  • In-person stores

What We Don’t Like
  • Purchases from third-party sellers are non-returnable

Like Amazon, Walmart is another giant store, with a major online presence as well as tons of brick-and-mortar locations for in-person shopping.

Walmart’s website is well designed for finding the desk that’s the right fit for your home. While the store has hundreds of options, filters make it easy to narrow your search. For instance, you can browse by the materials used in the desk (such as glass, wood, and metal) as well as the desk’s finish and features. The filters for features may be particularly helpful, allowing you to look at desks that have drawers or keyboard trays or a hutch, you can check off those items, along with many other common desk features.

Once you’ve chosen your desired filters, you’ll have narrowed down the results so that you have a manageable number of options to review. Photos of the individual desks make evaluating them easy.

Along with a wide variety of standard desks, the Container Store also gives you the option to create a customized desk to suit your space. What to Look for When Buying a Desk

Size

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the right size desk. This includes the type of work that you do, the kind of equipment you use to do your job, how much you like to spread out while working, and the dimensions of the room where you plan to install your desk. Laptop minimalists might prefer a petite set up in the corner of a room. Those with lots of desk gear are better suited to having a large desk to accommodate a desktop computer, printer, desk lamp, desk organizer, and assorted knick-knacks. Kids should have kid-sized furniture that’s comfortable for them to use.

Built-In storage

Not everyone wants or needs a lot of storage in a desk. Some prefer a simple tabletop and to keep all their equipment in their work bag. Others might get by with a single drawer for pens, spare chargers, and other small desk accessories. Those who do a lot of paperwork or who like to have their arsenal of office supplies at hand should look for a desk with built-in drawers, filing cabinets, and other old-school features easily found on vintage desks. And digital minimalists who can’t stand the sight of a power cord can opt for a sleek contemporary desk with stealth built-in cord storage.

Material

Deciding what type of material you would like your desk to be is partly a matter of preference and style. But it’s not exclusively about looks. A wood desk is nostalgic and it feels homey and warm to sit at, but it’s also sensitive to scratches and water marks. A streamlined desk with a lacquered finish will create a contemporary vibe that some people enjoy and others find cold. A vintage metal desk has retro charm and timeless appeal, but metal gets cold to the touch in winter, is prone to dings, and requires maintenance to keep it from rusting over time.

FAQ
  • How tall is a desk?

The standard desk height is approximately 30 inches. And like all one-size-fits-all measurements, it doesn’t, especially if you are on the shorter or taller side of average. Desks with wooden legs can be cut down to work for shorter people, and adjustable desks can be a good solution for taller people. If you’re under 5’3” and on the petite side, you might want to look for a vintage or even a child’s desk, which might work better for you.

  • How do you organize a desk?

In general, you will want the central part of the workspace to be clear for your keyboard, laptop, or paperwork. A task light can be placed in the upper right or left corner according to your preference. Desk organizers should be placed on the periphery at arm’s reach. And any personal items or knick-knacks can float and be moved around at will (stress ball, we’re looking at you).

  • How do you hide cords on a desk?

This depends on the style of the desk. Vintage desks made in the age of the quill pen, the typewriter, and the oil lamp won’t have hidden cord storage. You can buy a cord organizer that will keep things tidy. Or DIY modify a wooden desk to accommodate cord wrangling by drilling a hole in a drawer or the back of the desktop to feed cords through. If you really can’t stand the sight of cords, look for contemporary desks with built-in cord concealing compartments that will keep them out of sight.
