Raspberry Walnut Torte
Raspberry Walnut Torte. Linda Larsen

January is birthday month in our house. And I always make a cake. That's not the way it was growing up, though! My mom always bought our cakes from the local bakery. I'm not sure why - she is a fabulous baker. My husband's mom made him Chocolate Macaroon Cake, so he always requests that, or Raspberry Walnut Torte.

What makes a birthday cake special? I think it's simply that someone made (or bought) a cake just for you!

A birthday cake can be anything, from the most fabulous multi-layered beauty to a simple sheet cake decorated with candles and sugar flowers.

Enjoy these fabulous cakes.
