This freestyle apple pie is formed on a baking sheet. Barb tells us this is a family favorite - it hasn't failed her yet!

This is an easy alternative to a more structured pie baked in a pie plate, and the rustic look is really very attractive. And a crumb topping means you don't have to prepare a top crust.

What You'll Need

  • For the Crumb Topping:
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/3 cup margarine
  • Optional: 1/2 cup nuts (chopped)
  • For the Filling:
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 4 cups apples (sliced and peeled; Granny Smith are always good)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 pie crust (refrigerated prepared crust for 9" pie; or your own!)

How to Make It

  1. Prepare this crumb topping and set aside: In a small bowl combine 1/2 cup of flour and 1/3 cup of packed brown sugar. With a pastry blender, cut in 1/3 cup of margarine just until coarse crumbs form. If desired, add 1/2 cup coarsely chopped nuts at the end. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl combine the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, cornstarch, and cinnamon. Add apples and lemon juice; toss to coat.
  3. Unfold crust and place it on a foil-lined (or greased) cookie sheet. Spoon the apples into center of crust, leaving a 2-inch edge. Sprinkle crumb topping over apples. Fold up the edge of the crust, pinching at 2-inch intervals.
  1. Bake in a preheated 400 F oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 F and bake for about 35 minutes longer or until apples are tender.
