While you might be used to seeing the term “organic” at the grocery store, organic mattresses are quickly rising in popularity, particularly among the eco-conscious set. But what makes a mattress organic?
When choosing an organic mattress, you’ll want to check that it’s certified by a reliable third party to ensure that the components and manufacturing process meet specific standards. There is a wide range of certifications available for mattresses, depending on the type of mattress and materials used. We also recommend closely reading the warranty fine print—not only does selecting a long-lasting mattress help ensure that you end up with a quality product, but it also means you won’t have to replace it quickly (and send the old one to a landfill).
According to Tim Masters, founder of My Green Mattress and Master Mattress Craftsman, you'll want to consider your preferred firmness and thickness in a mattress, too. To help you find the right mattress for your needs, we spent hours researching and testing some of the top eco-conscious options on the market. Ahead, our pick of organic mattresses for a guilt-free night’s sleep.

Avocado
Super comfortable
Breathable materials
Comes with two handles
25-year limited warranty
Expensive
Paid white glove shipping
Strongly smells of wool
Scoring high marks across the board, Avocado’s Green Mattress is one of our top picks for organic mattresses. In our testing, we found that this hybrid mattress offers the right combination of softness and support, thanks to the latex cushioning and pocketed coils. With five zones of support, it's simultaneously firm and flexible. The mattress is designed to adjust to your curves and contours throughout the night, keeping you from sinking in the center. And a pillow top feels luxurious and comfortable.
In terms of certifications, the Avocado Green Mattress meets the gold standard. It’s constructed from organic materials with certifications, including layers of GOLS, eco-INSTITUT, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, FSC, and Rainforest Alliance-certified Dunlop latex, and organic wool, which acts as a natural fire retardant. The GOTS-certified organic cotton cover is moisture-wicking, letting you sleep cool.
We noted in our testing that this mattress had an unusual odor, which we attributed to the wool material. The smell dissipated after about a month, but it's still something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to odors. On the plus side, the hand-done needle tufting nixes the need to use any toxic adhesives in the mattress. Offering great edge support, the heavy-duty handles let you lug it around with relative ease. You can pick the standard medium-firm version or go for the pricier pillow top version. You can also opt for paid white glove delivery to ensure this Made Safe-certified mattress is plopped right into your bedroom.

It comes bundled in a breathable, GOTS-certified organic cotton jersey cover.
You can pick either the 2- or the 3-inch topper to elevate your sleep experience and improve the feel of a sinking, saggy mattress. The latex is also flecked with pin holes during manufacturing, adding to the airflow and breathability so you don’t wake up sweaty.
To ensure rigorous safety in your home and its organic status, Brentwood Home’s topper is GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, eco-INSTITUT and GREENGUARD Gold certified. The company is Climate Neutral certified, meaning they strive to reduce their emissions (while offsetting the rest).

What to Look for in an Organic Mattress
Material
Tim Masters, Founder of My Green Mattress and Master Mattress Craftsman, recommends looking for mattresses made from breathable and/or cooling materials like wool, cotton, and latex. A mattress is constructed with several layers—certain layers are for stability and support, some are for soft cushion, and an exterior cover will offer the mattress some protection. Our shortlist of organic mattresses features materials like rubber latex, wool, and cotton, along with steel coils.
Firmness
This is critical, as the right firmness plays a large role in how you sleep at night. “If your mattress is not supportive or firm enough—you will be at risk for backaches and poor sleep,” says Masters. Most mattress companies follow a 10-point scale, with 1 meaning extra soft, while a 9 or 10 translates to an extra-hard mattress with practically no sinkage. However, each mattress company typically defines firmness as per its own set criteria.
Thickness
Most mattresses today are between 10 and 15 inches thick—but according to Masters, if a mattress is too thin or too thick, you might not feel comfortable. “The mattress size is based on the sleeper's preference and bedroom dimensions," he says. "Any mattress that is eight inches thick or thicker will support and contour to an adult body.” While back and stomach sleepers can consider an 8- to 12-inch-thick mattress, side sleepers should look for thicknesses of 12 to 20 inches.
Certifications
When shopping for an organic mattress, you'll want to look for reliable third-party certifications to ensure that the mattress you're buying actually follows through on the company's claims. Jillian Pritchard Cooke, Founder and CEO of Wellness Within Your Walls, recommends considering the following third-party certifications:
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
- GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard
- USDA Organic (US Department of Agriculture Organic)
- CertiPUR-US (meeting standards for content, emissions, and durability in foam)
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (tested and proven free of harmful levels of toxic substances)
- GREENGUARD Gold (certified for low VOC emissions)
- FSC (wood harvested from responsibly managed forests)
- Cradle-to-Cradle (safe, circular, and responsibly made)
- Rainforest Alliance (supports social, economic, and environmental concerns)
Warranty
As with any large purchase, when you're buying an organic mattress, you'll want to make sure that it has a sufficiently long warranty that will protect you if anything goes wrong with the mattress. “It is important to look for a mattress company with a warranty that covers it for up to 20 years," says Masters. "A mattress that is built to last is more sustainable, meaning that fewer mattresses will wind up in a landfill over time."
-
What are the benefits of an organic mattress?
Certified organic mattresses often "contain less toxins, such as VOCs and flame retardants, as verified by third-party certifications,” says Pritchard Cooke. Organic mattresses can be eco-friendly, too. “They’re generally more durable as they are made with higher quality materials," says Cooke. "Most exceed the average longevity of a regular mattress, which is eight years.”
-
Are organic mattresses worth the money?
While it may cost more than a mass-produced mattress, some experts argue that a certified organic mattress is a worthy investment (one that "should be comparable to a decent conventional mattress from one of the big-name brands,” says Masters). Organic mattresses typically include materials such as costly natural latex, cotton, and wool, usually supported by expensive third-party certifications, all of which add to the mattress price.
-
How long do organic mattresses last?
The lifespan of a mattress largely depends on the materials used. Natural latex mattresses are considered more durable and resilient, with an average lifespan of 15 years. Wool is fire-resistant and a natural insulator and can last for years. Breathable organic cotton is considered durable, too. To extend the lifespan of your mattress, you can use a protector or topper. You’ll know it’s time to replace your mattress when it sags in the center or is visibly worn and torn.
