Ruggable is one of the top brands offering washer-friendly floor coverings, and the Kamran Coral Rug is one of their top-selling patterns. Ruggable rugs have a unique two-piece system: You get the non-skid rug pad, which serves as a base, as well as the patterned rug cover that can be removed and washed in any standard-sized washing machine. Once it’s clean, you can simply reattach it to the pad!

This particular style from Ruggable has a Persian-inspired design with a large inner medallion and ornate border around the edges. The rug has a purposefully distressed appearance, and its gray and rust color scheme will lend subtle warmth to any space. What to Look for When Buying Washable Rugs

Washable rugs are convenient, but even washing in cold water and tumbling dry on a low setting can take its toll on a rug, making it look washed out from too much washing. Most washable rugs are made from synthetic materials such as polyester which make them more durable to washing machines but also less sustainable. Washable rugs in natural materials such as wool or cotton are more eco-friendly but cost more.

Machine washable rugs are often on the thinner side, meaning they don’t hold up as long. Look for reversible rugs (or at least ones that can be laid on either side, even if they aren't marketed as reversible) that can be turned over regularly or as seasons change to spread out the wear and tear. This will ensure that your washable rug lasts as long as possible.

Washable rugs come in every color of the rainbow. But if you are planning to use your washable rug in a high traffic area that will require frequent washing, consider either a pale neutral toned rug or a patterned rug with a distressed design that won’t highlight extra fading or wear. Brightly colored rugs are harder to maintain but you can help them along by washing in cold water and air drying them whenever possible.

  • Are bathroom rugs machine washable?

Most rugs that are manufactured specifically for the bathroom are washable and dryer safe. Wash in cold water to prevent fading. Keep in mind that rugs might shrink slightly in the dryer the first time you wash them, and it’s best to air dry them whenever possible to avoid shrinkage and keep colors vibrant. Always check care instructions before investing in a rug for the bathroom, and resist the urge to overwash rugs. Read our guide to washing bathroom rugs.

  • Can a 5x7 rug fit in the washing machine?

This will depend on the size of your washing machine. A large family-sized washing machine might easily hold a 5x7-foot rug, but a more compact apartment-sized washing machine might not. Laundromats usually feature industrial-sized washing machines that can accommodate larger items like washable rugs.

  • Can you put a shaggy rug in a washing machine?

Technically, yes, but shaggy rugs don’t always hold up well in the washing machine. To keep your shaggy rug clean, spot clean any spills as soon as possible, and be sure to vacuum it regularly on a high setting to suck up dirt and keep it looking its shaggy best. You can also sprinkle a light-colored shaggy rug with non-aerosol dry shampoo and use a brush attachment to fluff it up. Shaggy rugs also benefit from being taken outside for a good hard shake or beaten with a wooden stick to release trapped dust and dirt. As always, be sure to check the label on your rug for specific care instructions. Learn more by reading our guide to cleaning shag rugs.
