Best Vinyl Mats

The Spruce / Lecia Landis

Low maintenance and easy to clean, vinyl is the ideal material for flat-woven rugs and mats in high-traffic areas, moisture-prone zones, and homes with pets. "Although [vinyl mats] were initially used in commercial settings, we are starting to see them more in residential spaces," adds Fernanda Baeza, interior designer at Floor Factors. "They are extremely durable and waterproof."

To help narrow down your options, we researched low-maintenance designs for every room, style, and budget. Our top pick is the Chilewich Basketweave Floor Mat, a durable indoor-outdoor option available in seven sizes and eight neutral hues.

Best Overall

Chilewich Basketweave Vinyl Floor Mat

What We Like
  • Soft, cushy feel

  • Resists stains and mildew

  • Many sizes/colors

What We Don't Like
  • Larger sizes are pricey

Chilewich is a mainstay in the world of vinyl floor-covering products—and out of all their offerings, our favorite is the Basketweave Floor Mat. Made with the brand's signature TerraStrand material, the vinyl yarns are woven with "renewable vegetable content" for softness, then bonded to a non-slip latex backing.

The result? A durable, flexible surface with an excellent grip that also feels nice underfoot. According to Chilewich, it's also resistant to stains, bacteria, and mildew. Thanks to the latex component, you won't need to place a rug pad underneath.

This mat comes in seven sizes, ranging from a small doormat to a narrow runner or a 6 x 9-foot area rug. You can choose from nine neutral hues, including Bark (a light brown) and Latte (a versatile beige). It's easy to care for, too: just vacuum the mat regularly and wipe it clean as needed.

Price at time of publish: $140 - $1,150

The rug is versatile enough to be placed in virtually any room of your home, including covered outdoor areas—no rug pad needed. Just bear in mind it may fade in direct sunlight, and be sure to roll the mat for storage, as folding can cause permanent creasing.

What We Like
  • Thick and cushy

  • Water-repellent

  • Reduces foot/leg fatigue

What We Don't Like

What's more, a non-skid rubber backing helps you stay steady while keeping it in place.

Designed to keep you comfortable on your feet for long periods, this anti-fatigue mat is also a good choice for standing desks, kitchens, and workbenches. But we should note it only comes in two small sizes, so it's not suitable for larger spaces.

This mat is pet-friendly, stain-resistant, and remarkably low maintenance. You can vacuum up dried debris and wipe it down as needed. We wish it came in more than two colors, but both options are plenty versatile without sacrificing character.

What We Like
  • Low-profile design

  • High-traction surface

  • Water-resistant

What We Don't Like
  • Adhesive installation

  • Carpet tape sold separately

For home gyms, we recommend Rubber-Cal Coin Grip. It comes in 4-foot-wide rolls and 18 lengths, so you can buy exactly how much you need to cover your floor. The low-profile PVC material is just 2 millimeters thick, and the high-traction coin pattern provides enhanced slip resistance.

This product is meant to be applied with double-sided carpet tape or another heavy-duty adhesive, which you'll have to buy separately. You can also use urethane-based glue for permanent installation. Either way, the process will take some time and focus. If you're not up for it, consider hiring a professional.

The larger ones are priced pretty steep but not necessarily above average for high-quality rugs of that size.

This floor mat features a 100 percent vinyl surface and a non-slip latex backing, so you can forgo a rug pad. The floral prints have a distinctly rich flair while complementing nearly any decor style. Just a heads up, these rugs are made to order, so they take up to four weeks to ship out.

This mold-resistant piece has an anti-slip backing and can be placed indoors or outside without a rug pad underneath. It comes in seven colors and five sizes, but there aren't any rug-size options—only mats.

Final Verdict

What to Look for in a Vinyl Rug or Floor Mat

Placement

"Vinyl rugs are great for high-traffic areas," says Fernanda Baeza, interior designer at Floor Factors, explaining that they were originally used in commercial spaces but have recently become popular for home use. When browsing options, think about where you plan to place the mat.

This type of floor covering is suitable for just about any room in a home. But since sizes are sometimes limited, you'll want to make sure the design is available in the proper dimensions for the space you have in mind. And if you place it outside, a covered area is ideal for preventing sun fading.

Care

According to Baeza, vinyl floor mats and rugs are very easy to clean. Many designs can be vacuumed regularly, shaken out periodically, and hosed off or wiped down as needed.

"Most of the time, you can just remove surface dust with either a dry cloth or a dry mop and finish by spot-cleaning the tougher stains with a damp rag," says Baeza. "If you have a stubborn stain, you can always use a carpet spot-cleaner or dish soap."

Style

Lastly, consider what style you want for your vinyl floor mat or area rug. While most options feature a flat weave, there are nearly unlimited colors, prints, and patterns available. "Many have simple woven textures in a variety of colors, while others provide geometric and organic shapes for a fun and wild look," says Baeza.

FAQ
  • Are vinyl rugs and floor mats waterproof?

Vinyl rugs and floor mats are generally very water-resistant, if not 100 percent waterproof. This means they help protect floors from moisture damage, resist staining in the event of liquid spills, and can be mopped clean or even hosed off.

  • Can you place furniture on a vinyl area rug?

You can place furniture on vinyl rugs. Since they're flatter than most area rugs, you won't have to worry about crushing the pile. Having said that, many designs are only available in mat-size dimensions, so the most important thing is finding one large enough to fit underneath the front two legs of each piece of furniture (if not all four). See our guide on how to select the right size area rug for more insight

  • Can vinyl floor mats and rugs be used outside?

It depends. Since vinyl floor mats and rugs are water-resistant (or entirely waterproof), you usually won't have to worry about moisture damage from wet weather. Some brands also boast resistance to mold and mildew.

However, the main concern is not water damage but rather sun fading. Since the printed surfaces may dull over time in direct sunlight, consider placing yours on a covered porch or patio. Also, we recommend double-checking the product description first to ensure the mat is suitable for outdoor use.
