Best Murphy Beds

The Spruce / David Hattan

If trying to optimize the available space in your home just feels impossible, it may be time to consider treating yourself to a Murphy bed. Holly Blakey, a professional organizer and owner of Breathing Room, tells us, “The two biggest benefits of a Murphy bed are the extra space it creates, and the ability to create an extra bedroom in a space that might not typically be able to house a bed.”

In addition to speaking with Blakey, we also interviewed interior decorators Tina Ramchandani and Micky Klein. Using their insights to guide us, we did our research and scoured customer reviews to find the most ideal Murphy beds with a variety of features across a spectrum of price points. Read on to see our picks for the best Murphy beds.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall

Red Barrel Studio Crossfell Bed

Crossfell Murphy Bed

What We Like
  • High weight limit

  • Smooth dual piston lift and lower mechanism

  • Durable steel frame

  • Includes built-in shelving

What We Don’t Like
  • Longer build time

  • Limited one-year warranty

Red Barrel’s Studio Crossfell Bed is a testament to the fact that a Murphy bed can be as good-looking as it is functional. Available in bark gray, chocolate, or white, and featuring Shaker-inspired trim and metal handles, it makes sense amidst any kind of decor. In terms of functionality, a dual-piston system makes the folding process seamless and smooth. Inside, a steel bed frame offers great durability, while flexible slats are designed to work with the curves of your body to aid in pressure absorption no matter what type of mattress you choose to use.

Customers appreciate this Murphy bed, noting that it’s not only a stylish addition but also very durably made. With a higher weight limit of 1,000 pounds, it’s a substantial piece of furniture. On the outside, it also features storage with two fixed shelves and three adjustable ones to accommodate you and whatever you need to hold.

One drawback with this piece is the assembly, with multiple reviewers (and the product description) noting that it’s certainly a two-person job to build. That, however, hasn’t prevented it from earning a 4.5 out of 5-star total rating on Wayfair for its quality, style, and durability.

Best for Small Spaces

Canora Grey Barham Bed

Canora Grey Barham Bed

What We Like
  • Multiple color options

  • Solid wood construction

  • Folds up compactly

  • Mattress included

What We Don’t Like
  • Mattress is too thin for some

  • Only one size available

While Murphy beds are already designed in an attempt to optimize space, Canora Grey’s Barham Bed takes that to a new level. By design, it just looks like an understated but elegant chest, measuring under 6 feet in width. Though it folds up into one wonderfully compact piece of furniture when not in use, the solid wood and metal frame of this bed is substantial, weighing 160 pounds total. Plus, with four color options (gray, cherry, chocolate, white) there’s certainly something here for everybody and every room style.

One drawback to this Murphy bed is that while it does come with a mattress, a few reviewers noted that it’s a thin one that requires a topper to make it more comfortable. Overall though, the majority of purchasers gave the whole bed a 5 out of 5-star rating, with comments ranging from appreciation for the clever design to approval of the overall quality of the build.

Bestar Pur Murphy Bed

Bestar Pur Queen Bed

What We Like
  • Durably built

  • Supports up to 1,000 pounds

  • 10-year warranty

  • Dual-piston mechanism makes opening and closing easy

What We Don’t Like
  • Assembly instructions are poor

  • No mattress included

For a classic Murphy bed that looks great but doesn’t offer any added extra frills, look no further than Bestar’s Pur Murphy Bed. It’s well-built and designed to handle every night use—not just when guests come. The combination of flexible slats, which are made for comfort, and a steel frame ensures a Murphy bed that is as comfortable as it is sturdy; it weighs 358 pounds and has a 1,000-pound weight limit to prove it. Blakey tells us that when it comes to Murphy beds, “The most important features are ease of use and durability. Since a Murphy bed pulls down from the wall, you’ll want to make sure it’s easy to bring down,” and this one is a breeze to pull down thanks to the dual-piston system.

Where this option falls short in some people’s eyes is in the assembly instructions. A lack of clarity does make this bed a bit frustrating to build. But that’s a mild hindrance, with 71 percent of reviewers giving this choice a 5 out of 5-star rating on Amazon.

Best Budget

Zipcode Design Colquitt Murphy Bed

Zipcode Design Colquitt Murphy Bed

What We Like
  • Slim 20-inch depth when folded

  • More affordable than other options

  • Available in both full and queen size

  • 10-year warranty

What We Don’t Like
  • Made with manufactured wood

  • Assembly is difficult

Don’t let the lower price tag fool you: Zipcode Design’s Colquitt Bed is an absolute home run. Its sleek and simplistic lines are a perfect addition to any contemporary space. Meanwhile, when it comes to comfort, Euro slats aid in preventing sag while offering pressure point relief. Additionally, the dual-piston design makes opening and closing it a breeze. It also makes a great fit in apartments or smaller rooms where space is limited, as the piece sticks out just 20 inches when closed.

Where this option appears to fall short in the eyes of a few purchasers is the quality of the materials; the manufactured wood isn’t the highest quality. This, however, is not a deal breaker, with plenty of other reviewers acknowledging that, for the price, it’s a great deal. Plus, a 30-day return policy allows you to see for yourself just how it works for you while a 10-year warranty will help keep your mind at ease.

Best With Desk

Bestar Luminia Murphy Bed with Desk

Bestar Luminia Murphy Bed with Desk

What We Like
  • Highly versatile uses

  • 1,000-pound weight limit

  • Built-in LED lights

  • 10-year manufacturer’s warranty

What We Don’t Like
  • Takes three people to build

  • Doesn’t include concrete screws

We love Bestar’s Lumina Full Murphy Bed With Desk because it takes all of the space saving efficiency of a Murphy bed and optimizes it even further. If you’re living in a smaller space, like a studio, this is a great choice: When closed, it turns into a desk for you to work at, eat at, or send emails from. And when it’s time to head to bed, the 1,000-pound weight capacity of the bed frame will keep you secure and comfortable. Like all of Bestar’s Murphy beds, Euroslats work to make sure your mattress is supported and that you have a comfortable night of sleep.

With Bestar recommending three people to build this, it’s definitely a serious undertaking, and reviewers noted as much themselves. But with the convenience of the desk, plus the handy dimmable LED lights that are built in, this is a great option for someone who wants their Murphy bed to do more than just be slept on.

Resource Furniture LGM Rotating Wall Bed with Library and Table

Resource Furniture

What We Like
  • Lifetime warranty

  • Includes mattress

  • Sustainably sourced materials

  • Pairs with additional components to add storage space

What We Don’t Like
  • Expensive

  • Two to four week lead time

Our choice for the best splurge option is the LGM Clei Rotating Wall Bed, which offers everything you would want from a piece of furniture with such a high price tag. The sleek design catches the eye, as it looks more like something from a movie rather than something you could really have in your home. It features a patented revolving system that ensures all of your items on the shelves don’t move, even while you’re using the bed. It’s also customizable, with dozens of lacquer, fabric, and leather choices, so you’ll get exactly the color you want. This Murphy bed even features an optional add-on with a fold-down desk.

Other than the glaring drawback of the price, this product really seems to live up to its hype, with 5 out of 5-star reviews abounding. While the price tag is just the starting point, and a quote needs to be requested before purchasing, the sustainable sourcing and lifetime warranty make this bed more of an investment than anything else.

Murphy Bed NYC’s Luxoria White With Shelves and Sofa is perfect for anybody looking for a two-in-one from their Murphy bed. Well, technically, this piece is so versatile, it’s actually more like four pieces in one! Featuring a couch when closed, this bed can easily be opened and converted into a bed with a headboard. Like other space-saving choices, this is perfect for anybody who is trying to make their space as optimal and convenient as possible. Additionally, you’re not just getting a bed and sofa in one piece. You’re also getting built-in shelving, which adds to your available storage space and gives you even more options when it comes to stashing items and placing decor. And we really like that the mattress is optional, but you do have choices of both spring and memory foam available.

A drawback with this option is it can take up to three weeks to arrive. But reviewers really praise the customer service Murphy Bed NYC provides, and with free shipping across North America, it gets a green light from us.

  • Lifetime warranty

  • Automatic folding legs

  • Wide range of bed sizes

  • Available in both vertical and horizontal options

What We Don’t Like
  • Pricey for what you get

Made with alloy steel, it provides a durable base that can hold up to 661 pounds, and it can be paired with any type of mattress up to 12 inches thick.

One drawback with this simplified bed kit, however, is it’s not that much cheaper than other options that feature the structure encasing the bed. However, it’s a great option for someone who really wants a minimal design. Plus, purchasers like how easy it is to assemble, the customer service, and the overall quality.

Best With Storage

Bestar Pur Murphy Bed and 2 Shelving Units with Drawers

Bestar Pur Murphy Bed and 2 Shelving Units with Drawers

What We Like
  • Plenty of storage space

  • Four color options

  • 10-year manufacturer’s warranty

What We Don’t Like
  • Packaging is not great

  • Only a 30-day trial

As Blakey tells us, “Drawers are always an extra bonus especially if you’re short on space,” which is why we love Bestar’s Queen Murphy Bed With 2 Shelving Units and Drawers. The design alone makes this bed a viable choice for any room in your house. The Shaker-inspired trim and metal handles provide a stylish look, and the shelving gives you plenty of added storage space. This Murphy bed features two fixed shelves, three adjustable or removable shelves, and three drawers which operate on smooth ball-bearing slides to avoid any jamming. The drawers make it a potential replacement for a dresser, helping you to really make the most of the space you have.

One complaint that comes up in customer reviews is this bed doesn’t come in the best packaging; it may arrive dusty or dirty. However, this doesn’t detract from the built-in perks of this piece, from the smooth-rolling and deep drawers to the quick open-and-close mechanism of the bed.

Final Verdict

Our pick for the best overall Murphy bed is the Red Barrel Studio Crossfell Bed for its stylish look, higher weight limit, and the storage space that the shelves provide. If you’re in the market for something more affordable, we love the Zipcode Design Colquitt Bed for its lower price point, the simple yet functional no-frills design, and a solid 10-year warranty.

What to Look for in a Murphy Bed

In order to find the right Murphy bed, you need to understand what your space can allow. In general, a queen-size Murphy bed will fall between 87 to 89 inches in height and 64 to 68 inches in width. However, not all Murphy beds are standard, and Ramchandani tells us that she “always ensure[s] the space can handle a Murphy bed. They can pull down in different directions, so ensure you’re getting the right one for your room.”

Some Murphy beds are more substantial than your typical bed frame, and including additional space for shelves or drawers that might be included, they can measure upward of 10 feet wide. Conversely, there are options that are very minimal (and space-saving!) in design, measuring just the footprint of the mattress and frame itself, like the Wall Bed King Horizontal Wall Beds, Queen Wallbed Kit. We like this option for its smaller size, while still being able to hold up to 661 pounds on its convenient automatic legs.

Like all furniture, Murphy beds are made from a wide variety of materials. But, it’s a substantial piece of furniture, so it’s worth getting something that’s quality made. Klein recommends purchasing a Murphy bed that is made with “wood, hardwood, or plywood,” which are three durable choices to make sure that it lasts. For this, we recommend the Canora Grey Barham Bed because it’s made from rubberwood, which is particularly durable. We also like that it comes with a mattress.

While many of the Murphy beds on our list can be assembled as easy DIY projects, there’s also no shortage of people in the product reviews talking about how tedious these beds are to build. So, if you’re someone who enjoys the process of putting together furniture and feels confident, then you should have no trouble with assembly, regardless of which bed you choose. However, Ramchandani says she “always recommend[s] having a professional install anything that’s installed on a wall.” Blakey echoes this, saying she “would recommend utilizing an installation service or a handyman.” For that reason, if you’re nervous about trying to attach the bed to the wall, we highly recommend the LGM Clei Rotating Wall Bed, which offers professional installation at an additional cost in local service areas.

Murphy beds are oftentimes designed with locking hinges to hold them in place when they’re not in use. Additionally, they’re often installed attached to a wall, which means that they should be locked in place firmly. For this reason, Ramchandani tells us that they are “totally safe to use, and easy to pull down and put away.” We do recommend following Blakey’s advice to “read reviews, warranties and talk to people who have bought one,” so you know the quality of what you are purchasing. In terms of safety, we particularly like the Bestar Queen Murphy Bed and 2 Shelving Units With Drawers because it attaches both to the wall and the floor for extra sturdiness.

Standout Features

Furniture options

Murphy beds are intended to really let you do more with your space, and some companies take it a step further by including furniture built into the structure. Some, like the Murphy Bed NYC Luxoria White With Shelves and Sofa, come equipped with a couch, while others, like the Bestar Lumina Full Murphy Bed With Desk, include a desk. These are both good options, according to Ramchandani, who says she “love[s] the versions with storage or a desk attached, because you can get great use out of your spaces.”

Storage Options

Murphy beds like the Red Barrel Studio Crossfell Bed come equipped with shelves built-in, making them a great option for anybody who needs extra storage. Similarly, if you are really trying to optimize your space, you can go with an option like the Bestar Queen Murphy Bed and Two Shelving Units With Drawers. The added storage space makes it perfect for someone who doesn’t want to have both a bed and a dresser taking up a lot of space in their room.

  • How much does a Murphy bed cost?

Murphy beds can cost anywhere between $1,200 to well over $10,000. While you may be able to find cheaper options, keep in mind this is a substantial piece of furniture, and it’s worth making sure you’re getting something of quality before spending the money. While something over $1,000 may seem like a lot, Klein tells us they’re usually worth it for “the reasons of space saving and making a room multipurpose.”

  • Do you use a box spring with a Murphy bed?

Murphy beds do not use or need box springs. The mattresses need to be able to fit within the Murphy bed itself, and a box spring can make it too clunky. As a result, they’re designed with other features including slats that are specifically engineered to work with a Murphy bed.

  • How much weight will a Murphy bed hold?

This will vary depending on the manufacturer, which is why it’s very important to be clear–and to  make sure you read the product specifications before purchasing one. Some Murphy beds can hold over 1,000 pounds, but others can only hold around 350 pounds. It’s also important to account for the weight of your mattress when determining what bed will be ideal for you.

  • How thick of a mattress do I need for a Murphy bed?

While it may seem like being confined would mean the mattress should be thinner with a Murphy bed, this isn’t actually the case. Again, this is individual to the brand, so it’s important to read the specifications beforehand, but most Murphy beds can accommodate mattresses that fall within the standard range of 9 to 12 inches of thickness.
