We purchased a five-pack of BagPodz Reusable Shopping Bags so our writer could put them to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.
Single-use plastic bags are on the outs, being banned by more and more states. To be environmentally friendly and curb shopping waste, eco-conscious people are looking at reusable shopping bags that are handy to keep in a purse or the car for shopping errands. So many times, we have been asked at the checkout counter, “Do you have bags?” and it’s about time we say, “Yes.” The BagPodz Reusable Shopping Bags come in a pack of 5 or 10 held in a “pod” for easy access. We went to our local Trader Joe’s to pick up our groceries for the week and tested them out. Read on to see how they held up.
Design: Their compact “pod” features a clip for your shopping cart
It's obvious that the designers of the BagPodz Reusable Shopping Bags had the Earth in mind. The rip-stop Bluesign-certified material is eco-friendly and sustainably produced. Bluesign is an independent, Switzerland-based auditing company that examines manufacturing mills to measure ecological impact and their engineering processes’ toxicity.
We tested the pack of 5 (there is also a 10-pack). All of the bags come inside a “pod,” which has a separate zipper and drawstring opening for easy access to the bags. The pod also features a clip so you can attach it to your cart when shopping. We loved this feature because our bags were readily available (literally right at our fingertips) when we needed them at checkout.
The one thing we were missing was bag handles that were long enough to fit over our shoulders.
The one thing we were missing was bag handles that were long enough to fit over our shoulders. The handles are only large enough to hold the bags with your hand or rest on your lower arm. Since my family of three lives in Brooklyn, New York, we walk to and from our home and grocery store. Having the ability to carry the bags slung over a shoulder would be a bit more comfortable than carrying four or five bags in hand all the way home.
Packability: Easily held a week’s worth of groceries
We were intrigued to see how much food would fit in these bags. Each bag measures 12.5 inches by 12.5 inches by 4.5 inches.
We attached the pod to the shopping cart’s handle and loaded up on produce, canned goods, pasta, cereal, frozen items, eggs, milk, and snacks. Our cart was pretty full, and at checkout, we could pack everything in 4 out of 5 bags. After we unpacked our groceries at home, it was easy enough to put the bags back in the pod’s drawstring opening for the next shopping trip next week.
We feel pretty confident that the 5-pack will always be good enough for what we need, but if you have a larger family, the 10-pack may be better for you, especially if you like to make one big shopping trip at a time.
Durability: Each bag holds up to 50 pounds
At first glance, the BagPodz Reusable Shopping Bags seem pretty delicate, but we were surprised to learn that each bag holds up to 50 pounds. Our bags were pretty heavy after our grocery shopping trip, and they held up great.
Another great feature is that the bags are water repellent and can contain any spills if something opens in your bag during transport. Some of the produce got one of the bags wet, and we simply wiped it dry.
Cleaning: Water repellent and machine washable
These bags are super easy to clean and are machine washable if needed. Thanks to the water repellent material, you can wipe away spills or place it in the washing machine (we used cold water on delicate). Then, hang dry the bag. After a round in the washing machine, these bags came out fine.
Price: Pricier compared to other reusable bags, but worth the spend
Looking at other reusable shopping bags, most fall in the price range of $15 to $25. So at $24.95 for a 5-pack, the BagPodz are on the higher end, but well worth it. The bags are super durable, easy to store when not in use, and most importantly, replace plastic and paper bags.
BagPodz Reusable Shopping Bags vs. BeeGreen Basic Reusable Grocery Bags
We also tested the BeeGreen Basic Reusable Grocery Bags during an afternoon of running errands. The BeeGreen version also comes with five bags, has a carrying pouch, can hold up to the same weight, and are machine washable. However, BeeGreen’s are around $10 cheaper and easy to hang on your shoulder, which the BagPodz can’t. We also needed fewer bags for the same amount of groceries.
Both brands do make stellar bags. I appreciate the type of “pod” the BagPodz bags come in and the hook for your grocery cart, however, that didn’t outweigh BeeGreen’s lower cost and ability to hold on your shoulder–which was super helpful for me when running errands around the neighborhood.
