The Best Landscape Edging Products

The Spruce / Alli Waataja

Landscape edging is a great finishing touch for your garden beds, creating a clean line between the garden’s edge and the lawn. However, it can provide more than just a cosmetic benefit. It can also keep grass (or pesky weeds!) from spreading into your garden, and it can keep mulch and other landscaping materials in your garden from spilling out onto the grass.

We reached out to Jeff Reiland, owner of Abundant Design Landscaping in Des Moines, Iowa, for further insight on the pros and cons of each material, "Plastic rolled edging requires more maintenance in a year or so, but the plastic doesn’t have joints that can allow the grass to slip in. Steel pound-in edging can frost heave in cold climates, and it can also really do a number on mower blades. Six-inch wide planter stone works really well, and is my favorite."

To help you find the best edging for your garden and landscaping needs, we researched the top options and evaluated them based on material, ease of installation, effectiveness, durability, and price.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall

Grass Barrier Landscape Edging 10" Inch Depth

4.8
Grass Barrier Landscape Edging 10" inch Depth

Amazon

What We Like
  • Excellent grass and weed barrier at 10 inches deep

  • Few gaps to allow grass to grow through

  • Keeps mulch out of lawns

  • Made from 100 percent recycled plastic

What We Don’t Like
  • More difficult to install than some other products

  • Extra maintenance may be required

With a 10-inch depth, the Grass Barrier Landscape Edging is our top pick for most of your landscape edging needs. It can be sunk 6 inches into the ground to keep most turfgrass and weed roots from spreading into your garden beds, while still allowing a 4-inch lip above ground to keep mulch from escaping. We also appreciate that the Grass Barrier Landscape Edging is made from 100 percent recycled plastic and is manufactured in the USA. It's also built to last: The manufacturer says it can last more than 100 years and provide up to a 200 pound-force of puncture resistance.

This edging is more time-consuming to install than most of the other products on our list—you'll need to dig a small trench to get the desired depth you need. However, it’s also the product most likely to keep weeds at bay, since its depth keeps their roots from spreading. Keep in mind, if you would like to connect the ends of this 20-foot edging, you'll have to purchase a connector kit separately.

As with all plastic edging, it may require extra maintenance (readjusting if it comes out of the ground or moves out of place), as well as extra care when mowing around it, as a lawn mower could damage the plastic. Overall, we think this is a great product that creates an effective boundary and clean border for your garden beds.

EasyFlex Heavy-Duty No-Dig Landscape Edging

EasyFlex Heavy-Duty No-Dig Landscape Edging

Amazon

What We Like
  • Affordably priced

  • No digging required

  • Made from recycled plastic

  • Keeps mulch out of lawn

What We Don’t Like
  • Doesn’t provide grass and weed barrier

  • Not as long-lasting as other products and may require maintenance

If you’re looking for a quick, easy-to-install, inexpensive product that delineates your garden beds and keeps mulch from escaping into the lawn, EasyFlex Heavy-Duty No-Dig Landscape Edging is a great choice. Made of black recycled plastic, this edging is one of the most affordable options we found, as well as one of the easiest to install, with no digging required.

This versatile product comes in a variety of lengths and is available in commercial grade and standard varieties. You can also connect two strands if needed or cut it with garden shears to your desired length. To install, place the edging around your beds and use a rubber mallet to drive the rust-resistant spikes (included) into the tabs. Note that since this edging is no-dig, it doesn’t provide much of a barrier to prevent weeds and turf grasses from spreading into your garden beds. It might not last as long as products made from stone or metal and will require adjusting from time to time if the spikes move around.

Edge Right Hammer-in Landscape Edging

Edge Right Hammer-in Landscape Edging

Amazon

What We Like
  • Sturdy, weather resistant, and long lasting

  • Depth helps keep grass and weeds from spreading

  • Stylish and versatile

  • Develops a patina over time

What We Don’t Like
  • Expensive

  • More difficult to install some other options

Edge Right Hammer-in Landscape Edging is made of attractive 14-gauge Corten steel, which develops a stylish patina over time. Your weed eater shouldn’t harm this sturdy, weather-resistant, no-dig edging. Nor should most anything else: The manufacturer says the product should last more than 100 years!

This edging comes in 6-, 8-, and 14-inch depths (measured from the top of the spine to the point of the tooth), with teeth meant to be pounded several inches into the ground with a mallet. (Although it's listed as "no-dig," you will want to create a line in the dirt with a shovel to create the border you want.) Once installed, It attractively sets off your garden beds, keeping weeds and turfgrasses out and mulch in. The deeper the edging is sunk into the ground, the better it is at stopping the spread of turfgrasses and weeds. We also think it would look great around a fire pit area, separating rocks from the grass.

Although the manufacturer insists that the pieces’ squared tops avoid cutting bare feet, you can purchase an edge guard separately for high-traffic areas. No corner pieces are necessary; you can bend pieces to establish corners, whether sharply angular or more subtle shapes. If there’s more edging than you need, you can overlap the pieces and secure them with the included clips. If you need additional clips, you can purchase them separately. This edging is more expensive than other options, but it should last as long as you need it.

Best Stone

Nantucket Pavers Cobblestone Granite Gray Edger Kit

Nantucket Pavers Cobblestone Granite Gray Edger Kit

The Home Depot

What We Like
  • Natural, durable, long-lasting material

  • Keeps mulch out of lawn

  • Attractively sets off garden beds

  • The width and depth help keep grass and weeds out of garden beds

What We Don’t Like
  • More difficult to install than some other products

While costing more than other materials on this list, the Nantucket Pavers Cobblestone landscape, made from granite, is less expensive than many other natural stone edging materials. As with all stone edging, this option is sturdy, weather-resistant, impervious to your weed-eater, and likely can be around forever.

You can set this stone edging on top of the ground or sink it as deep as four inches. Keep in mind that the depth you choose to install this edging determines whether it’s better for weed control or mulch control. Either way, it can create a beautiful, natural border for your garden beds. You can also use these heavy-duty granite stones for walkways and even driveways.

Best Decorative

EasyFlex Decorative No-Dig Landscape Edging with Anchoring Spikes

EasyFlex Decorative No-Dig Landscape Edging with Anchoring Spikes

Lowes

What We Like
  • Whimsical scalloped edge

  • Made from recycled plastic

  • No digging

What We Don’t Like
  • Doesn’t provide grass and weed barrier

  • Not as long-lasting as other products and may require maintenance

EasyFlex Decorative No-Dig Landscape Edging is similar to our best budget pick in price and installation (no digging required) but stands out due to its unique design. The scalloped edge provides a fun, whimsical detail, and since it's an inch taller, it provides a little more of a border—compared to our best budget pick—for keeping mulch at contained.

This edging comes in a variety of lengths and colors to complement your landscape. To install, place the edging around your beds, and drive the included spikes into the tabs with a rubber mallet. Note that since it is plastic and doesn't require digging, it won't provide much of a barrier for weeds and turf grasses, and it likely won't last as long as products made from stone or metal. You also may need to readjust the spikes from time to time. However, we think this is a great affordable, easy-to-install option, especially if you want to add a special finishing touch to your borders.

Best Plastic

Gardener's Supply Company Pound-In Plastic Edging

Gardener's Pound-In Plastic Edging

Gardener's Supply Co.

What We Like
  • Keeps grass and weeds out of garden beds

  • Keeps mulch out of lawn

  • Versatile kit is available in three heights

  • Made from recycled plastic

What We Don’t Like
  • No corner pieces

  • Not as long-lasting as other products and may require maintenance

  • Need to pound each piece separately

We like this Pound-In-Plastic Edging from Gardeners Supply Company, because it is available in three heights, made of recycled plastic, and 6 inches wide per piece (20 feet in total), so you can customize the border you need. This 8-inch version should successfully contain most turfgrass and weed roots while setting off your garden beds and preventing mulch from escaping their borders.

If you moisten the ground first, each 6-inch-wide piece is relatively easy to pound into the ground with a rubber mallet. However, keep in mind that some soils are easier to work with than others, and it may require more work to get the taller edging options in place. Keep in mind when planning your border that the edging easily bends, but there are no corner pieces available.

Best for Mowing

Gardener's Supply Company Recycled Rubber Mulch Edging

Recycled Rubber Mulch Edging

Gardener's Supply Co.

What We Like
  • Can mow over it

  • Suppresses weeds while letting water through

  • Cushions knees when kneeling to do garden chores

  • Easy, roll-out installation

What We Don’t Like
  • May let weeds through over time

Just unroll this recycled rubber mulch edging down the edges of your garden beds for the fastest, easiest installation around. The edging should stay in place, but you can also easily insert a few landscaping staples for an extra-secure installation. Made from recycled rubber tires, this material serves as mulch at the edge of your garden beds, making them look tidy and suppressing weeds. You can mow right over it when needed.

We also like that anyone, including pets, can walk on the mulch edging. It also provides a little extra cushion for your knees when you’re doing garden chores. Keep in mind that the material is permeable, and although that is great for letting water into the soil, the fabric will weather over time and be less effective at keeping weeds from growing. Still, we recommend this product as a credible mulch alternative that’s easy to mow around.

Best Fence

Gardener's Supply Company Oxford Border Edging

Oxford Border Edging

Gardener's Supply Co.

What We Like
  • Creates a stylish border

  • Easy to install without tools

  • Made of powder-coated, weather-resistant steel

What We Don’t Like
  • Doesn’t provide mulch barrier or weed control

  • Set includes only three panels

The Oxford Border Edging is easy-to-install and can create a stylish border around your garden. At about 12 inches tall (once installed) and 15 inches wide, each of the three panels can be placed next to each other—although they don't connect—to create a low, 45-inch-long garden fence. This won't deter all animals and foot traffic, but it does provide more of a boundary than traditional edging. And since these panels are made of powder-coated steel, they should withstand the elements (although they could rust if scratched).

Keep in mind that the Oxford Border Edging won't keep weeds or grass from spreading into your garden, or mulch contained. However, we think that this is a beautiful no-dig option, especially for smaller spaces. Since this edging is sold in panels of three, it's a bit of a splurge for a larger area.

Material: Powder-coated steel | Dimensions: 15 x 15.75 inches each | Installation Type: No digging required

Final Verdict

Our top choice is Grass Barrier Landscape Edging, which keeps grass and weeds from spreading into your garden, while keeping mulch from spreading out. For a super-fast installation of edging you can mow right over, we like the Gardener's Supply Company's Recycled Rubber Mulch Edging. Plus, it is wide enough that it acts as a mulch barrier between your garden and grass.

What to Look for in Landscape Edging

Effectiveness

“To keep grass from spreading into garden beds, you want your landscape edging to be 3 to 4 inches deep, and the wider the better," says Jeff Reiland, owner of Abundant Design Landscaping in Des Moines, Iowa. However, sinking landscape edging 4 or more inches deep can be time-consuming and tiring. Landscape edging that is placed an inch or two below ground won't guarantee effectiveness, but it will slow roots from spreading and keep your garden looking tidier. To keep mulch and other landscape material from spreading out of your garden bed, make sure the landscape edging creates a solid barrier at least an inch or two above the ground.

Durability

Landscape edging can vary in durability. Edging constructed of high-quality materials, such as stone or Corten steel, is durable even in the harshest weather, can withstand abuse from lawnmowers and other garden tools, and can easily last a century or more. For example, the Nantucket Pavers Cobblestone Granite Gray Edger Kit is long-lasting and required little maintenance. For a great steel option, we like the Edge Right Hammer-in Landscape Edging, a unique and stylish choice that will weather and last as long as you need it.

When installed according to the manufacturer’s directions, plastic edging can be fairly durable as well, but if not installed deep enough or otherwise not following manufacturers’ instructions, it can raise out of the ground and need to be reinstalled periodically. “If your mulch settles or the plastic edging raises a bit out of the ground, your mower can make short work of the plastic,” Reiland notes.

Ease of Installation

Before you purchase landscape edging, research the product to know the level of effort involved. In general, the deeper you need to sink your landscape edging, the harder it is to install. In contrast, no-dig edging can be installed in just a few minutes by laying the edging along the edge of your garden beds and pounding in the stakes. Make sure you have the right tools on hand, such as a spade, rubber mallet, or garden gloves.

Most landscape edging is easier to install after a rain. If the weather has been dry, moisten the soil with a garden hose.

FAQ
  • What’s the easiest landscaping edging to install?

Generally, no-dig edging is the easiest edging to install. For most no-dig edging products, depending on the condition of the soil, it takes just minutes to lay the edging out and pound a few stakes into the ground with a rubber mallet to keep it secure. The Recycled Rubber Mulch Edging is a non-traditional edging that is as simple as unrolling where you want to create your border.

  • How do you install dig edging?

Some landscape edging, such as Grass Barrier - Landscape Edging, requires more than simply pounding it into the soil, especially if you want a weed and mulch barrier. You may have to dig a trench deep and wide enough to accommodate the material. In that case, be sure you have the appropriate tools, and take care not to injure any roots of plants you want to keep safe. Steer clear of any underground utility lines! (Your community should have a hotline you can call to verify the area is clear.)

  • What’s the least costly landscape edging to install?

Landscape edging is available in a range of styles and price ranges, depending on the type of material and length you choose. While there are many inexpensive options available, we like the EasyFlex 3100-20C-6 Heavy-Duty No-Dig Landscape Edging, which is just $1.12 per linear foot (at time of publish).
