Best Silk Sheets

When it comes to comfort while sleeping, the ultimate luxury is a bed draped in silk sheets. “Like silk clothing, silk bedding feels sensuously soft on the skin. Additionally, pure silk regulates temperature for optimum comfort in any weather, because it absorbs moisture in humid weather, keeping you cool and helping retain heat when it’s cold,” says Nina Edwards Anker, architectural designer and director and founder of nea studio.

After researching and testing the attributes of various brands across different price points, we’ve arrived at this shortlist of the best silk sheets to slumber in. Our top pick, the Lilysilk 19 Momme Seamless Silk Sheets Set, is constructed to last with breathable, moisture-wicking fabric.

Here are the best silk sheets for cool, sumptuous comfort while sleeping.

Lilysilk 19 Momme Seamless Silk Sheets Set

What We Like
  • Available in multiple colors

  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified

  • Seamless construction

  • Wear- and tear-resistant

What We Don't Like
  • Professional dry cleaning recommended

  • Whole set can be pricey

Described by customers as soft, silky, and cool on skin, the sublime seamless set from Lilysilk is our top choice for its sleek style and durability. Beautifully constructed from a large, single swathe of 19 momme (or density) Grade A mulberry silk, the seamless silk sheets are more durable than their seamed counterparts, and prettier to look at! That lack of seams leaves each sheet stronger and ups the wear- and tear-resistance overall for better long-term structural durability.

Available in a wide palette of pleasing solid shades such as Rosy Pink, Lavender and Taupe, they add a dash of opulence to your bedroom. These silk sheets are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning they’re free from potentially harmful chemicals. The material is breathable and moisture-wicking, keeping you cool and your bed dry while you sleep, no matter the temperature in your bedroom.

While the default price is of a twin-sheet set, you can mix and match and splurge on covers, sheets, pillowcases, and comforters to bring hotel-style luxury home. However, silk bedding can get slippery; customers recommend getting sheet straps to keep the linens from sliding. While you can wash the sheets on the gentlest machine cycle or hand wash them, Lilysilk recommends professional dry cleaning to keep them spiffy clean and shipshape for the long term.

Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set

What We Like
  • Ultra-soft bamboo viscose material

  • Ethical supply chain

  • Custom weave for durability

  • Wrinkle-free after washing

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

Light, elegant and fluffy, Cozy Earth’s bamboo sheets might not be made from true silk, but they’re a close second. Our tester loved how smooth and silky they feel to the touch, and even noted that they shine when the light hits them. Constructed with a breathable weave and a soft, sateen finish, they’re a comfortable and convenient silk alternative that you can toss in the washing machine without worry. The four-piece includes a fitted sheet that fits well on deep pocket mattresses up to 20”, and you won’t find yourself re-tucking them in after every night of sleep.

Made from fine-quality bamboo viscose, these sheets allow you to sleep cool without tossing and turning thanks to their temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking ability. Our tester said the sheets felt cool to the touch when climbing into bed, and they remained cool five minutes later. What’s more, the special weave prevents the sheets from pilling, making them more durable against daily wear and tear.

This silk-like sheet set gets better with time. According to our tester, the sheets remained nicely soft after washing, and there’s no need to worry about wrinkles. They come out of the laundry completely wrinkle-free, even when it comes to the pillow cases.

Best Sateen

Brielle Home 300 Thread Count Tencel Lyocell Sateen Sheet Set

Brielle 300 Thread Count Tencel Lyocell Sateen Sheet Set

What We Like
  • Silky, smooth texture

  • Lightweight and breathable

  • Sustainably sourced Tencel Lyocell fabric

  • Visible shine

What We Don't Like
  • Wrinkles easily

  • Can shrink slightly after washing

With a softness and silkiness you can feel right out of the package, this Brielle Home sheet set gives you a satin-like experience with entirely different fabric. These sateen sheets are made from 100 percent Tencel Lyocell, which mimics the feel of satin at a lower price. Cool to the touch, according to our lab tester, and highly breathable, this material seems high-end and generates a nice amount of shine.

These 300 thread count sheets are sustainably sourced, lightweight, breathable, and made with a mix of different hardwoods, including eucalyptus. When it comes to cooling and temperature control, our tester said that the set is a step above normal sheets, helping to keep you cooler than usual. However, if you’re a sleeper who runs hot, they might not keep you cool during the hottest months of the year.

When it comes to the construction of this sateen sheet set, the details make the difference. Our tester noted that the stitching was beautiful and that the little extras built in – like an extra flap to provide full pillow coverage – enhanced the quality. However, while these sheets are easy to care for and easy to get into place on your bed, they do tend to wrinkle easily. In testing, they remained quite wrinkled and did shrink a bit. The sheet set can develop further wrinkles as you sleep each night.

This lightweight sheet set is woven with 100 percent Tencel Lyocell fibers made from eucalyptus and other wood pulp sourced from sustainable forests. Each set boasts multiple sustainability certifications, including Oeko-Tex Standard 100, FSC and PEFC; Responsible Care; and USDA Certified Biobased Product, among others. Eucalypso’s sheets are specially treated with proprietary DreamWeave technology, which helps make the fabric extra silky, significantly more cooling, and ultra-breathable, details that are key in helping to regulate your body temperature at night. They’re about 70 percent more moisture-wicking than your typical cotton sheet set.

  • Machine washable

  • Inexpensive

  • Lightweight and comfortable

What We Don't Like
  • 100% polyester

  • Can bunch up and slide off the bed

They’re perfect for adding glitz to your bedroom without splurging on the real deal. These sheets are a practical choice if you have pets or children scampering around. Covering every possible shade in the spectrum, you can choose from over 20 glamorous colors that include the quirky Lime Green, Burnt Orange, and Light Wine Red.

Cheap and cheerful, the sturdy sheet set comes with a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and pillowcases and is easily machine washable. Best Pillowcase

Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

What We Like
  • Multiple colors and patterns

  • Machine washable

  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified

  • Gentle on hair and skin

What We Don't Like

This silk pillowcase is available in beautiful shades such as Ivory and Blush as well as a variety of patterns, including the dreamy Celestial and Wild Peach. Its smooth finish is designed to cut down on friction to make sleep less damaging to hair and skin, and it’s naturally cool to the touch.

What’s more, the cover is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, free of harmful substances in its fibers.  We like the nifty envelope closure that keeps your pillow snug and tight, instead of popping out of the case when you plop your head on it. Easy to clean, you can wash it on cold in your machine. However, the case is sold as a single piece, which means it can be a bit of an investment to purchase a pair for the snooze of your dreams.

Final Verdict

Beautifully constructed from a large, single swathe of Grade A mulberry silk, the Lilysilk 19 Momme Seamless Silk Sheets Set is our best overall pick, thanks to the sheets’ increased durability compared to their seamed counterparts. If you’re searching for quality sheets on a budget, consider My Silk Silk Seamless Flat Sheet – a well-priced option of 19 momme bedding made from Grade 6A mulberry silk.

What to Look for in Silk Sheets

Silk is a natural biodegradable fiber produced by silkworms that’s smooth, durable, and lustrous. It feels cool and soft on your skin, but at the same time, silk is expensive and requires high maintenance. If you’re sold on silk, these are the attributes experts suggest you consider.

Shopping for silk sheets is an investment for a great night of sleep. Yoselin Castro, Senior Interior Designer at Mackenzie Collier Interiors, says, “Always make sure the sheets are made out of 100 percent mulberry silk, as this is the highest quality of silk.” While shopping online, you can set the filter to only “silk” while researching a product to find high-quality picks like our choice for best overall, the Lilysilk 19 Momme Seamless Silk Sheets Set, or avoid sheets made with a combination of materials. You’ll want to make note of key certifications. “Make sure the silk sheets have been tested free of harmful chemicals; look out for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification,” Castro advises.

Beyond mulberry silk, there are other options. One of the most popular materials used for silk sheets is charmeuse silk. Charmeuse, which means “charmer” in French, is characterized by a weave with luster on one side and matte on the reverse. Gentle on your skin and hair, charmeuse silk is temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking.

Density and Weave

Another important factor to consider is the density of the silk and its quality, details that are measured by a unit called "momme." In a nutshell, the higher the momme, the heavier and denser the weave – and the better the quality. Midweight silk ranges between 20 and 28 momme, and anything above that is considered heavyweight and of superior quality. “I recommend handmade 22 momme Grade 6A mulberry silk if you can afford it,” says Nina Edwards Anker, architectural designer and director and founder of nea studio.

Silk Alternatives

The traditional way of making silk is to kill silkworms before they break through from their cocoons, to prevent the silk filament from being damaged. However, there are cruelty-free alternatives, such as peace silk or ahimsa silk, where moths emerge from the cocoons, and then the filaments are harvested. Another option is wild silk harvested from open forests. For vegans, alternatives to silk can come from plant-based sources, such as bamboo or eucalyptus. When it comes to selecting plant-based silk alternatives, Edwards Anker notes, “Bamboo sheets can feel brittle in comparison to cotton or silk. I would recommend 100% Tencel Lyocell.”

  • Are silk sheets worth the cost?

Unlike ephemeral spa treatments or vacations, silk sheets will stay in your home for years to come. Silk sheets are available across various price points. However, when it comes to price, “It depends on your household budget,” Edwards Anker says. “Since you spend, ideally, eight hours a night sleeping, heavenly feeling sheets that promote rest are worth it; they support healthy sleeping patterns.” If your budget allows, you can indulge in 100 percent mulberry silk bed sheets, or you can look for lower-density silks and alternative materials that have the same feel as silk, such as satin sheets. To make silk sheets more affordable, Edwards Anker suggests, “Try to buy sheets on sale, and buy only 100 percent pure silk.”

  • What are the benefits of silk sheets?

Silk sheets tick the right boxes when it comes to aesthetics and comfort. “Silk sheets are known for being extremely comfortable to sleep on especially during the warmer months, as silk is a natural temperature regulator,” Castro says. Even silk alternative sheets, like our recommended bamboo alternative Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set, can be especially cool and breathable on warm nights. Hypoallergenic and non-irritating, silk is also gentle on your hair and scalp and beneficial for acne-prone skin. “It helps prevent wrinkles, because it’s friction-free. Silk also naturally hydrates your hair while you sleep,” Edwards Anker says.

  • Will silk sheets hold up over time?

Silk, a fiber made of natural protein, is considered one of the strongest natural fibers, so it’s highly durable. However, silk becomes very pliable when wet and needs to be washed carefully to extend its lifespan. Silk sheets can be machine washed (preferably in a mesh bag) or hand washed. “Wash new sheets before using them, and always wash them separately or with silk pieces in cold water only,” Castro recommends. “Wash with a mild detergent that will protect the quality of silk, and don’t use bleach, as it will cause the sheets to yellow.” If you’re hand washing silk sheets, avoid twisting or wringing them; instead, gently squeeze the water out. Dry by hanging inside, away from direct sunlight. Fold or roll them for storing.
