Learn How to Sew Bird's Nest Quilt Blocks

Each Bird's Nest quilt block is assembled with quite a few pieces of fabric, but the design isn't difficult to sew.

    • The instructions and graphics illustrate how to make the variation on the left, with dark, on-point squares moving vertically and horizontally through the center of the quilt block.
    • To make the quilt block on the right, which contains the same fabrics, but used in different positions, substitute colors as shown.

The Bird's Nest quilt pattern on page 4 is sewn with both...MORE block layouts and finishes at about 50" x 70". Yardages are included.

    Finished Quilt Block Size: 10" x 10"

Cutting for ONE Bird's Nest Quilt Block (Left Illustration)

The patchwork of the squares and triangles used in the quilt block's mid-point bars are technically just a tiny bit smaller than the sizes listed below, but their "textbook sizes" aren't rotary cuttable. We've stepped them up to the next largest easy-to-cut size, in the same way, we do for the odd sizes of setting and corner triangles used in on-point quilts.

Always begin any pattern by cutting only enough fabric for a sample block.

    Light beige:

    • (3) 4" x 4" squares, each cut in half twice diagonally, for side triangles used in mid-point bar units
    • (6) 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally, for corner triangles used at the ends of mid-point bar units
    • (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares, for half square triangle units, for half square triangle units used in block corners; draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner on the reverse side of each

    Deepest red/burgundy:

    • (9) 2" x 2" squares, for squares used in mid-point bar units
    • (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares, for half square triangle units
    • (4) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally, for individual half square triangles sewn next to floral print

    Multicolor floral print:

    • (2) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally, for half square triangle units sewn next to mid-point bar units

    Begin Assembling Patchwork

Make the patchwork mid-point bars first.

    1. Gather the 2" x 2" red squares and the beige triangles cut to sew alongside them.
    2. Arrange five squares, eight larger triangles, and four smaller triangles as shown in the top illustration. Sew each square to its partners as shown. Press seam allowances towards the beige triangles. Add the final two corner triangles and press.
    3. Join the angled segments and press.
    4. Referring to the bottom illustration, arrange two red squares...MORE with their beige triangle components as shown. Sew components together into the diagonal units. Press seam allowances towards the beige triangles. Join the angled segments and press. Repeat to make another identical bar unit. Add the remaining corner squares and press.

    Finish Sewing the Quilt Block

    1. Gather the two 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" red squares and the beige squares of the same size (with a diagonal line marked on the back). Use the quick pieced half square triangle method to sew contrasting squares together, creating four half square triangle units that measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2".
    2. Refer to the top diagram. Arrange two red half square triangles cut from 2-7/8" squares alongside a red/beige half square triangle unit as shown. Attach the triangles,...MORE stopping to press the seam allowance towards the triangle after each addition.
    3. Sew a multicolor print triangle to the right of the patchwork unit as shown.
    4. Repeat, making four identical units to use in the quilt block's corners.
    5. Refer to the bottom diagram. Sew a short pieced bar unit between two corner units as illustrated. Press seam allowances towards the block corners. Repeat to make another identical unit.
    6. Sew the vertical bar unit between the two step 5 units as shown, matching all edges and easing to fit if necessary.
    7. Make additional Bird's Nest quilt blocks as needed.
