Best Furniture Store Credit Cards of 2021

Best Overall: Target RedCard

Target RedCard

Target RedCard

Why We Chose It: The Target RedCard is the best overall furniture store credit card because it earns 5 percent off all in-store and online purchases at Target while providing numerous other benefits to cardholders.

What We Like
  • 5 percent off all Target purchases

  • Free shipping on most items

  • Return window extended by 30 days

What We Don’t Like
  • Can only be used at Target

  • Most furniture is available only online

  • Discount doesn’t apply to all purchases

Target is a popular retailer and online store that began in 1902 as the Dayton Dry Goods Company. It is a public company that offers a variety of furniture, home goods, clothing, groceries, and other items at affordable prices. With almost 1,900 stores across the U.S, the company has stores in all 50 states and 75 percent of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of a Target.

In addition to earning an unlimited 5 percent discount on furniture and all of your purchases at Target, you'll also save 5 percent at in-store Starbucks kiosks, on specialty gift cards, and same-day delivery through Shipt. (Note that the 5 percent discount does not apply to purchases such as prescriptions or Target Optical eye exams.) Plus, when you pair your card with the Target App, you can save even more with special offers. With no annual fee, all of the savings are yours to keep.

Cardholders also receive free shipping on most items purchased at Target.com so there are no surprise charges when you check out. Target also provides an additional 30 days for returns and exchanges.

Like many furniture store credit cards, you cannot use the RedCard at other stores. Additionally, if you carry a balance on your Target RedCard, you'll pay a variable interest rate of 22.90 percent (as of January 2021).

Best for Do-It-Yourself Furniture: IKEA Visa Credit Card

IKEA

IKEA

Why We Chose It. IKEA is known for its affordable DIY furniture with unique names. The IKEA Visa credit card makes your furniture purchases more affordable with 5 percent rewards.

What We Like
  • 5 percent back in IKEA rewards for every purchase

  • Can be used anywhere

  • Bonus rewards on dining, grocery, and utilities

What We Don’t Like
  • Rewards automatically issued at $15

  • Certificates expire within 45 days of issue

  • Rewards can only be used at IKEA

IKEA is known for its massive stores that feature furniture and home goods in real-life settings. Customers follow a winding path through its warehouse-sized stores where they can touch the furniture and get inspired by the interior decorator flair. IKEA furniture comes disassembled to keep costs low and to make it easier to transport home. After you buy your furniture, follow the directions to assemble it yourself at home or hire someone else to do it for you (like IKEA's partners Treamand or TaskRabbit).

Not only will you earn 5 percent rewards on IKEA furniture purchases, but cardholders also earn 5 percent rewards on Treamand installation and TaskRabbit assembly services. Plus, you'll earn 3 percent rewards on all dining, grocery, and utility purchases. All other charges earn 1 percent rewards. There is no annual fee and you're automatically enrolled in the IKEA Family loyalty program for additional rewards on furniture and home goods purchases.

In addition to rewards on your purchases, you'll receive $25 off your first IKEA furniture purchase of $25 or more. The credit is automatic when applying in-store and is received as a statement credit when applying online. You'll receive another $25 when you make at least $500 in qualifying purchases outside of IKEA, Treamand, or TaskRabbit within the first 90 days.

There's a lot to like with the IKEA Visa credit card, but the welcome bonus is only $50 if you meet both spending requirements. Additionally, all of the rewards that you earn can only be used at IKEA. The rewards are automatically issued whenever your balance exceeds $15 and are only valid for 45 days from the date of issue. This card offers a lot of value if you shop at IKEA on a regular basis, but the rewards are more limiting than true cash back cards.

Wayfair is an online-only retailer that was founded in 2002 by college roommates from Cornell University. The website started out by selling stereo racks and stands and has blossomed into the largest e-commerce destination for furniture and home furnishings. The company offers more than 18 million products across five distinct brands and generated over $18 billion in revenue for the 12 months ending September 2020.

No-interest financing can mean the difference between getting the furniture you love today and having to save up for it. Depending on your total purchase amount, you can receive no-interest financing ranging from six to 24 months.

The Wayfair Mastercard has no annual fee and gives new cardholders $40 off their first qualifying order of $250 or more. If you don't need zero percent financing, you can choose to earn 5 percent rewards on your Wayfair purchases instead. Also, you'll earn 3 percent rewards at grocery stores, 2 percent for online purchases, and 1 percent everywhere else. The rewards never expire and there's no minimum redemption amount.

The rewards earned by the Wayfair Mastercard can only be redeemed for future Wayfair purchases. Your Wayfair Rewards Dollars redemptions are limited to $2,500 per month and can only be used by applying them during checkout while paying with your Wayfair Mastercard.

Best for Long-Term Financing: Ashley Advantage From Synchrony

Ashley Advantage

Ashley Advantage

Why We Chose It. The Ashley Advantage credit card offers customers no-interest financing of up to 72 months on in-store purchases. If you're making a large purchase and need extra time or flexibility to pay off your new furniture, then this card is for you.

What We Like
  • No-interest financing up to 72 months

  • Financing can combine with discount offers

  • No minimum purchase required on a term of 6-12 months

What We Don’t Like
  • Can only use at Ashley HomeStore

  • Longer terms based on amount spent

  • Different terms for in-store vs. online charges

Ashley HomeStore sells a variety of furniture for all of your housing needs. It started in Chicago in 1945 and has grown into the world's largest manufacturer and retailer of furniture with over 800 stores.

Customers who use the Ashley Advantage credit card can benefit from no-interest financing terms ranging from 6 to 72 months. Note that the options vary based on the amount of your purchase and whether you are shopping in-store or online.

The Ashley Advantage credit card cannot be used at any other store and does not earn any rewards. It is simply a way to finance your purchase with a zero percent promotion. No-interest promotions of 18 months or less require smaller payments that may not pay off your balance in full before the promotion expires, so be sure to monitor the balance. Financing terms of 60 and 72 months require equal monthly payments over the course of your promotion. This ensures that your balance will be paid off in full, but offers less flexibility for people on a tight budget.

You'll earn 5 percent rewards at Amazon and Whole Foods with an eligible Amazon Prime membership. Whether you're ordering furniture or a book, you'll receive those rewards on every Amazon purchase. The card also earns 2 percent rewards at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, plus 1 percent on everything else.

New cardholders are instantly given a $70 Amazon gift card upon approval. The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, so you won't be charged extra when using the card while traveling internationally.

To avoid interest, you have to pay your balance off quickly because the grace period is 21 days, compared to 25 days for most other credit cards.

You'll receive either 5 percent off every purchase with this card or six months of special financing on qualified purchases.

The Lowe's Advantage Card offers 5 percent off every Lowe's purchase made online or in stores. If you need more time to pay, you can skip the 5 percent discount and instead opt for zero-percent financing for six months on purchases of $299 or more. Certain purchases may even qualify for seven-year financing with a reduced APR.

The card has no annual fee and offers exclusive cardholder events throughout the year. Additionally, new cardholders can get 20 percent off their purchase (maximum of $100 discount).

Cardholders do not earn rewards for their purchases. Plus, the Lowe's Advantage Card cannot be used at other stores.

Final Verdict

Many furniture stores offer their own credit cards to assist customers with their purchases. These cards usually offer some additional incentive that makes them a better choice than paying with cash, by check, or another credit card. Perks can include discounts, rewards, free shipping, and special financing promotions, to name a few.

We chose the Target RedCard as the best furniture store credit card because it offers the best combination of discounts and benefits on your purchases of furniture and other household goods and has numerous stores around the U.S.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Furniture Store Credit Card?

A furniture store credit card is a card that offers specific benefits when shopping at that store. These benefits may include discounts on purchases, exclusive offers, and extra benefits such as free shipping or an extended return window.

Can I Use a Furniture Store Credit Card for Other Purchases?

It depends on which furniture store credit card you're applying for. More retailers are realizing that it makes sense to open up their credit cards for other purchases because the company earns a little bit of money every time you make a purchase, regardless of where it occurs.

When comparing furniture store credit cards, pay attention to restrictions on where you can use the card and where rewards can be used. Some cards allow you to use the card everywhere, but the rewards can only be used at their store (e.g. IKEA Visa).

Should I Pay an Annual Fee for a Furniture Store Card?

Most furniture store credit cards do not charge an annual fee. These companies want to encourage you to spend money at their store and an annual fee is one more reason to say no.

How We Chose the Best Furniture Store Credit Cards

To pick the best furniture store credit cards, we compared financing options from traditional furniture stores and other retailers that also sell furniture in-store and online. Our goal was to find the right combination of fees, rewards, and benefits that fit the way people want to shop.
