Our favorite is Birch Lane's modern-meets-vintage Keener Light (view at Birch Lane), thanks to its simple design and flexible properties that allow it to be used in living rooms and bathrooms alike. For something more eco-friendly and modern, we also love the slim and sleek energy-saving Kuzco Vega Sconce (view at Amazon). But if you're on a budget, the Eglo Troy Wall Sconce is an excellent choice (view at Amazon) at under $30.
What to Look for in a Wall Sconce
Installation
When buying a sconce, the first thing you'll want to consider is how it'll be installed. Many designs are meant to be hardwired, meaning they're mounted to the wall and connected to electrical circuits hidden behind the wall (usually by a professional electrician).
You'll also find plug-in sconces, which plug into a standard wall outlet with a power cord and plug. Plug-in fixtures are easier to install, but you'll have to be OK with the visible cord on your wall.
Bulb Type and Wattage
You should also pay attention to the bulb, whether it's a built-in LED or a screw-in incandescent. Most wall sconces indicate the bulb type they're compatible with, which you'll often have to buy separately.
Long-lasting LEDs need to be replaced much less frequently than their incandescent counterparts and are usually low-wattage. Low-wattage bulbs use minimal power, so they're an energy-efficient choice.
Design
With this in mind, look for a sconce that nods to your existing decor theme, whether it's industrial, boho, minimalist, or contemporary. When in doubt, choose a simple design with a base in the same finish as your doorknobs, faucets, towel hooks, and other metal fixtures.
-
How do you install a wall sconce?
Wall sconces call for wall-mounted installation. If you're up for it, you can likely do it yourself with a screwdriver. But unless you're a trained electrician, you'll probably want to hire a professional if your fixture needs to be hardwired. The DIY route can be a safety hazard, plus a pro will ensure it's done correctly the first time around.
For a simpler assembly, you'll want to opt for a plug-in wall sconce like the Article Leap Black Sconce over a hardwired wall sconce.
-
Where should you place a wall sconce?
"Bathrooms and bedrooms are some of the most common places to use sconces," says interior designer Ahmad AbouZanat of Project AZ. "They're also great in hallways or entryway foyers."
Lots of folks opt for matching wall sconces on either side of the bed. In addition to freeing up space on the nightstands, hardwired fixtures help you minimize visible cords. "In a more traditional setting, sconces can be used in dining rooms over the buffet or credenza," AbouZanat adds.
If you're looking to install a wall sconce outdoors, you'll want to make sure it can withstand the weather and is suitable for wet locations, like the RBW Dimple Wall Flush Mount.
-
How much light should a sconce give off?
According to AbouZanat, this depends on the room's existing light fixtures and what mood you're going for. "If you want subtle light that's not too bright, go with a decorative, plain fabric or paper shade," he says. "If your space is already illuminated and you want to add a second layer of accent lighting for a specific ambiance or mood, there are plenty of sconces that provide light onto the wall only."
Wall sconces are typically not used as a primary light source in a room. However, AbouZanat says that if you need a little more illumination, look for something with a clear glass shade that filters minimal light.
