This freestyle apple pie is formed on a baking sheet. Barb tells us this is a family favorite - it hasn't failed her yet!

This is an easy alternative to a more structured pie baked in a pie plate, and the rustic look is really very attractive.

What You'll Need

  • Crumb Topping:
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/3 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
  • Filling:
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1 T. cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 4 C. sliced and peeled apples (Granny Smith are always good)
  • 1 T. lemon juice
  • 1 refrigerated prepared pie crust for 9" pie (or your own!)

How to Make It

Prepare this crumb topping and set aside: In a small bowl combine 1/2 C. flour and 1/3 C. packed brown sugar. With a pastry blender, cut in 1/3 C. margarine just until coarse crumbs form. If desired, add 1/2 cup coarsely chopped nuts at the end. Set aside.

In large bowl combine the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon. Add apples and lemon juice; toss to coat.

Unfold crust and place it on a foil-lined (or greased) cookie sheet.

Spoon the apples into center of crust, leaving a 2inch edge. Sprinkle crumb topping over apples. Fold up the edge of the crust, pinching at 2" intervals.

Bake in a preheated 400° F oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350° F and bake for about 35 minutes. longer or until apples are tender.

Makes 6 servings.
