Since many hall trees are versatile by design, selecting a "best overall" proved harder than you might think. Ultimately, the top spot goes to this piece for its polished yet practical shape, variety of storage options—including hooks, lower cabinets, and upper bins—and for the extra thoughtful details. The piece features side hooks, and a bordered top shelf that will keep items from slipping off. We were also pleased with the 250-pound weight limit, so rest assured it’ll accommodate everything from heavy, textbook-filled backpacks to awkward boot-tying poses with ease. 

One thing worth noting is that it's made of an engineered wood product. While this likely keeps the price reasonable (it’s solidly in the middle tier of pieces we considered), it may be less expensive of a material than you're originally expecting. The only real downside we found to this piece, though, is that the lower storage option is designed to be cabinets, so households with kids might want to be mindful of their practicality (and of potential pinched pinkies). Although, adept DIYers could opt to leave the hinges off for open shelving, if so inclined. Either way, we think it’s a great all-around option that will serve households with varying needs.

With nine coat hooks, two low shelves, plus a storage bench, this low-frills wood and metal tree rivals some of the more expensive options, despite its smaller price tag. We like how the open shelves double as shoe racks, while still giving you the option to use bins or baskets for smaller items. It's also worth noting that a similar, albeit larger, model from the same brand was also tested by one of our writers, who loved the tiered shoe shelving and additional storage her piece provides.

While the bench itself has a weight limit of roughly 198 pounds, limiting the use that adults can get, it’s still a versatile height to help younger users stay steady while zipping up jackets and pulling on shoes. We were also glad to see adjustable feet for positioning, along with included straps for anchoring it to the wall. The two-tone industrial design may be a bit limiting, but if it suits your space, we think this has the potential to be a great, budget-friendly choice for busy households.

The Benchwright set from Pottery Barn is gorgeous in design, and since it’s sold piece by piece, you can customize it to suit your needs. We picked this particular 4-piece combination as our pick for "best splurge" since it features bench storage, matching towers with both open shelves and cupboards, plus a connecting bridge with additional cubbies and sturdy hooks. The sizable upper cubbies are great for decorative items or storage you won’t need to reach on a daily basis, while the adjustable tower shelves also allow for flexibility. The open area framed by the piece also means you have plenty of room for bags or coats, or a defined space for a mirror or artwork. You can even add a cushion and pillows to fashion a reading nook. 

As stunning as this set is, however, it may overpower some rooms with both its size and shape. Although, if your budget and space allow, we think you’d be hard-pressed to find as elegant and practical a set, nor one that will likely last you for years to come.

What distinguishes the Nolan line apart from others is the sleek and sophisticated design that effortlessly provides functional storage and a stunning display. The single hall tree can be displayed and used entirely on its own, or combined with other pieces for a larger, wall-unit style hall tree system (much like the Pottery Barn combination we featured as our "best splurge" pick). While selecting multiple pieces can add up in cost, we felt like the contemporary style was so striking in its design that it warranted recognition on its own, too. Not only that, but useful elements like three metal hooks for coats, bags, and backpacks galore will be enjoyed and appreciated.

Also worth noting is that metal feet raise the piece above your floor a few inches—just high enough that shoes or toys could slip underneath, so plan accordingly. And, like many of the pieces collected, securing it to the wall is highly recommended. Luckily, anti-tip hardware comes with the piece.

Best for Small Spaces

In our research, we found that many smaller and slimmer hall trees include lower shelves or racks, but few offer designated shoe cubbies. On the same note, seats were less common on slimmer trees, too. So, when we found this piece, with space for nine adult pairs of shoes, and a bench with a 200-pound weight limit, we felt that it was deserving of "best for small spaces." You and your guests can sit down, remove shoes, and stash them out of the way in one fell swoop. Thanks to the three double hooks, coats and purses can be hung, as well. 

Since this is a slimmer piece, note that the actual room for sitting on the bench is limited by the side rails; these will be a benefit for households with squirmy kids, or where bags and totes tend to be piled together, but they may make an adult with a winter jacket feel cramped. We recommend removing those puffy coats before you sit. The top shelf is also less deep than the lower bench and cubbies, limiting what can be stored and displayed up above. On the other hand, it helps the seat feel more open, which could be a benefit for those who use the bench. If you have limited space in your entryway, we think it'll check many helpful boxes for you.

We also think the four color choices would make it easy to match different design styles. Whether you lean farmhouse chic or more contemporary, you can match it to your decor. 

That said, if you’re not looking to store dozens of shoes, then the shape of the lower cubbies may be limiting for you. The other potential downside we saw is the top shelf height of 77 inches; it may be too high to comfortably reach on a regular basis (however, this may be a perk if you need to store things out of reach of young kids). But if neither of these traits are dealbreakers for you, this could be a great fit for big, busy households, especially if you're looking to keep your entryway organized.

Enter this wood and metal choice from Pottery Barn which, for a few reasons, is a great match for homes with lots of bags and backpacks. First, we appreciate that there were no enclosed edges, so large and full bags won’t be squished. Secondly, you can select the placement of the nine hooks based on your needs. In other words, if you’re inclined to space them according to bag sizes or line up hooks for coat-and-backpack pairings, you can easily do so. And lastly, the slim metal frame is more compact than bulkier wooden styles, saving you precious inches and giving those bags more space. 

The storage rack under the bench is also one open shelf, which we like for larger bags, or for bins if you choose. You’ll see that many hall trees offer tiered shelves near the floor, so in the case of this piece, having an open compartment adds to its versatility. You can even store backpacks down there if the mood strikes (or if you or your household's members don’t like to reach for the hooks).
