side

    Size:

    Newborn (3 Months, 6 Months, 12 Months, 18 Months, 24 Months)

    Finished chest size: 18 (20, 21, 22, 23, 24) inches

    Finished length: 18 (19, 20, 21, 22, 24) inches

    Knit the Legs

    1. Cast on 54 (62, 62, 66, 70, 74) stitches and work for 1 inch in 2x2 ribbing as follows - K1, *K2, P2. Repeat from * to last stitch, K1 - ending with a wrong side row. Increase 1 (0, 1) stitch at each end on last row. 56 (62, 64, 68, 72, 74) stitches.
    2. Establish patterns as follows: P2 (3, 4, 5, 6, 6), commence Rope Cable 1 chart at Row 1, P2, commence Double Moss Diamond Cable chart at Row 1, P2, commence Rope Cable 2 chart at Row 1, P2 (6, 6, 8, 10, 12), commence Rope Cable 1 chart at Row 1, P2,...MORE commence Double Moss Diamond Cable chart at Row 1, P2, commence Rope Cable 2 chart at Row 1, P2 (3, 4, 5, 6, 6).
    3. Working established cable patterns with Reverse Stockinette stitches between motifs, continue until piece measures 6 (7, 7.5, 8, 10, 11) inches, ending with a wrong side row. Note: after working the complete Double Moss Diamond chart through once, you work rows 3-20 only on subsequent repeats.
    4. Leave stitches on a holder, then make second leg.

    Join Legs and Knit the Body

    Join the Legs:

    1. With right side facing, take first leg and work across row as follows: P1, M1, work in pattern to last stitch, M1, place marker, P1.
    2. Do not turn work. Cast on 4 stitches using thumb method.
    3. Take second leg with right side facing and work across it as follows using yarn from first leg: P1, place marker, M1, work in pattern to last stitch, M1, P1.
    4. The legs are now joined and there are 120 (132, 136, 144, 152, 156) stitches.
    5. Work across the next row, keeping the increased stitches in...MORE Reverse Stockinette and the center 6 stitches between the markers in Stockinette Stitch while keeping the rest of the patterns as established.

    Work the Body:

    1. Starting on the right side, work the Braid Cable Chart on the center 6 stitches between the markers, starting at row 1. Keep the other patterns as already established for the legs.
    2. Work in pattern until piece measures 14.5 (15, 15.75, 16.5, 17.25, 19) inches, ending with a wrong side row.

    Work the Fronts, Upper Back and Sleeves

    Divide For Armholes and Right Front:

    1. Work 29 (32, 33, 35, 37, 38), turn and work on these stitches first. This is the Right Front. Place remaining stitches on a holder.
    2. Work straight until Right Front measures 16 (17, 18, 19, 19.5, 21.5) inches from cast on edge, ending with a wrong side row.
    3. Bind off 5 stitches at beginning of next row, then 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 4) stitches at beginning of the next 2 right side rows. 18 (21, 22, 22, 24, 25) stitches.
    4. Continue in pattern (as possible -- when there are too...MORE few stitches to form the Double Moss Diamond, just keep the border in Stockinette and the inside in Double Moss Stitch). When armhole measures 3.5 (4, 4.25, 4.5, 4.75, 5) inches, leave stitches on a holder.

    Work the Back:

    1. Join yarn with right side facing and work across next 62 (68, 70, 74, 78, 80) stitches. This is the Back.  Leave remaining 29 (32, 33, 35, 37, 38) stitches on the holder.
    2. Work these back stitches straight, keeping all established patterns, until armhole measures 3.5 (4, 4.25, 4.5, 4.75, 5) inches and matches Right Front.
    3. Leave stitches on a holder.

    Work the Left Front:

    1. Join yarn at right side and work across remaining 29 (32, 33, 35, 37, 38) stitches.
    2. Work straight until Left Front measures 16 (17, 18, 19, 19.5, 21.5) inches from bottom of leg opening, ending with a right side row.
    3. Bind off 5 stitches at beginning of next row, then 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 4) stitches at beginning of the next 2 right side rows. 18 (21, 22, 22, 24, 25) stitches.
    4. Continue in pattern (as possible -- when there are too few stitches to form the Double Moss Diamond, just keep the border in Stockinette and the inside in Double Moss Stitch). When armhole measures 3.5 (4, 4.25, 4.5, 4.75, 5) inches and matches Back and Right Front, leave stitches on a holder.

    Knit the Sleeves (Make 2):

    1. Cast on 30 (34, 38, 38, 42, 42) stitches and work 2 inches in 2x2 ribbing. Increase 1 stitch at end of the last row. There are 31 (35, 39, 39, 43, 43) stitches.
    2. Establish patterns as follows: P3 (5, 7, 7, 9, 9), commence Rope Cable 1 chart at Row 1, P2, commence Double Moss Diamond Cable chart at Row 1, P2, commence Rope Cable 2 chart at Row 1, P3 (5, 7, 7, 9, 9).
    3. Work 1 more rows, ending on wrong side.
    4. Continuing in patterns as established, increase 1 stitch at each end on next and every following 4th row until there are 47 (53, 57, 59, 63, 65) stitches.
    5. Work straight without further increases until sleeve measures 5.5 (6, 6.5, 7.5, 8, 8.5) inches.
    6. Bind off all stitches.

    Finishing

    Put the Suit Together:

    1. Fold the 2 Fronts across the Back with the wrong side facing out. Place live stitches back on needles.
    2. Work 3-needle bind off across tops of shoulders to join the seams.
    3. Turn work right side out. Sew sleeves into armholes.
    4. Sew sleeve seams.

    Button Bands (Girls):

    Right:

    1. With right side facing, pick up and knit 108 (116, 116, 124, 132, 140) stitches up the Right Front edge, beginning at the leg cast on and ending at the neck edge.
    2. Work in 2x2 rib for half an inch, ending with a...MORE wrong side row.
    3. Buttonholes: Rib 4, yo, K/P2tog (depending on part of rib), rib 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 15), yo, K/P2tog, rib 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 15), yo, K/P2tog, rib 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 15), yo, K/P2tog, rib to end. You have made 4 buttonholes.
    4. Continue in 2x2 rib until band measures 1 inch.
    5. Bind off all stitches in rib.

    Left:

    1. With right side facing, pick up and knit 108 (116, 116, 124, 132, 140) stitches down the Left Front edge, beginning at the neck edge and ending at the leg cast on.
    2. Work in 2x2 rib for half an inch, ending with a wrong side row.
    3. Buttonholes: *Rib 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 15), yo, K/P2tog (depending on part of rib). Repeat from * until there are 4 stitches left, rib 4. You have made 8 buttonholes.
    4. Continue in 2x2 rib until band measures 1 inch.
    5. Bind off all stitches in rib.

    Inside Leg:

    1. With right side facing, pick up and knit 96 (104, 108, 112, 116, 120) stitches up the Right Front edge, beginning at the leg cast on, going across the leg join, and going down the Left Front to the leg cast on.
    2. Work in 2x2 rib for 1 inch, ending with a wrong side row.
    3. Bind off all stitches in rib.

    Neckline:

    1. With right side facing, pick up and knit 72 (76, 76, 80, 84, 88) stitches for neckband across Right Front button band, Right Front, Back, Left Front, and Left Front button band.
    2. Work in 2x2 rib for 1 row.
    3. Work in 2x2 rib until 5 stitches remain, K/P2tog, yo, rib 3.
    4. Work in 2x2 rib for three-quarters of an inch, ending with a wrong side row.
    5. Bind off all stitches in rib.

    Button Bands (Boys):

    Right:

    1. With RS facing, pick up and knit 108 (116, 116, 124, 132, 140) stitches up the Right Front edge, beginning at the leg cast on and ending at the neck edge.
    2. Work in 2x2 rib for half an inch, ending with a wrong side row.
    3. Buttonholes: *Rib 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 15), yo, K/P2tog (depending on part of rib).  Repeat from * until there are 4 stitches left, rib 4. You have made 8 buttonholes.
    4. Continue in 2x2 rib until band measures 1 inch.
    5. Bind off all stitches in rib.

    Left:

    1. With right side facing, pick up and knit 108 (116, 116, 124, 132, 140) stitches down the Left Front edge, beginning at the neck edge and ending at the leg cast on.
    2. Work in 2x2 rib for half an inch, ending with a wrong side row.
    3. Buttonholes: Rib 63 (68, 68, 73, 78, 83), K/P2tog (depending on part of rib), yo, rib 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 15), K/P2tog, yo, rib 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 15), K/P2tog, yo, rib 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 15), K/P2tog, yo, rib to end. You have made 4 buttonholes.
    4. Continue in 2x2 rib until band measures 1 inch.
    5. Bind off all stitches in rib.

    Inside Leg:

    1. With right side facing, pick up and knit 96 (104, 108, 112, 116, 120) stitches up the Right Front edge, beginning at the leg cast on, going across the leg join, and going down the Left Front to the leg cast on.
    2. Work in 2x2 rib for 1 inch, ending with a wrong side row.
    3. Bind off all stitches in rib.

    Neckline:

    1. With right side facing, pick up and knit 72 (76, 76, 80, 84, 88) stitches for neckband across Right Front button band, Right Front, Back, Left Front, and Left Front button band.
    2. Work in 2x2 rib for 1 row.
    3. Rib 3, yo, K/P2tog, work in 2x2 rib to end.
    4. Work in 2x2 rib for three-quarters of an inch, ending with a wrong side row.
    5. Bind off all stitches in rib.

    Finishing:

    Attach buttons opposite their corresponding buttonholes. Weave in ends and block to schematic measurements.
