It’s hard to believe that we’re already inching into the final months of this year, but beloved paint brand Benjamin Moore is eagerly looking ahead to lighter, brighter days. In anticipation of all that the coming year has to promise, the paint brand has announced a soft sage tone called October Mist as its pick for the Color of the Year 2022. Alongside other recently announced Colors of the Year (namely, the picks from Sherwin-Williams, PPG, and Behr), this makes it official: 2022 will absolutely be the year of any and all shades of green.

Describing this particular tone as “a gently shaded sage,” the brand revealed that it selected October Mist as the anchoring shade in its larger Color Trends 2022 palette. Similar to the green stem of a flower, October Mist is meant to encourage inspiration to grow, flourish, and blossom.

Alongside a range of hues from refreshed primaries to luminous pales and botanical hues, according to a press release announcing the launch, the Benjamin Moore team hopes that the Color Trends 2022 palette will “invigorate the senses and give root to personal style. The palette is harmonious yet diverse, reliable yet whimsical and meditative yet eclectic,” all things the paint brand's experts expects of 2022.

While the tone works well indoors and out, Benjamin Moore's team of color experts is encouraging everyone to look inward—and into the evolution of their personal spaces.

“As the spaces in our homes continue to evolve, we uncover more opportunities to express our individuality and leverage the power of color to design environments that serve different functions and styles,” says Andrea Magno, Benjamin Moore’s director of color marketing and development. “October Mist 1495 and the corresponding Color Trends 2022 palette reflects an effortless harmony of colors while inspiring unique combinations for any paint project.”

In past years, the brand has looked toward external trendsetters in a broad, cultural sense when deciding on their final palette picks. But this year, they took a slightly different approach. When it came time to decide on their official selections for color predictions for 2022, the team at Benjamin Moore looked inward. “Drawing from everyday observations, hobbies, personal rituals, and cultural influences, the Color Trends 2022 palette features fourteen Benjamin Moore colors that encourage experimentation and make room for any design style,” says the brand team.

October Mist—announced, fittingly, in the month of October—follows Aegean Teal and First Light (the top picks in 2021 and 2020, respectively) as the latest Benjamin Moore Color of the Year. Like Aegean Teal (a soft blue-green) and First Light (a rosy pink), October Mist is a softer, soothing tone that practically serves as a neutral—good news for anyone hoping to use it in their home ASAP.
