What to Look for in a Scarf Organizer

Whether you opt for boxes, hangers, or drawer organizers, there are countless ways to tidy up your scarf collection. If you want to put your scarves on a shelf or under the bed, a storage box might be the best option—however, this one requires utmost organization. “The downside to storing scarves in a box is that if you don’t roll them, then they can easily get jumbled and at least one scarf will end up on the bottom of the box, making it harder to find when you need it,” says Britnee Tanner, a professional home organizer. With that said, a box can also be useful because all of your scarves are contained. If you roll each one, it’s an easy system to maintain. For hanging solutions, you’ll want to consider your space. “A hanging rack can be useful for small spaces because of the vertical design,” Tanner explains. The downside, though, is that scarves can more easily fall off and tend to stay hidden behind other clothing in your closet, because they’re not secured well on the hanging organizer. “You really need to make sure that the scarf is secure with some kind of fold or loose knot to keep it from slipping off and onto the ground,” says Tanner.

What is the best way to store scarves?
Tanner says the best way to store scarves completely depends on both your space options and how you want to use them. “If you’re a minimalist with just a few scarves, then hanging them using a specific accessory hanger or belt and tie rack is always a solution,” she explains. “However, rolling scarves and storing them in an open-top box or basket is a really trusty solution because they stay in place, and you can always find the one you’re looking for just by glancing in the bin,” she adds.
Butler also suggests hanging scarves from a hook (especially your most-worn options) for easier access.

How do you roll a scarf for storage?
Rolling scarves for storage is actually quite easy. “The best way is to take the scarf from one end and hold it in the palm of your other hand, then gently wrap the scarf around your hand until you have only a little fabric left,” says Butler. To secure it in place, simply tuck that little piece of corner fabric into the middle of the circle. This technique is similar to rolling appliance cords, and also looks like a cute little fabric cinnamon roll when finished.

How do you hang scarves on a scarf hanger?
“No matter what type of hanging organizer you have, you want to prevent scarves from falling off the hooks or hanger with a simple folding method first,” says Tanner. “You can do this by folding your scarf in half, then fold it in half again, and loop the loose ends of the scarf through the opening you create (as if tying a shoelace),” she adds. From there, you can hang your scarf on a hook or hanger with the loosely knotted area on the hook to keep it in place and prevent any slipping.
Some scarf hangers feature a design made up of circles that you thread the scarves through. When organizing your collection this way, Butler says to choose the appropriate thickness of the scarf (as some holes might be smaller or bigger than others) and “feed it through the hole so each side is hanging evenly.”
