Best Linen: West Elm Belgian Flax Linen Sheet Set
Linen, made from the fibers of the flax plant, is a great choice for hot sleepers. The fabric absorbs moisture better than cotton, keeping you cool and dry all night long. But not all linen sheets are created equal; some can be itchy and stiff. This West Elm offering is our pick for the best California king linen sheet set: it consists of 100% Belgian flax linen, offering a soft and breathable feel. The sheet set includes a fitted and a flat sheet (pillowcases sold separately) and comes in slate, white, platinum and natural colors—all of which have a vintage, French provincial look. While linen is a great choice for humid weather, it also keeps you warm in the winter by acting as a natural insulator.
Whether you’re looking to upgrade your old cotton sheets and splurge on a new set or you want to try a new fabric like flannel or linen, a well-made set of sheets is just what you need to take your California king to the next level.
Still can't decide on what you want? Our round-up of the best linen bedding can help you find what you're looking for.

Best High Thread Count: AQ Textiles’ Devon 4-Pc California King Sheet Set
If you’re confused by thread counts (so are we!), it basically refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads in every square inch of fabric. As you move up in thread count, the sheets get softer and more durable. While a super high thread count may not be for everyone (they’re not as crisp as mid-range counts), they’re often considered the ultimate in bed luxury. The AQ Textiles Devon California King Set has 900 threads per square inch and features one of the highest thread counts on our list. It comes in 14 different colors and is made from a mix of 60% combed cotton and 40% polyester. It fits mattresses up to 18" deep, or most standard-sized items. Each set includes two king pillowcases, a fitted and a top sheet.
Reviewers say the AQ Textiles sheets are soft, luxurious and don’t slip, even on silky smooth mattresses. If you’re looking for a high thread count at an affordable price, these sheets are a great choice.

Best Sateen: Mayfair Linen Bedding Collection 100% Egyptian Cotton Sheet Set
Sateen sheets have a silky, luxurious feel, but they’re typically heavier and warmer than a Percale weave. If you’re looking for a durable sateen sheet, we love the Mayfair Linen Bedding Collection Sateen Weave Sheets. These 100% Egyptian cotton sheets look like a million bucks but cost far less. They come in eight colors and fit mattresses up to 15” deep. Sateen sheets are more prone to slippage, so ensuring a perfect fit on your mattress is key to keeping them in place.
Reviewers say they’re breathable and don’t snag easily, both of which are important when picking a set of sateen sheets. They’re also resistant to wrinkles and have a slight sheen to them that makes them look more expensive than they actually are.

Best Flannel: Pinzon 160 Gram Pinstripe Flannel Sheet Set
While flannel sheets have become less popular over the years, they’re still a great choice for cold sleepers and anyone who needs a little extra warmth during the chilly months. If you think flannel sheets have to be itchy, think again. The Pinzon 160 Gram Pinstripe Flannel Sheet Set is our pick for your California king bed because they’re velvety and lush without feeling scratchy or harsh against sensitive skin. We love the pinstripe design that gives it a classic, upscale feel (it’s available in navy, gray and white versions). The 160-gram flannel is a great choice for those who want that cozy feeling of flannel without feeling overheated.
Pinzon owners say the sheets fit memory foam mattresses like a glove and rave about the soft, cloud-like feel. Switching your sheets to flannel for the winter is a great way to save on heating bills while staying warm and cozy every night.

Best Wrinkle-Free: Royal Hotel California-King Wrinkle-Free Sheets
Let’s be honest: Nobody has time to iron sheets, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for a messy bed. If you want your guest room (or your own bedroom) to look polished and pulled-together without a lot of effort, the Royal Hotel California-King Wrinkle-Free Sheets will save you a good deal of time and energy. These 650 thread-count, 70% cotton and 30% polyester sheets are specially formulated to resist wrinkles. They’re available in eight colors (we’re partial to the gray or white) and fit mattresses up to 18”. Like most sheet sets on our list, each one comes with two king-sized pillowcases along with a flat and a fitted sheet. These sheets are sateen weave, but they don’t feel overly silky or smooth.
Owners say they rarely wrinkle, even when they sit in a heap after they’ve been washed (it’s okay, we do it too). A set of wrinkle-free sheets is the easiest way to keep your bedroom looking clean with only a modicum of effort.

Since we spend so much of our lives in bed (one-third to be exact), we may as well do it right. The Wamsutta Dream Zone 1000-Thread-Count PimaCott Sheet Set is the ultimate in luxury — and though it comes at a higher price point than any of the other sheets on our list, it’s worth it if you’re looking for a product that will last a lifetime. These 1000 thread count sheets are made from 100% pima cotton, a type of cotton that uses extra-long, dense fibers for a softer feel and longer-lasting construction. The sheets are available in 15 muted, modern colors, including one striped white version we particularly like.

Products Tested by The Spruce
How We Tested
We bought a top-rated California King sheet set that our reviewer tested by sleeping on nightly for a week. We asked our tester to consider the most important features when using these sheets, from their material to their weave. We’ve outlined the key takeaways here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.
What to Look for in California King Sheets
Material When shopping for sheets, be sure to look at the material they’re made from. Cotton sheets are known to be breathable and easy to care for, while flannel sheets are warm and cozy in the winter. Polyester or microfiber sheets are often inexpensive but don’t last as long, and linen sheets are quite pricey but can be used for years if taken care of properly. The best choice depends on your priorities.
Weave Most sheets are made from woven fabric (with the exception being knitted jersey sheets), and the type of weave will affect how the sheets feel, as well as their longevity. A percale weave results in a stronger, more crisp fabric that’s easy to care for, while sateen weaves are a bit softer but more prone to pilling.
Depth As you shop for sheets for your California King bed, pay special attention to the depth of the pocket on the fitted sheet. Many large mattresses are deeper—sometimes 16 inches or more—and you’ll want to ensure your sheets have a pocket that will comfortably accommodate this depth. Otherwise, they may fit poorly and fall off the mattress.
Test Results: West Elm Belgian Flax Linen Sheet Set (Best Linen)
Soft and breathable
Lots of color options
Ability to add a monogram
Our tester loved the look and feel of these linen sheets, as well as the ability to add a custom monogram. “To the touch, the fabric is cool and only slightly textured, which I appreciated,” she noted. However, as with other linen sheet sets, these do wrinkle easily, according to our reviewer. She also thought they weren’t the most durable and therefore wouldn’t recommend them to a pet owner. “The light nature of these sheets made me worry that they would snag, and while I still haven’t experienced this after a month, some reviews confirm that theory,” she explained. The takeaway? “If you want to fully customize your linen sheets, don't have pets, and are looking for super soft and breathable linen sheets,” our tester said these are a perfect purchase.
