These baked tortilla chips sweetened with sugar and a touch of cinnamon are a sweet treat that kids and adults alike will love. If you're looking for an easy vegan snack ideas these sweet little treats take just a few minutes to prepare and pack up well wrapped in foil. Cinnamon tortilla chips are a great after-school snack for the kids along with a fresh fruit salsa, or, serve them up at a Cinco de Mayo party.

One of the great beauties of this simple snack is that it is fully vegan, assuming you use a vegan margarine such as Earth Balance, but of course, you can also use butter if that's what you have on hand or prefer. But in recipes such as this one, I think you'll find that the taste of the vegan margarine is actually preferable to butter, believe it or not. (Hint: Wondering if butter is vegan? Whether you prefer them baked or fried, and whether you call them "chips" or "crisps", if you've got some flour tortillas and a bit of cinnamon and sugar on hand, you're in for a sweet Mexican-inspired treat! The inspiration for these originally comes from a traditional Mexican fried dough snack popular in much of Latin America (and not just Mexico) called "bunuelos" which are absolutely not made from flour tortillas, but do have a similar savory and cinnamon-sugar taste. 

Eating on the go? Stick your flour tortillas in the microwave and fold them in half or layer them like a quesadilla, or, roll them right up (just watch out for dripping butter or margarine if you do! Enjoy!

What You'll Need

  • 4 flour tortillas
  • 2 tbsp. vegan margarine, melted
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. sugar

How to Make It

  1. First, slice the flour tortillas like a pizza into 6 slices to create "chips".
  2. Drizzle each "chip" with melted margarine and then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
  3. Bake at 350 F for about ten minutes, or until desired crispiness is reached.
  4. Serve with fresh fruit salsa or just snack on them as is! 

Recipe tips and variations: 

  • If you're not eating vegan, try a little honey butter and cinnamon instead of regular butter. Omit the extra sugar in this case, as the honey butter is sweet enough on it's own. 
  • Here's how to fry these chips instead of baking: Omit the vegan margarine and fry the flour tortillas in oil until crispy (about 2 minutes), then quickly coat with cinnamon and sugar. You can place the cinnamon and sugar in a bowl or in a bag and then just gently toss to coat evenly and well. 
  • Another recipe Variation: Instead of slicing into chip-sized pieces, slice your flour tortillas into strips about 1-inch wide.
