best smart lamps

The Spruce / Lecia Landis

Smart lamps are a form of indoor lighting that work much like standard lamps, but with the ability to connect to the internet and your mobile devices for added levels of control, convenience, and automation.

In our search for the best smart lamps, we consulted with Marlon Buchanan, a smart home expert who wrote "The Smart Home Manual" and founded HomeTechHacker.com. "Smart lamps let you customize the lighting in your rooms to your preferences," Buchanan told The Spruce. "They offer the unique benefits of portability and flexible placement in a room. For example, you can put smart lamps on a counter, a nightstand, a coffee table, or even a fireplace mantel."

We looked at a number of options—considering different uses, lighting control options, smart home integrations, and features—and have other recommendations that may fit your home even better.

Here are the best smart lamps for your home.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall

Philips Hue Iris

Philips Hue Iris

Amazon

What We Like
  • Great colors and brightness

  • Distinct design

  • Bluetooth control option

What We Don't Like
  • Hue Bridge needed for extra features

Starting with its eye-catching clear, globular design, the Philips Hue Iris makes it easy to see that it's not your typical living room lamp. The integrated LED light, aimed toward the wall or ceiling, can set a custom mood with a vibrant palette of 16 million colors, while also being able to shine a temperature-tunable white light bright enough for reading and everyday activities.

You can connect to the Iris through Bluetooth or Zigbee wireless for precise mobile app control, or issue voice commands with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant by way of a corresponding smart speaker or other compatible device. However, the Iris comes at a higher cost than most similar alternatives, and you'll need to pay for a separate Hue Bridge to control the lamp via Wi-Fi and use its full set of features.

According to Buchanan, connecting to the hub and additional smart lighting in the Hue line can be worthwhile for smart home aficionados. "I like the Philips Hue Iris because it can easily integrate with Philips' other lights to make impressive displays," says Buchanan. "Like other Philips Hue smart lighting products, the quality and brightness of the lights are top notch."

Meross Smart Table Lamp MSL450HK

Meross Smart Table Lamp MSL450HK

Amazon

What We Like
  • Tunable white and multicolor lights

  • App, voice, or touch controls

  • HomeKit compatibility

What We Don't Like
  • Not overly bright

  • Still pricier than standard lamps

The versatile MSL450HK Smart Table Lamp from Meross lets you sample the biggest benefits of smart lighting without spending extra on luxury features or a required hub. Its simple cylindrical shape makes it great for the bedside and nearly any tabletop, and you can operate it with touch buttons on the top if you don't feel like using smart controls.

You can certainly find brighter non-smart lamps for lower prices, but you'd miss out on the fine-tuning this smart LED lamp offers: dimmable brightness from 1 to 100 percent, white light temperature tunable between 2000 Kelvin to 5700 Kelvin, and 16 million adjustable colors—in addition to the timer, scheduling, and sunrise/sunset settings.

Besides connecting to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, Meross smart lights also feature compatibility with Apple's HomeKit smart platform, allowing you to integrate with Siri, iPhones, and other Apple devices when most other competitors do not. In addition to the MSL450HK model, Meross also offers similar variants: the taller, more expensive MSL430HK and the shorter, less expensive MSL420HK.

Best for Kids

Amazon Echo Glow

Echo Glow - Multicolor smart lamp for kids, a Certified for Humans Device – Requires compatible Alexa device

Amazon

What We Like
  • Clever use of colors

  • Simple to install and use

  • Affordable price

What We Don't Like
  • Not very bright

  • Separate Alexa device needed for voice commands

Smart lamps can make advanced lighting effects simple and user-friendly enough for kids, and that's what Amazon emphasizes with its Echo Glow. The device serves well as a night light with colorful, entertaining effects, accompanied by timers to reinforce bedtime and wake-up routines, including a crowd-pleasing Rainbow Timer.

Kids can control the lamp with their voices, but you'll need a different Alexa-enabled device to take advantage of this feature. Even with Echo in its name and a ball shape similar to the latest Echo Dot, the Echo Glow does not include a built-in speaker or microphone. And, as an Amazon product, Alexa is your only virtual assistant option, but you'll find no shortage of Alexa-supported smart home gadgets to sync with the Echo Glow.

The device's limited brightness makes it truly more suited to "glow" rather than light up a room, but, as Buchanan points out, it's affordable enough to serve as a nice bedroom lamp for adults as well as kids. "The Amazon Echo Glow is a great budget option for rooms that don't rely on it for full lighting, and it works perfectly in the Alexa ecosystem."

Best Floor

Govee Lyra RGBICWW Corner Floor Lamp

Govee Lyra RGBICWW Corner Floor Lamp

Lowe's

What We Like
  • Can produce multiple colors at once

  • Compelling futuristic design

  • Bluetooth control option

What We Don't Like
  • Futuristic design unlikely to match many decors

A tall, free-standing lamp in the corner of the room is a staple in many homes, but the Govee Lyra is a very different type of floor lamp. After assembling its various pieces, the Lyra looks at first like an odd aluminum pole sticking up out of a base. Connect to it through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and turn on the light, though, and you see how much the glowing stick stands out. It delivers a bright, fully dimmable light with adjustable white color temperature, plus powerful color options that can set any mood or get the party started.

By adding an independent control (IC) chip to its RGB LED lights, the Lyra can shine different colors at the same time from its various segments, opening up a wide selection of preset effects and possibilities for customized patterns. It also includes a built-in microphone that can listen to your music and sync its lights to the beat.

While the Govee Lyra is excellent for entertaining, it may not be worth the extra cost if you're not interested in the color-control capabilities. The design could also be a sticking point for some who prefer more traditionally aesthetic models.

Best Bedside

Philips SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light

Philips SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light HF3670

Amazon

What We Like
  • Custom sunrise/sunset light and sound routines

  • Advanced sleep app and sensors

  • Built-in radio and USB charger

What We Don't Like
  • Quite expensive for a lamp or alarm clock

  • No Bluetooth or voice control

Separate from the Philips Hue line of smart lighting, Philips SmartSleep products focus on improving your rest and wake-up routines, with the Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light as the brand's premium smart lamp offering.

This all-in-one bedside gadget combines an alarm clock with a uniquely styled LED light that simulates a gentle sunrise or sunset, accompanied by soothing natural sounds—completely customizable to your preferences. It also has a USB charging port, a built-in FM radio, and an auxiliary port for piping in your own music, though there's no Bluetooth or voice commands like a true smart speaker.

The most high-end sleep features come via sensors that monitor the surrounding temperature, humidity, light, and noise levels, and you can track that data through the SleepMapper app to help improve your sleep environment. These extras come at a pretty steep cost, so if a more basic sunrise alarm clock will meet your needs, you can save with a simpler device. The Philips SmartSleep Wake Up Light, for example, is a model we've tested from the same product line that features a similar core light and alarm functionality for about half the price.

Best Portability

Casper Glow Light

4.6
Casper Glow Light

Bed Bath & Beyond

What We Like
  • Custom sleep/wake lighting

  • Twist and touch control options

  • Easily sync multiple units

What We Don't Like
  • No voice controls or other integrations

  • No sound options

The Glow Light, created by the sleep product and mattress company Casper, has a primary purpose of encouraging better rest, using a relaxing warm light to help you drift off to sleep. Then, in the morning, it wakes you with a gentle, alarm-free glow. You can fine-tune the timing and light settings for these routines through the mobile app.

Beyond the sleep benefits, the device also includes a number of design touches that are both clever and functional. Unlike most smart lamps that plug into the wall, the Glow runs on a rechargeable battery, so you can pick it up off its wireless charging base and walk around the house with it. Flipping the lamp over turns it on, or you can push buttons on either end. Twisting it one way makes the light brighter while the other dims it, and a gentle wiggle activates a soft night light.

These are cool tactile options, but for those who like touch-free controls, it would've been nice if the device supported voice commands or other smart platform compatibility as well. You can, however, easily sync multiple Glow units to work in tandem with each other.

Best Design

Sharper Image Bonsai Bluetooth Speaker Lamp

Sharper Image Bonsai Bluetooth Speaker Lamp

Sharper Image

What We Like
  • Touch controls for music playback

  • Wireless charger built in

What We Don't Like
  • Fairly dim light

  • No app or voice controls

Sharper Image's Bonsai Bluetooth Speaker Lamp has a unique design that gives off peaceful vibes and plenty of appeal. The lamp takes the shape of a bonsai tree with the lighted portion as its leaves, held up by a silver stand styled like a trunk and branches. The LED light is dimmable, though it's not bright enough to be much more than an accent light, and it can't be operated with a virtual assistant or a mobile app.

For the functional side of its design, the lamp serves as a Bluetooth speaker that can pair wirelessly with an audio source, with smooth touch-sensitive playback controls built into the lamp's base.

The base also delivers Qi wireless charging to supported devices, including most modern smartphones, so you can rest your phone down on the base under the shade of the "tree" to power it up while it plays your music.

Best Splurge

Dyson Lightcycle Desk Task Light

Dyson Lightcycle Desk Task Light

Dyson

What We Like
  • High-quality, long-lasting LED

  • Light adjusts to your exact environment

  • Smooth positioning mechanisms

What We Don't Like
  • Design not for everyone

  • No Wi-Fi or voice controls

The advanced science and engineering involved in the Lightcycle task light by Dyson push far beyond any typical desk lamp, smart or otherwise. Its uniquely industrial, linear aesthetic won't suit all preferences or home decor styles, just like many features won't be necessary for most users. The crossbar construction and rotating base let you place the light precisely where you want with just a light touch.

In addition to a built-in USB-C port, this lamp has a few physical buttons to control brightness and color temperature and turn it on/off, but detailed controls come through the Dyson app when paired over Bluetooth. Options for Wi-Fi connectivity and voice commands would have added more convenience, but its focus stays on lighting your work or task at hand.

The light itself is of the highest quality, with heat management to help the LED hold up for an estimated 60 years. It uses data from sensors and your input to constantly tweak the brightness and color temperature based on your age, work and sleep schedule, surrounding light, and the natural daylight at your location at every point in the day. The adjustments aim to help avoid eye strain and improve your sleep by reducing blue light at the end of the day.

Best Bulb

Wyze Bulb Color

4.7
Wyze Bulb Color

Amazon

What We Like
  • Brighter than most smart lamps

  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and voice controls

  • More affordable than a full smart lamp

What We Don't Like
  • Limited color effects

  • Lamp has to stay on to access smart features

If you prefer to use your existing regular lamps and add connected features through a smart bulb, the Wyze Bulb Color is an excellent, versatile option that can partner nicely with just about any type of lamp in any room of the house. One reason is its maximum brightness of 1100 lumens, which is brighter than many other smart bulbs and can light a room better than a mood-focused lamp.

This smart bulb can also drop to a very dim 30 lumens and adjust between a wide range of color temperatures. The multicolor options include several preset scenes, though not the same color-changing effects and animations some smart lamps feature.

The Wyze Bulb Color also lets you take advantage of the scheduling and integration features that often come easier with smart bulbs, such as grouping multiple bulbs, sleep or vacation modes, and compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. You can control this bulb with the app through Bluetooth when nearby or over Wi-Fi if you're anywhere else in the world. Since you only control the bulb, though, you're out of luck if someone turns the lamp or its light switch off.

Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.5 x 5 inches | Power Source: Power cord | Brightness: 1100 lumens | Hub Required: No | Compatibility: Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT | Dimmable: Yes

Final Verdict

With its impressive brightness, color quality, and design, the Philips Hue Iris is our top overall pick for most bedroom and living room spaces, though it requires additional investment in the Hue Bridge to make the most of its capabilities. The Amazon Echo Glow is a more simple, affordable option with color and timer features that make it ideal for kids, but still a worthwhile choice for any home in need of a basic smart lamp.

What to Look for in Smart Lamps

Smart Features

Smart lamps differentiate themselves from regular lamps through their use of technology to provide extra control, customization, scheduling, and more. They might achieve this using a Bluetooth connection, your home Wi-Fi network, or voice commands from Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple's Siri.

Potential integration with a broader smart home setup is also important to consider, as smart home expert Marlon Buchanan points out. "Good options to look for are whether or not the lamp needs a hub for full functionality, because this may add to your cost and setup complexity. You may also be interested in whether or not the light can function as part of a larger ecosystem of lights, which can help create some very impressive light scenes."

Lighting Options

Lighting control is a core function of smart lamps, and most allow you to at least adjust the brightness through dimming. Many smart lamps have limited maximum brightness, though, serving more for ambiance and mood lighting than to fully light a room. Some let you change the light's color temperature between warm or cool light, and others offer full color-changing control and effects. The ideal lighting features will depend on where you plan to place the lamp and how you will use it.

"A bedroom is a wonderful place for a smart lamp because you can program the light to dim and brighten with stages of your day," Buchanan says. "Have it slowly dim and turn off at night, and program it to slowly brighten when it is time to wake up. A family or entertainment room can be a great place, too, as you can set the mood with various colors and effects to match what's going on in the room."

Extra Features

Smart lamps often include extra features depending on their primary intended usage, particularly if they are bedside lamps. Since these devices become part of your sleep and wake-up process, some will include a USB port to plug in your gadgets at night and possibly a speaker to play the radio or alarm sounds to wake you up in the morning.

FAQ
  • What is a smart lamp?

A smart lamp is a device that provides light for part of your room, usually resting on a tabletop, bedside table, or floor, while offering advanced functionality through a mobile app or voice commands through a separate smart speaker. In contrast to permanent light fixtures that install into your wall or ceiling, smart lamps can typically move around to different places in your home as long as you can plug them in. They also tend to utilize built-in LEDs rather than a removable, replaceable bulb.

  • What’s the advantage of a smart lamp over a smart bulb?

Installing a smart light bulb into a normal lamp is a common way to experience smart lighting, but smart lamps can provide various benefits by combining the bulb and lamp element into a single device.

"One advantage of smart lamps over smart bulbs is that you don't have to worry about someone disabling the light using a light switch or the lamp's power toggle switch," Buchanan notes. "When this happens, you can't control your smart bulb with a voice assistant or an app until you turn the lamp or light switch back on. Smart lamps are always connected and controllable remotely. Another advantage is that many smart lamps can be powered via USB, increasing your options for placement and making them portable."

  • Can smart bulbs work in any lamp?

Smart bulbs can turn many regular lamps essentially into smart lamps, but not all regular lamps can work for this purpose, particularly if they already include specialized functionality and/or design. "Lamps that are 3-way or dimming generally won't work well with a smart bulb," Buchanan warns. "Also, some lamps are too small or oddly shaped for most smart bulbs."

  • How can I control multiple smart lamps?

Smart lamps often function on their own rather than connecting directly to one another, but you can control multiple lamps if you integrate them into a certain hub or smart platform. Philips Hue lamps, for example, are designed to work seamlessly with each other and any Philips Hue lights if you connect them with a Hue Bridge. Having multiple lamps synced to a virtual assistant like Alexa can also let you set routines to control them all together.
