What to Look for in Bath Sheets

Bath sheets are basically oversized towels, but there’s no “standard” size for them. Most bath sheets fall somewhere between 35 and 40 inches wide and 60 to 70 inches long, and the best size for your needs depends on how you plan to use them. If you like a towel that you can wrap around yourself further, a longer bath sheet may be the way to go. On the other hand, taller individuals may prefer a wider bath sheet, which will offer more vertical coverage.

“Strong, high-quality cotton is the most important factor in towel shopping,” says Elks. Cotton is universally accepted as the best towel material thanks to its soft feel and superior absorbency, but there are several types of cotton you’ll likely encounter as you shop. Turkish and Egyptian cotton varieties have longer fibers, meaning the resulting yarns are more absorbent and durable, while organic cotton is grown without any pesticides, ensuring it’s free from any potentially harmful chemicals.

The purpose of a towel is to dry off your body when wet, so it’s key to find a bath sheet that’s sufficiently absorbent. Materials such as Turkish and Egyptian cotton offer better absorbency than regular cotton (though even regular cotton is far superior to a synthetic material such as polyester). The construction of a towel will also impact its absorbency—terry cloth is one of the most absorbent materials thanks to its many small loops, which provide more surface area to suck up water.

You’ll frequently see the weight of towels measured in GSM, which stands for grams per square meter. Most towels are between 300 and 800 GSM, with 500-600 being your “average” towel. Lightweight constructions, such as Turkish towels or waffle towels, have a lower GSM, while thick, plush towels are often heavier.

  • How big are bath sheets?

There’s no universally standard size for bath sheets, but they’re typically 35 to 40 inches wide and 60 to 70 inches long. However, some extra-large models can be up to 80 inches in length.

  • What’s the difference between a bath sheet and a bath towel?

“The main difference between a bath sheet and a bath towel is the size and preference of the user,” says Elks. “Brooklinen bath sheets are on the larger end of the spectrum at 40 x 65 inches, whereas our standard bath towels are 30 x 58 inches.”

  • How do you fold a bath sheet?

Because bath sheets are larger, they often take up more space when folded. To help keep your linen closet neat and tidy, it’s beneficial to fold bath sheets into a uniform size. The most popular way to do this is by folding the towel in half lengthwise. From here, fold the towel into thirds widthwise and then into thirds lengthwise again. This method will produce a neat, tidy square that’s easy to stack.
