Best Bath Sheets

The Spruce / Lecia Landis

Upgrading your bathroom doesn’t have to require a full remodel or a fresh coat of paint; it can be as simple as buying new bath towels. Wrapping yourself up in an extra-large, high-quality towel after a hot shower or long bath feels like the ultimate in self-care, but finding a bath sheet that feels luxurious, is highly absorbent, and fits your desired price point isn’t always straightforward. There are endless features, fabrics, and sizes to consider.

To help you find the best bath sheet for you, we gathered the top bath sheets on the market and put them through their paces in The Lab and our homes, evaluating them by their quality, absorbency, texture, durability, dry time, and overall value. During our standard and long-term testing, we also paid special consideration to the towels’ size, ease of care, material, and real-world performance.

What We Don't Like
  • Takes 24 hours to dry fully

Upgrade your towel game with a set of Brooklinen Classic Bath Sheets. These towels are made of premium long-staple Turkish cotton, ensuring that they’re incredibly soft and absorbent. Measuring a generous 40 by 65 inches, these oversized towels feel like you’re wrapping yourself in a large blanket when you step out of your shower or bath. These bath sheets come in a set of two and have a weight of 550 GSM (grams per square meter), providing a mid-weight option for your bathroom.

Keep in mind that the extra thickness of these fluffy, soft-to-the-touch towels can hold moisture longer, slowing drying. If you plan to use each bath sheet more than once per day, they may not fully dry before each use. However, if it’s plushness and absorbency you’re looking for, these sheets deliver.

Additionally, cleaning them is a breeze, as they're machine washable and can be dried with ease. Choose from a variety of classic colors or limited-edition hues to match your bathroom decor.

  • Good value considering price point

What We Don't Like

You don’t need to break the bank in order to have a spa-like experience after stepping out of the shower. With the Home Decorators Collection Egyptian Cotton Shadow Bath Sheet, you can wrap yourself in a high-quality, ultra-soft bath sheet for under $35. (In our experience, you can sometimes find it on sale for under $20 for even bigger savings.) During our lab tests, we loved the plush, thick texture of the bath sheet, which is made from luxurious Egyptian cotton. We also appreciated their oversized form, as the 34-by-70-inch product offers ample surface area to bundle yourself up in. And with a weight of 675 GSM, the bath sheet has a hefty construction that feels sturdy and well-made.

In our lab testing, we found that although the towel was highly absorbent, its heavier construction can hold onto water longer than some other towels. Because of its thickness, it took upwards of two hours to completely dry. In our real-world tests, we found that hanging the bath sheet overnight allowed it to dry with no odor. When testing for durability, we found that the towel withstood our abrasion test well—its texture was disturbed but not diminished. However, we did notice that both the foundation and mascara stains remained to some degree post-wash. When we tried this product in our homes over the course of the month, we found that the bath sheet held up exceptionally well over time with a reliably solid performance and no signs of wear.

What We Like
  • Lightweight and portable

  • Quickly-drying and less likely to get musty

  • Doesn't shed

  • Gets softer after washing

What We Don't Like
  • Might not be absorbent enough for all users

  • Line-drying recommended

Turkish towels (also called "Fouta") are extremely lightweight and thin, but they dry incredibly fast, which can be a huge perk in humid climates and poorly ventilated bathrooms. The Cacala Pestemal Turkish Bath Towel is impressively lightweight and particularly quick to dry. In our dry-time lab tests, we found that most of the towel was dry within 30 minutes, much faster than other options. This means that it's also less likely to develop musty odors.

We also noted that a thin towel like this one can take some getting used to—the flat weave isn't plush like a traditional terry cotton towel. When we sent it home with one member of our team, she found that it wasn't absorbent enough to dry her entire body and decided to primarily use it for her hair. Another member of the team has used her Cacala towel for years to dry both her body and hair, and she loves it to this day. So whether this towel will be absorbent enough for everyday use may depend on the individual. On the plus side, we love that the flat weave doesn't shed like fluffier towels often do.

If you prefer an extra-large bath sheet, this towel will have you covered with a total of 70 inches of length. Their oversized design also makes it the ideal size for a beach towel (and it's light enough to pack up and take with you). Unlike many towels, the more you wash this towel, the softer it gets. The only detail we don’t like is that the manufacturer recommends line-drying the towel after washing to preserve the tassels. But, if you don't mind a few tangled tassels, we've found that the towel itself is durable enough to tumble dry. All in all, the Cacala towel has plenty to offer, especially if you're looking for something that will dry quickly or you're shopping on a budget.

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive for one towel

Step out of the shower, and wrap yourself in luxury with the Coyuchi Cloud Loom Bath Sheet. The cotton fibers that make up this bath sheet are 100 percent organic, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, and Made Safe certified. Constructed with long-staple fibers (which tend to produce a softer, more durable material), the towel garnered a perfect absorbency score in our lab testing. When we took it home to test it over time, we found that it seemed to grow more absorbent after several washes.

Each sheet features a substantial weight of 685 GSM that makes them feel like you’re wrapping yourself in a bathrobe rather than a traditional towel. If you’re someone who prefers a fluffy bath sheet, you’ll find that Coyuchi’s are soft and thick to the touch, which makes them thicker and heavier. When we first began using the towel, we noted a silky texture that was slightly offputting, though that faded after we machine-washed and dried it. If you prefer to shop for organic home products, we think this one has impressive certifications to back it up. It's certainly pricey, but we think the construction makes it a worthwhile splurge if you have the budget for it.

Boll & Branch’s Plush Bath Sheet will instantly upgrade your bathroom—and your post-shower experience. While we haven't used the bath sheet size, we put the bath towel version to the test in our lab and at home, and were impressed with how luxurious and thick it feels. We gave it a perfect score for texture in our testing. This 700 GSM bath sheet is crafted from 100 percent long-staple organic cotton that’s GOTS and Fair Trade certified.

When we took it home for additional testing, we confirmed that it's velvety soft, extra-dense, and absorbent for everyday use. We also noted that it didn't become scratchy after washing, which bodes well for a towel you might use every day. Each Boll & Branch bath sheet measures 36 by 70 inches, making this a delightful choice to wrap yourself for warmth and quick drying. You can choose from six muted hues that are reminiscent of a high-end spa. However, these high-quality bath sheets are definitely higher in price.

Personalizing your bath sheets can be a practical feature for those who live in busy households and want to keep track of which towel belongs to whom. Or, it can also add a thoughtful touch if you’re planning on gifting a towel set to a loved one. Either way, you can do so with Lands' End Premium Supima Cotton Bath Sheet, which allows you to add a monogram, embroidery design, or both for just $8 each. Plus, we love that it’s available in 18 design-forward hues.

Made with 100 percent Supima cotton (which means it's produced in the U.S. with extra long-staple fibers for added strength and softness), we were impressed with the texture of this bath sheet, which felt plush, soft, and thick. Post-wash, we found that although the bath sheet remained fluffy, there was some slight shrinkage along the thick band, which compromised the evenness of its surface. When testing for durability, we were blown away by how well the bath sheet held up. After scratching the surface of the product, we found that the texture was barely altered, with very little fuzz or lint removed. We're confident that this towel can withstand everyday use without much change. Plus, makeup stains fully lifted from the material in our tests, despite the towel’s light color. And for under $50, we think this top-performing bath sheet is a steal.

Frontgate Egyptian Cotton Bath Towels

Egyptian Cotton Bath Towels

Frontgate

What We Like
  • Incredibly absorbent

  • Extra-long Aerocotton-spun yarns add softness

  • Luxurious details, like a decorative hem

What We Don't Like
  • Slower to dry

  • Somewhat bulky due to size

Egyptian cotton towels have a reputation for strength, absorbency, and softness. This particular kind of cotton is often manufactured using a deep pile formed by twisted yarn loops, which create an extra layer of absorbency, because the loops trap water inside the fabric. That’s what makes Frontgate’s Egyptian Cotton Bath Towel—which comes in a bath sheet option—so heavenly. The ample sheet is made from 100 percent combed Egyptian cotton, which is then woven into a plush oversize towel. The sheet has a 4-inch decorative hem on both ends, and it is available in seven muted colors.

The bath sheet has a substantial weight of 800 GSM and is extremely durable and absorbent. Just keep in mind that this heavy weight will likely make it dry more slowly than your average towel, so it'll need to be hung in a well-ventilated room to prevent mildew growth.

  • Convenient towel loop

  • Dries skin well

  • Pre-washed for added durability

What We Don’t Like
  • Not plush

  • Towel loops can come undone

Crafted in Portugal with 100 percent long-staple Egyptian cotton, the two-ply construction of Riley’s Spa Towel Collection makes these bath sheets durable and absorbent. We tested the bath towel version, rather than the bath sheet size, of this pick. So if you're searching for an oversized towel, we recommend sizing up to the bath sheet to make sure you're comfortable and can easily wrap it around yourself. The weave is slightly nubby with a medium pile,  but that doesn’t make it harsh; instead, this bath sheet feels soft enough to be in a fancy hotel. The 700 GSM towels dry quickly and never feel soggy after use. They also include a handy “locker loop” for easy hanging.

These towels feature a hand-crafted binding along the edge, offering an elegant design detail. However, the towel loop, which is sewn into that binding, can come loose and need to be reattached. It’s a minor drawback, but one that can prevent easy hanging. While Riley’s bath sheet isn’t the best choice if you want plushness first and foremost, we like the wide range of color choices, the unique texture, and the quick-drying nature of these solidly weighted sheets.

Cozy Earth Plush Bath Sheets

Cozy Earth Plush Bath Sheets

Cozy Earth

What We Like
  • Highly absorbent

  • Durable, pill-resistant weave

  • 100-night trial

  • Ten-year warranty

What We Don’t Like
  • Can develop loose threads or snags

Wrap yourself in one of Cozy Earth’s Premium Plush Bath Sheets, and you’ll feel like you’re elevating your shower or bath experience. These high-quality bath towels are super soft and highly absorbent, but they aren’t like your typical bath sheet; instead, they’re made with a blend of cotton and viscose from bamboo, a fabric made from wood pulp from trees. That makes these an eco-friendly option–and it also makes for one seriously soft towel. You can choose any shade that suits your style or bathroom from six muted color options that range from creme to light gray and sand.

These oversized bath sheets come in a set of two, each with a weight of 800 GSM, giving you a heavyweight towel that can absorb quite a lot. Care is easy, and Cozy Earth offers a 100-night trial, so you can wash the bath sheets and try them out, and if you don’t like them, you get a full refund. While these towels can develop snags or loose threads, they’re pretty hardy, and minor imperfections don’t take away from their impressive softness.

Best Waffle

Ettitude Waffle Towel

Ettitude Waffle Towel

Ettitude

What We Like
  • Made from 100 percent bamboo fiber

  • Moisture-wicking weave

  • Ettitude is a certified B Corp

What We Don’t Like
  • Thinner than a typical bath sheet

Ettitude’s Waffle Towels are made from luxuriously soft 100 percent bamboo fiber, making them uniquely textured. Why opt for waffle over the traditional fluffy fibers of a bath sheet? Ettitude’s alternative provides a highly moisture-wicking waffle-weave fabric that draws moisture into its base layer, making this particular bath sheet more absorbent than traditional towels. The breathable honeycomb design also gently exfoliates the skin.

These bath sheets come in a set of two, which makes them nicely priced. When you purchase a set, they come pre-washed and packaged in a reusable drawstring bag made from recycled water bottles. While they are thinner than many other bath sheets, we don’t think it’s enough of a disadvantage to make you skip these soft, extra-absorbent towels. We appreciate that Ettitude has been certified as a B Corp, which means the company has demonstrated to a third-party that it functions with social and environmental impact in mind.

How We Tested the Bath Sheets

In order to find the best bath sheets on the market, we've tested the top-rated options on the market and put them through their paces in The Lab and at home, evaluating them by their quality, absorbency, texture, durability, dry time, and overall value. We evaluated texture and quality by inspecting the sheet before and after following the care instructions, noting the size of the product, its fiber content, and general construction. We also took note of the softness and thickness; any special features (such as a hanging loop or added piping); and any snags, loose threads, or imperfections. We then tested the sheets’ absorbency by submerging each option in four ounces of water and measuring its weight afterward. To test the dry time, we hung each bath sheet on the drying rack and timed how long it took for the sheet to dry and get back to its original weight. When evaluating durability, we conducted a stain test by rubbing mascara and foundation on the bath sheet, letting both absorb. We then inspected those areas post-wash, noting whether or not the stains were visible. We also abraded and brushed each bath sheet with a scrub brush, noting any changes in texture. Finally, we assessed the bath sheets’ value by comparing their prices with their overall quality.

In addition to standard lab testing, we also long-term test each sheet in our homes for one month, checking in to see how they hold up in real-world situations. We analyze our lab and at-home testing insights, along with our supplemental research, to compile this list of the best bath sheets on the market.

What to Look for in Bath Sheets

Thickness and Absorbency

When shopping for bath sheets, you need to consider both thickness and absorbency. The two are closely related, as thicker towels tend to be more absorbent, but absorbency doesn’t always translate so clearly or obviously.

Fluffy towels may feel like the ultimate in luxury, and most of us probably prefer a thicker towel over a thinner one. However, heavier towels can be too much of a good thing. Thicker, heavier towels usually offer a higher level of absorbency than thinner, lighter ones, but they have one key drawback: They take longer to air dry, according to Andrew Ellis, founder and CEO of Steam Shower Store, and if you use them more than once a day, they may still be damp the next time you use them. The longer a bath sheet stays damp, the more opportunity there is for your towel to smell musty and even grow bacteria. Thinner towels, though, are still absorbent but dry more quickly.

You’ll want to weigh your preference for a towel’s thickness–as thin as a traditional Turkish towel like Cacala’s Turkish towels, for example, versus an extra-plush option like the Boll & Branch Plush Bath Sheet–with how absorbent you need the material to be.

Fabric

“The best bath sheets are made out of natural fibers,” says Ellis. Cotton is the most popular and widely used material for towels. There are multiple types of cotton to choose from. Egyptian cotton, which is used in products like Frontgate’s Egyptian Cotton Bath Sheets, is prized for its softness and absorbency due to its extra-long fibers. Egyptian cotton towels often feel soft and fluffy, though it can depend on the individual fibers and towel construction. Turkish cotton is often woven with long fibers and flat weave so that it's thin but extra durable. It also dries more quickly. Supima cotton is similar to Egyptian cotton, but it’s manufactured in the U.S.

Linen is woven from natural fibers, and it’s a more durable and lightweight option than cotton. “Linen bath sheets are also more durable than cotton and become softer with each wash,” says Ellis. Bamboo is another absorbent option, but it can take longer to dry than other materials. Towels made with rayon can absorb a bit more water than cotton, and they are often very soft.

Weight

Bath towels are measured in GSM, which stands for "grams per square meter." This is an industry standard for measuring the density or weight of a fabric. “Checking GSM is a handy way to estimate the quality of a bath sheet,” Ellis says. It’s calculated by measuring the weight of one square meter of any fabric in grams. The typical range for bath sheets and towels runs between 300 and 900 GSM, with the higher end of the range feeling softer and more absorbent. A 300 to 400 GSM towel is thinner and lighter and dries more quickly than a heavier towel. A 400 to 600 GSM towel is a medium-weight towel, and the majority of towels sit in this density. A 600 to 900 GSM towel is incredibly dense and absorbent, but it requires more time to dry after use.

Environmental Impact

We’re always looking for ways to minimize our carbon footprint, and that includes shopping sustainably and supporting eco-friendly companies. Making towels can be environmentally taxing; conventional cotton is incredibly absorbent and uses a lot of water during production. That’s why it’s important to look for certifications.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) means that it must meet ecological and social health criteria during processing and manufacturing. Fair Trade Certified means the production of a textile complies with strict social, environmental, and economic standards and is done through sustainable means. It also means the artisans making the goods are working in safe conditions. OEKO-TEX Made in Green certification, ensures that products are made under sustainable practices.

FAQ
  • Are bath sheets better than bath towels?

Bath sheets are generally more expensive than bath towels, but the quality is the same. The main difference is going to come down to size. Bath sheets typically measure 60 by 35 inches, and bath towels typically measure 54 by 30 inches. Bath sheets have a larger surface area for drying off, so they’re more absorbent than bath towels, and they also offer more coverage. Bath towels, on the other hand, are smaller and lighter and lend themselves to jobs like wrapping long hair after washing it. According to Ellis, “If storage is an issue, bath towels may be the more practical option.”

  • What is the most absorbent towel fabric?

Cotton and rayon are the most absorbent fabric. “Terry cotton is a specific weave of cotton that has multiple protruding loops on both sides and is as absorbent as a fiber can be,” says Ellis. It’s also gentle on the skin. Consider breathable fabrics like waffle weave or microfiber. Bamboo and Turkish cotton are super absorbent options as well.

  • How often should you wash bath sheets?

Experts don’t completely agree on how often you should wash your bath towels, but the general consensus is around every three uses. Avoid washing towels with sheets or clothing, and stay away from fabric softeners, since they can reduce absorbency.
