Best Hall Trees

The Spruce / Sabrina Jiang

The adage, “a place for everything and everything in its place,” feels extra true if you’re considering a hall tree. These multitasking wonders are part furniture, part storage, part decor. If you’re looking to revamp your entryway or another high-traffic area of your home, you may want to give them some serious attention. Whether you have a bustling household with a steady flow of backpacks, sports uniforms, and dance shoes, or a quieter home with a collection of shoes and coats that need organizing, or something in between, the right hall tree can give you a reprieve.

“It’s so much more than aesthetic,” says Holly Blakey, professional organizer and founder of Breathing Room Organization + Styling. “The entryway or mudroom is so essential to the functioning of a family.” As tempting as it can be to buy a striking hall tree that brings instant polish to a space, her expert advice is to spend a moment to not only consider how you’ll be using this piece, but to also “take into account who your family members are, and your lifestyle.” One household’s perfect solution is another household’s disaster zone, so really ask yourself questions about whether you need a bench for tying shoes, a space for hanging coats, a wall of shoe cubbies, or something else completely. “Sometimes a hook to hang a jacket makes more sense than a locker with a door, or than a basket with a lid," Blakey notes.

Here are the best hall trees to tidy up and elevate your entryway.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall

Kathy Ireland Home by Bush Furniture Woodland 40W Hall Tree and Shoe Bench with Doors

4.8
Kathy Ireland Home by Bush Furniture Woodland 39.72'' Wide Hall Tree with Bench and Shoe Storage

What We Like
  • Classic design

  • 250-pound weight limit

  • Side hooks

What We Don't Like
  • No open storage at lower level

Since many hall trees are versatile by design, selecting a "best overall" proved harder than you might think. Ultimately, the top spot goes to this piece for its polished yet practical shape, variety of storage options—including hooks, lower cabinets, and upper bins—and for the extra thoughtful details. The piece features side hooks, and a bordered top shelf that will keep items from slipping off. We were also pleased with the 250-pound weight limit, so rest assured it’ll accommodate everything from heavy, textbook-filled backpacks to awkward boot-tying poses with ease.

One thing worth noting is that it's made of an engineered wood product. While this likely keeps the price reasonable (it’s solidly in the middle tier of pieces we considered), it may be less expensive of a material than you're originally expecting. The only real downside we found to this piece, though, is that the lower storage option is designed to be cabinets, so households with kids might want to be mindful of their practicality (and of potential pinched pinkies). Although, adept DIYers could opt to leave the hinges off for open shelving, if so inclined. Either way, we think it’s a great all-around option that will serve households with varying needs.

Best Budget

VASAGLE Coat Rack, Hall Tree with Shoe Bench

VASAGLE Coat Rack, Hall Tree with Shoe Bench

Courtesy of Amazon

What We Like
  • Front clothes rack

  • Bench railing

  • Adjustable feet

What We Don't Like
  • Bench weight capacity is low

  • Industrial design not as versatile

With nine coat hooks, two low shelves, plus a storage bench, this low-frills wood and metal tree rivals some of the more expensive options, despite its smaller price tag. We like how the open shelves double as shoe racks, while still giving you the option to use bins or baskets for smaller items. It's also worth noting that a similar, albeit larger, model from the same brand was also tested by one of our writers, who loved the tiered shoe shelving and additional storage her piece provides.

While the bench itself has a weight limit of roughly 198 pounds, limiting the use that adults can get, it’s still a versatile height to help younger users stay steady while zipping up jackets and pulling on shoes. We were also glad to see adjustable feet for positioning, along with included straps for anchoring it to the wall. The two-tone industrial design may be a bit limiting, but if it suits your space, we think this has the potential to be a great, budget-friendly choice for busy households.

Best Splurge

Pottery Barn Benchwright 4-Piece Entryway Set with Storage Bench

Courtesy of Pottery Barn

What We Like
  • Customizable design

  • Assembly included

  • Anti-tip kit included

What We Don't Like
  • No open storage at low levels

  • Bulky design may be too large for some

The Benchwright set from Pottery Barn is gorgeous in design, and since it’s sold piece by piece, you can customize it to suit your needs. We picked this particular 4-piece combination as our pick for "best splurge" since it features bench storage, matching towers with both open shelves and cupboards, plus a connecting bridge with additional cubbies and sturdy hooks. The sizable upper cubbies are great for decorative items or storage you won’t need to reach on a daily basis, while the adjustable tower shelves also allow for flexibility. The open area framed by the piece also means you have plenty of room for bags or coats, or a defined space for a mirror or artwork. You can even add a cushion and pillows to fashion a reading nook.

As stunning as this set is, however, it may overpower some rooms with both its size and shape. Although, if your budget and space allow, we think you’d be hard-pressed to find as elegant and practical a set, nor one that will likely last you for years to come.

Best Design

West Elm Nolan Entryway Hall Tree

West Elm Nolan Entryway Hall Tree

Courtesy of West Elm

What We Like
  • Contemporary design

  • Customizable set

  • Anti-tip hardware included

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

  • Items can slip underneath

What distinguishes the Nolan line apart from others is the sleek and sophisticated design that effortlessly provides functional storage and a stunning display. The single hall tree can be displayed and used entirely on its own, or combined with other pieces for a larger, wall-unit style hall tree system (much like the Pottery Barn combination we featured as our "best splurge" pick). While selecting multiple pieces can add up in cost, we felt like the contemporary style was so striking in its design that it warranted recognition on its own, too. Not only that, but useful elements like three metal hooks for coats, bags, and backpacks galore will be enjoyed and appreciated.

Also worth noting is that metal feet raise the piece above your floor a few inches—just high enough that shoes or toys could slip underneath, so plan accordingly. And, like many of the pieces collected, securing it to the wall is highly recommended. Luckily, anti-tip hardware comes with the piece.

Best for Small Spaces

Prepac Narrow Hall Tree with 9 Shoe Cubbies

Prepac Narrow Hall Tree with 9 Shoe Cubbies

What We Like
  • Narrow design still includes shoe cubbies

  • Bench limit of 200 pounds

  • Fair price

What We Don't Like
  • No side storage

  • Shallow top shelf

  • Potentially cramped seat

In our research, we found that many smaller and slimmer hall trees include lower shelves or racks, but few offer designated shoe cubbies. On the same note, seats were less common on slimmer trees, too. So, when we found this piece, with space for nine adult pairs of shoes, and a bench with a 200-pound weight limit, we felt that it was deserving of "best for small spaces." You and your guests can sit down, remove shoes, and stash them out of the way in one fell swoop. Thanks to the three double hooks, coats and purses can be hung, as well.

Since this is a slimmer piece, note that the actual room for sitting on the bench is limited by the side rails; these will be a benefit for households with squirmy kids, or where bags and totes tend to be piled together, but they may make an adult with a winter jacket feel cramped. We recommend removing those puffy coats before you sit. The top shelf is also less deep than the lower bench and cubbies, limiting what can be stored and displayed up above. On the other hand, it helps the seat feel more open, which could be a benefit for those who use the bench. If you have limited space in your entryway, we think it'll check many helpful boxes for you.

Best for Large Family

Gracie Oaks Gracie 60'' Wide Hall Tree with Bench

What We Like
  • Multiple color choices

  • 24 shoe cubbies

  • Wide bench for seating and storage

What We Don't Like
  • Top shelf is high for some

  • No side storage

Finally, an answer to the last minute scramble of: “Where’s your other shoe?” This piece features 24 cubbies, each able to hold two adult shoes. You read that right–it was enough space for 48 individual shoes. Not only that, but the bench holds up to 200 pounds, for kids, backpacks, and shopping bags (even at the same time). Six double-hooks are positioned a comfortable distance from each other, too, so multiple family members can use them at the same time. We also think the four color choices would make it easy to match different design styles. Whether you lean farmhouse chic or more contemporary, you can match it to your decor.

That said, if you’re not looking to store dozens of shoes, then the shape of the lower cubbies may be limiting for you. The other potential downside we saw is the top shelf height of 77 inches; it may be too high to comfortably reach on a regular basis (however, this may be a perk if you need to store things out of reach of young kids). But if neither of these traits are dealbreakers for you, this could be a great fit for big, busy households, especially if you're looking to keep your entryway organized.

Best for Backpacks

Pottery Barn Andrew Hall Tree

What We Like
  • Customizable hook placement

  • Open sides

  • Storage rack under bench is very spacious

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

  • No compartment storage

When it comes to backpacks, we ultimately wanted a piece that allowed for roomy yet secure hanging. Enter this wood and metal choice from Pottery Barn which, for a few reasons, is a great match for homes with lots of bags and backpacks. First, we appreciate that there were no enclosed edges, so large and full bags won’t be squished. Secondly, you can select the placement of the nine hooks based on your needs. In other words, if you’re inclined to space them according to bag sizes or line up hooks for coat-and-backpack pairings, you can easily do so. And lastly, the slim metal frame is more compact than bulkier wooden styles, saving you precious inches and giving those bags more space.

The storage rack under the bench is also one open shelf, which we like for larger bags, or for bins if you choose. You’ll see that many hall trees offer tiered shelves near the floor, so in the case of this piece, having an open compartment adds to its versatility. You can even store backpacks down there if the mood strikes (or if you or your household's members don’t like to reach for the hooks).

Best with Mirror

Better Homes & Gardens Crossmill Hall Tree Storage Bench

Better Homes & Gardens Crossmill Hall Tree Storage Bench

Courtesy of Walmart

What We Like
  • Double hooks

  • Lower bin storage

  • Wider bench seat

What We Don't Like
  • Bins sold separately

  • Rustic design won't suit all spaces

If you want a functional piece that also allows you to check your hair before you leave your home, this stylishly weathered choice is it. Decorative mirrors are great multitaskers and can serve other purposes, like helping your space feel bigger and more open, too. We also love that the five double hooks of this tree are positioned under the mirror, so they won’t block the reflection at all. Heads up that the roomy bench may entice kids to step up to check the mirror, so be ready to manage an extra layer of safety around that.

The other area to plan for is the two lower cubbies. They’re designed to suit 15-inch bins, which are also sold by Better Homes & Gardens (Better Homes & Gardens is owned by The Spruce's parent company, Dotdash Meredith). It’s a less common size than popular 12-inch styles, so your options for coordinating are more limited. Of course, smaller sizes or different styles are always an option, too.

Best with Storage

Home Decorators Collection Royce 60 in. Polar White All-in-1 Hall Tree

Home Decorators Collection Royce 60 in. Polar White All-in-1 Hall Tree

Courtest of Home Depot

What We Like
  • Side cabinets

  • Foam seat included

  • Crown molding

What We Don't Like
  • Fewer hooks

  • Top shelf height

  • Tight seating area

The crown molding on this hall tree is the chef’s kiss on an overall elegant design. We were also taken by the side cabinets that extend for the entire height of the piece, giving you lots of versatile storage space, made easy by adjustable inner shelves. Speaking of height, at more than 81 inches, it’s one of the tallest pieces we feature on this list, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself in need of a step stool to reach the top shelf. The back is also a sophisticated touch, and it’s one of the few pieces we found that includes a matching bench cushion, so you don’t have to go hunting for the right shape or size. We also appreciate the always-handy shoe cubbies, with room for six pairs built right in.

If we could wave a wand and change anything about this piece, we might consider additional hanging hooks or a more spacious bench area, but these are minor changes. If you’re after a sturdy piece that blends form and function, this is it.

Final Verdict

With its attractive design, practical storage, and thoughtful details—like side hooks and a bench weight limit of 250 pounds (surpassing most others we found)—we love the Kathy Ireland Home by Bush Furniture Woodland Hall Tree and Shoe Bench with Doors. If you’re looking for something less pricey, the VASAGLE Coat Rack, Hall Tree with Shoe Bench checks many similar boxes for a smaller price point, and it’ll also take up less space in your home.

What to Look for in a Hall Tree

Size and Organization Options

Hall trees have one thing in common with each other: they create a landing space for that busy area of homes dubbed the “chaotic drop zone," by professional organizer and founder of Breathing Room Organization + Styling, Holly Blakey. However, beyond that important purpose, there’s almost as much variation in hall trees as in regular trees. What will help you select the best piece for your household will come down to how and where you’ll use your hall tree.

Take into account how much space you have for it, and how you’ll be using it. For example, will it be taking the place of a coat closet or complementing one? Do you need low-level storage options for smaller people to reach into? Will you be stashing infrequently used (but still necessary) seasonal items? Do you like open shelves, drawers, bins, or cupboards, or a combination of them all?

Blakey explains that “knowing your space well and knowing yourself well,” will really help ensure that you’re making the best choices to maximize your space, and your hall trees, in ways that work for you and your household.

Material and Color

“When you like the way something looks, you’re more motivated to keep it up,” Blakey explains. But that’s not to say you should only opt for an aesthetically-pleasing piece that matches your decor. Her advice is to “take into account what you need and how you can really make your space functional.” A gorgeous piece that merely gathers dust won't be as helpful as one that features the storage and organizational elements that will help you and your family thrive, no matter what color or shape it is.

Note that material not only is a design element, but also dictates how sturdy and durable your piece is, and how you might adjust it to suit your needs. Metal-framed hall trees, for example—like the VASAGLE Coat Rack, Hall Tree with Shoe Bench—often have wire shelves that allow for S-hooks to hang additional belongings, while wooden units aren’t always as flexible (unless you’re handy with a drill). These may feel like minor details, but they're worth considering as you search for the right piece.

Required Assembly

If your hall tree requires assembly and you’re savvy with a drill, then you’ll want to plan ahead for the time and tools involved. If you don’t consider yourself to be handy with tools, or you’re simply not comfortable for any reason, consider tapping a friend, family member, or professional for help. Note that some of the larger pieces can include delivery and assembly, as well.

If you’re not the party responsible for putting your new piece together, be ready to accommodate the delivery and installation process, which can still take time (even when it’s professionally handled).

FAQ
  • How big should a hall tree be?

The short answer is, as big enough to accommodate your needs, but not so big that it overwhelms your space. Most of the hall trees featured here range from roughly 20 to 60 inches wide, and from 60 to 80 inches tall. If you go much slimmer than that, you’ll find yourself in coat rack territory, while larger pieces start to moonlight as wall units.

To decide what works best for you, measure the designated area and then factor in the floor space around it, too. You don’t want to overwhelm a busy intersection of your home, or turn a busy walkway into a tripping hazard. Once you have a sense of how much space you can (safely) dedicate to your piece, start making that checklist of the necessary features you want it to have, and the right pieces will start to emerge as you search.

  • Where can you put a hall tree in your home?

You’ll find that most hall trees are designed for entryways, but the versatile designs can easily double as wardrobes, closet shelving, or other storage options, too. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but as you consider your options, don’t forget that in addition to form and function, safety is key to keep in mind, too. Ensure that you have plenty of wall space, and that you can comfortably secure the hall tree, too.

  • How can you style and decorate a hall tree?

The sky, or rather, the ceiling’s the limit in how you personalize your new hall tree. Upper shelves are often out of reach of children and even some adults, so decorative and seasonal items mainly for display can work well. On lower levels, bins and baskets make for easy, stylish, and functional additions. With many hall trees featuring shelves, you can style them as you would a favorite bookshelf or floating shelf.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Dena Ogden is a lifestyle and commerce writer who’s been writing professionally since 2016, and with The Spruce since August 2022. For this piece, she did thorough research on hall trees currently available at major retailers, and evaluated products based on size, features, material, design, and overall value. She also spoke with professional organizer Holly Blakey, founder of Breathing Room Organization + Styling, about hall trees and entryway organization, storage, and design.
