The 10 Best Non-Slip Mats of 2022

The Spruce / Sabrina Jiang

Bath and shower mats should be absorbent, have octopus-like suction to stay in place, offer a non-slip surface and, of course, look stylish. Of course, that’s a lot to ask of a basic bathroom accessory, which is why searching for the perfect bath mat isn’t so simple or straightforward. Water, soap, and shampoo can turn shower floors and bathtubs into slippery, accident-prone places. Adding a slip-resistant mat cushions your feet, gives them something to grip, and reduces the chance of falls. A great non-slip bath mat can add a bit of style into your bathroom, too.

To help us research the best options available, we spoke with expert Jacky Chou, Principal and Director at Archute and owner of Laurel & Wolf. We also considered a wide selection of different bath mats, assessing each one based on size, materials, and care instructions, plus the non-slip or grippiness of the material in question.

What We Like
  • Oversized for more coverage

  • Strong suction and grip

  • Drainage and airflow holes prevent mold and mildew

  • Comfortable underfoot

What We Don’t Like
  • May not adhere to textured floors or surfaces

The Gorilla Grip Patented Shower and Bath Mat is our top choice for a secure, sticky, and stylish shower mat–it’ll stay in place and keep you upright even when slick with soap. Featuring more than 300 suction cups on its underside, this mat provides a firm hold on smooth shower and tub floors, and the abundance of drainage holes allows water to easily flow under the mat toward the drain, preventing it from pooling around your feet. These holes also allow air to circulate more freely, which prevents mold and mildew. The oversized textured mat is soft under tender feet, and it comes in 20 fun opaque and translucent colors like mint, purple, and charcoal.

Even better, the plastic this non-slip bath mat is made from is machine washable, and customer reviews report that it shows no sign of wear even after multiple cleanings. Just keep in mind that it may not adhere as strongly to textured floors or surfaces (though most customers say it works great in showers and tubs of all kinds!)

Best Bath Stone Mat

 Sutera Stone Bath Mat

Amazon

What We Like
  • Dries almost instantly

  • Non-slip surface

  • Antimicrobial

What We Don’t Like
  • More expensive than regular bath mats

  • Not the softest underfoot

Stone bath mats are a totally different breed of absorbent, non-slip mat. Typically made of lightweight, sturdy diatomaceous earth, stone varieties are designed to absorb large amounts of water and wick away moisture, so when you step out of the bath or shower, you’ll feel a clean and dry surface under your feet. The Sutera Stone Bath Mat is our favorite, thanks to its long-lasting and eco-friendly design. This mat repels moisture and dries almost instantly, a detail that keeps the mat antimicrobial and more hygienic than fabric alternatives. The surface is engraved with a unique pattern to provide a grip to prevent slipping when stepping out of the shower.

Along with the stone itself, a non-skid mat is included. Put this underneath the stone for added grip. Sutera also includes a sanding tool, which you’ll use to buff the mat periodically to keep it clean. When it comes to price, this stone non-slip mat is more expensive than other products, but it’s designed to last longer. While it isn’t the cushiest or softest underfoot, customers love the textured surface for its added grip and slip prevention.

Union Rustic Cathrine Rectangle Teak & Wood Non-Slip Shower Mat

Union Rustic Cathrine Rectangle Teak & Wood Non-Slip Shower Mat

Wayfair

What We Like
  • Constructed from natural teak wood

  • Resists mold and mildew

  • Features ventilation and airflow

What We Don’t Like
  • Wood does require regular maintenance

  • Can only be treated by hand

Bring spa vibes to your home with Union Rustic’s Cathrine Teak & Wood Non-Slip Shower Mat! Made out of responsibly harvested teak wood, this bath and shower mat is an eco-friendly choice that provides a nicely sturdy surface for wet feet. The natural wood material also means that each mat has its own style, with unique color and size variations. This mat is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, too, thanks to its teak and wood construction and the ventilation provided by the open slats.

This non-slip mat does feature an oiled finish, and to maintain that sleek look, you’ll need to apply oil regularly to keep the wood in its best shape. Without this regular maintenance, the wood can dry out, crack, and develop visible wear. However, we think it’s perfect for any space, from your bathroom to your spa or pool. Thanks to details like its rubber feet, elevation off the floor, and fast drying material, it’s an all-around winner if you don’t mind splurging.

What We Like
  • Slip- and stain-resistant material

  • Eco-friendly and heavy-duty bamboo construction

  • Easy to clean and maintain

What We Don’t Like
  • Too small for inside the shower

  • May have rough spots on surface

ToiletTree’s Deluxe Natural Bamboo Bath Mat is made out of 100 percent natural bamboo, which makes it both hardy and stylish. It’ll add a touch of luxury into your bathroom, all while keeping your feet firmly on the ground. This wooden mat can be used on the shower floor or outside the tub, though customer reviews do note that it’s pretty small for inside-the-shower use; you’ll want to place it just outside the entryway instead. The mat’s vented design circulates air through the slats, allowing it to dry quickly while letting excess water drain and evaporate. And although the mat is thick and made of bamboo, it feels soft underfoot. If you notice any slight rough spots, you can easily sand them smooth.

Most importantly, this natural bath mat is skid-resistant, stain-resistant, and comes with anti-slip feet. Bamboo mats are extremely easy to clean, too; simply wipe them down with warm water and let them air dry. Although the up-front price may seem expensive, they last longer than regular shower mats, offering a better value in the long run.

Best Square Mat

SlipX Solutions Accu-Fit Square Shower Mat

SlipX Solutions Square Shower Mat

Amazon

What We Like
  • Large with plenty of floor coverage

  • Durable with strong grip

  • Mildew-resistant PEVA material

What We Don’t Like
  • Doesn’t stick to textured floors

  • Does have a texture underfoot

The durable SlipX Solutions Shower Mat is a great solution for square-shaped showers that need more floor coverage. This non-slip bath mat measures 27 x 27 inches in size, which provides 65 percent more coverage than standard stall shower mats. With 100 powerful suction cups, it also attaches securely to your shower floor (however, it may not adhere so strongly to textured floors). The textured design feels soft under your feet, and it provides plenty of non-slip traction as you move around inside the shower. The large center drain hole and the multitude of drain holes in the mat allow for effective drainage, and the PEVA material itself is mildew-resistant, so you don’t have to battle any messy cleaning.

We love that this mat is machine washable. If you’re looking for an even easier solution, you can simply rinse it and hang it dry. The 10 fashionable color options, which match any design aesthetic, are another great perk. While you will definitely feel the texture of this mat under your feet while you shower, it’s not a drawback that we think takes anything away from its functionality, sturdiness, and easy care nature.

Best Budget Mat

AmazerBath Bath Tub Mat

AmazerBath Bath Tub Mat

Amazon

What We Like
  • Covers the full length of the tub

  • Affordable price

  • Machine-washable

  • Multiple color options

What We Don’t Like
  • Smells when you first open the package

  • Only adheres to smooth tub surfaces

If you’re on a budget, the AmazerBath Bathtub mat is an affordable option that’s plenty grippy. Reviewers love the subtle textured pattern on this oversize bath mat, which adds traction underfoot in addition to some extra comfort while you shower or take a bath. The 200 powerful suction cups on the underside ensure that this mat stays in place, while the subtle pattern offers plenty of non-skid protection. The bath mat also features 176 drain holes, which quickly drain water to keep it dry and clean after each use. The generous length means it will cover your tub from end to end, and one side features a cut-out to fit around your drain.

While this made is made from PVC, it’s surprisingly easy to care for; you can actually toss it in your washing machine to get it clean. Just keep in mind that it’s intended for use only on clean, smooth surfaces; it won’t grip texture tub floors well. Another minor complaint that buyers mention is the mat smells plasticly when opening the package. You can try wiping it down with baking soda and water before using it, which should eliminate any unwanted smells.

  • Kid-friendly colors and design

  • Skid-resistant

  • Clingy suction cups

What We Don’t Like
  • Can have an unpleasant smell after opening

  • Color dots can fall off with wear

Keep your kiddos safe with Munchkin’s Dandy Dots Bath Mat. This candy-colored non-slip bath mat is bright and inviting, and it offers a fun way to engage, entertain, and educate your child by naming colors while you wash them down. The big dots also provide little ones with traction so they won’t slip and slide in the tub or shower. A series of skid-resistant suction cups hold the mat securely in place. And if you’re worried about the ingredients that went into making this rubber mat, you can rest easy knowing it’s BPA- and latex-free.

This mat doesn’t stick well to textured surfaces like tile. The Dandy Dots bath mat is best used on smooth surfaces and floors. SlipX Solutions Pillow Top Safety Bath Mat

SlipX Solutions Pillow Top Safety Bath Mat

Amazon

What We Like
  • Extra-plus air cushioning

  • Resists fading, cracking, and tearing

  • Grippy suction on smooth surfaces

What We Don’t Like
  • No drain holes

  • Runs somewhat small

Make your shower or bath extra comfortable, and soothe tired feet with the SlipX Solutions Pillow Top Bath Mat. Made of thick natural rubber, the mat weighs over three pounds, making it thicker and heavier than most of our selections. This extra weight, according to customers, helps give stability to unsteady feet.

When it comes to durability, this non-slip bath mat is a standout. Its material resists fading, cracking or tearing, ensuring that it will hold up over time, and the 200 suction cups on the underside firmly secure the mat to the tub for safety. At 27 inches long, this mat provides a fair amount of floor coverage; however, some customers do say that it runs small for larger baths and showers. Rebrilliant White Spa Pebbles Bathtub Mat

Blue Spa Pebbles Bathtub Mat Blue Spa Pebbles Bathtub Mat Blue Spa Pebbles Bathtub Mat

Wayfair

What We Like
  • Stylish pebble design

  • Mold- and mildew-resistant

  • Plenty of drainage

  • Works inside and outside showers and tubs

What We Don’t Like
  • Too narrow for some bathrooms

  • Surface might not be textured enough for some

Designed to resemble natural pebbles, the surface of the Rebrilliant Spa Pebbles Bathtub Mat consists of small and large circles that help prevent slipping and sliding in the bath or on your bathroom floor. Equipped with 200 suction cups that keep this mat firmly in place, it provides a great balance of underfoot texture and strong non-slip grip for safer bathing. Although it’s made out of PVC, the mat is free of BPA and latex, with a final product that’s non-toxic, antimicrobial, and mold- and mildew-resistant. The spacing between each of the mat’s pebbles also ensures there’s plenty of drainage to keep water from puddling, and feet from slipping.

While we love the pebbled texture of this grippy non-slip bath mat and its versatility, some customer reviews do note that it might not be textured enough for every user’s preferences. If you’re particularly worried about traction, the smoothness of the individual “pebbles” may not be enough underfoot. It does run a bit narrow, but we love that this mat can be cut to size if needed, for smaller or more uniquely shaped bathrooms.

KMAT Non-Slip Mat

KMAT Non-Slip Mat

Amazon

What We Like
  • BPA-, latex-, and phthalate-free material

  • Textured non-slip surface

  • Easy to customize fit and size

What We Don’t Like
  • Might not be large enough for some bathrooms

  • Limited color choices

If you’re searching for a non-slip bath mat that does its job well and is made of eco-friendly materials, KMAT’s Non-Slip Mat delivers. This mat feels like rubber underfoot, but it’s made out of thermoplastic elastomers that are free of BPA, latex, and phthalates. It features a textured surface for additional non-skid performance, and it’s secured to your shower, tub, or bathroom floor with hundreds of suction cups that cling tightly to the floor surface. Just get the mat damp, and it’ll hold strong wherever it’s placed. As an added perk, hundreds of built-in drain holes allow water to circulate and flow away, helping to reduce the risk of slipping and falls and prevent the buildup of mold and mildew. We also like how easy this mat is to cut to size so you can achieve the perfect fit for your tub or shower.

The three stylish neutral colors fit your home’s decor, but they do somewhat limit your options if you’re looking for a particular hue. While this mat is easy to trim down, customers do note that it’s not always a good fit for larger tubs, showers, or bathrooms. Double-check the size before ordering, to ensure that you’re getting the right fit.

Reetual Modern Non-Slip Bathtub and Shower Mat

Ritual Modern Non-Slip Bathtub and Shower Mat

Amazon

What We Like
  • Vibrant designs

  • Extra-long length

  • Heavy-duty suction

What We Don’t Like
  • Doesn’t stick to textured surfaces

  • Not highly textured

Add some fun, vibrant colors to your bathroom with Reetual’s Modern Non-Slip Bathtub and Shower Mat, an oversized bath mat inspired by international artists. The 200 heavy-duty suction cups provide powerful grip for stability, and the anti-slip texture will save you from skidding across the tub even in soapy, sudsy water. Plenty of holes perforate this mat and allow water to drain through, and the padding makes it comfortable enough to stand or sit on. The extra-long length offers ample coverage for bathtubs. It’s recommended that you let the mat dry after each use, and if you use oils in your bath, make sure you wash off the mat to prevent it from developing a slippery film over time.

Just keep in mind that Reetual’s non-slip bath mats aren’t highly textured on their upper surfaces. That can make them a little slicker for those with stability or balance issues, but for the average user, the slight texturing should offer perfectly suitable grip underfoot.

Final Verdict

Our top choice is the Gorilla Grip Patented Shower and Bath Mat, which offers the most suction cups and plenty of coverage underfoot, thanks to its larger size. The highly textured upper surface is equally traction-enhancing and comfy under bare feet. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, we like the AmazerBath Bathtub Mat for its grippy suction and plenty of non-skid protection.

What to Look for When Buying Non-Slip Mats

Material

Most shower mats offer slip resistance of some kind and level, but the materials vary. Look for mats made with a non-toxic material that doesn’t contain chemicals like BPA (often used to manufacture plastics), which has been linked to health risks. “Rubber is a durable material that provides good traction and grip, even when wet,” recommends Jacky Chou, principal and director at Archute, and owner of Laurel & Wolf. Alternately, vinyl mats are lightweight, easy to clean and come in various colors and designs, he continues.

Size

Size is an important consideration for bathtub and shower mats. The ideal mat should measure at least 25 x 16 inches, but you can choose larger for more coverage if necessary. Make sure to measure your shower or bathtub before buying a mat so you buy a perfectly fitting product.

Care and Cleaning

Bath mats can be a breeding ground for bacteria, according to a study by the American Society for Microbiology, so even the highest-quality shower mat should be cleaned often. Because they are in the dampest room in the house, bath mats are the perfect place for mold and mildew to grow, which is why Chou recommends cleaning them regularly “to remove grime, mildew and dirt buildup.” Depending on the material of your mat, “you may be able to wipe it down with a damp cloth or sponge,” but others are machine washable. “Harsh chemicals, such as bleach or ammonia, can damage some materials, so it’s best to use mild soap and water for cleaning,” he recommends.

FAQ
  • What are the best non-slip materials?

Bathtub and shower mats are made of foam-based, synthetic, or wooden materials. While synthetic mats dry easily, they may be less comfortable. Wooden mats are elegant, last longer and generally require less maintenance, but they aren’t as comfortable as other materials.

  • Can I use a towel as a non-slip bath mat?

According to Chou, “Towels can get the job done, but avoid using them, because they don’t offer the same slip-resistant qualities you need.” He suggests using non-slip strips or decals if you don’t want to use a mat.

  • Do non-slip bath mats damage tubs or flooring?

As long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions, your floor or tub should be fine, according to Chou. “Avoid mats with strong adhesives, check the suction cups to see if they are leaving marks, dry the mat often, and handle it carefully when placing or removing it,” says Chou.

  • How often should you replace bath mats?

Bath and shower mats are one of the most used items in your bathroom, but they’re very durable. The rule of thumb is to replace them every two years. Regularly check the suction cups, because you should replace the mat when they lose their grip.
