Put a new twist on the classic bourbon Manhattan with this delicious and easy Big Apple Manhattan recipe. It is simple, sweet, sour, and a whole lot of fun. If you like your cocktails on the sweeter side, the Big Apple Manhattan is the one for you.

The recipe was created at the Gallery Bar in  Los Angeles' Millenium Biltmore Hotel as part of a cocktail menu that featured a great variety of Manhattan recipes.

The Big Apple Manhattan features the nice spice and cinnamon notes of Wild Turkey Bourbon against the sweet and sour of amaretto and apple liqueurs. When paired with cranberry juice, the drink comes together in perfect harmony and is a nice balance of flavor without that stuffiness that can happen so often in 'up' drinks.

This is a cocktail that is easy to make at home and you could even make this by the pitcher for entertaining large groups of friends.

Ingredients:

Preparation:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with a cherry.

More Tips for Making a Great Big Apple Manhattan

While Wild Turkey is the whiskey recommended in the recipe, there are many other brands that will do just as well in this cocktail.

Try it with your personal favorite. Also, give Wild Turkey 101 or another high-proof bourbon like Knob Creek a try because the higher alcohol content gives whiskey more flavor, which is exactly what a flavor-packed cocktail like this needs.

Amaretto Di Saronno is one of the best brands of amaretto you will find and it is a perfect option for this drink.

Don't feel bad for using your favorite amaretto, though. If you like it, mix it!

Apple Pucker is that notorious green liqueur that packs a very sour punch. It is not the only sour apple liqueur, though and you may be surprised that there are some great options out there. Explore your liquor store next time and see what is available locally. Deauville, Bols, and Gabriel Boudier are some fantastic options.

How Strong is the Big Apple Manhattan?

Let's assume that we choose Wild Turkey 101 for this cocktail and that we have taken all other brand recommendations to heart. In this case, this is a relatively strong cocktail, weighing in at right around 25% ABV (50 proof).
