One of the most meaningful ways to celebrate Black History Month is through solidarity and support of Black-owned or founded brands. That’s why we love Target’s latest initiative to elevate and promote the numerous Black-owned brands on offer at the popular retailer. Target is making it even easier to invest in these brands, creating more opportunities for their founders and helping their businesses grow and thrive.
We recently connected with Marissa Kearney, founder of TargetWhileBlack and RetailWhileBlack, who talked us through some of her favorite products from Target right now. Together, we curated a list of some great home products you need to grab this February.
And one pro tip from Kearney? “All Target stores are not created equal, and products vary from store to store—sometimes you may not have a product near you, but a little trick is to order it anyway,” Kearney says. “Target is watching who buys what and from where. This also helps the brand when it is time for them to scale.”
Schentell Nunn Metal Watering Can in Black
Designed by Schentell Nunn of the LA-based floral design studio Offerings, this metal water can is structural and incredibly chic. Use it as intended, or fill it with flowers, making it a vase worthy of one of Nunn's own stunning arrangements.
Justina Blakeney Hamsa Quilt Set Orange
Warm colors are trending in 2023, and cozy bedding is always in style. We love the embroidered Hamsa print on this quilt and pillow sham set, which is meant to serve as protection from evil.
Schentell Nunn Medium Ribbed Sculptural Glass Vase
We are a sucker for beautiful plant products here at The Spruce, and this sculptural green vase is no exception. Just think how professional your Trader Joe's bouquet will look placed in here—Schentell really is the expert in floral design.
Freres Branchiaux Vanilla Spice Candle
There’s a lot to love about the Freres Branchiaux line of candles. Thanks to their proprietary soy wax blend, they’re proudly vegan and lead-free, with a maximum burn time of over 40 hours for the larger jars. Most importantly, they smell incredible.
Jungalow Aisha Shower Curtain Green
Now is the perfect time for a small-space refresh, and nothing changes the feel of a bathroom like swapping in a new shower curtain. This green print is totally calming, perfect for enhancing your daily self-care routine.
All Across Africa Small Basket Brown
This basket is all about versatility: use it to organize your bathroom cabinets or house the newest addition to your houseplant collection. It's neutral and adaptable to any space in your home.
Be Rooted Line Art Journal
Along with various home goods, Be Rooted also has a line of great journals. And Kearny loves it, too—"The soft touch of each journal makes me feel like I have my life together and can finally live Black Girl Luxury,” she says.
Rayo & Honey 'The World Is Yours' Oval Mirror
Who doesn’t need a daily reminder to set out and conquer the world? To be honest, it was a nearly impossible decision to pick between this hanging oval mirror and this other Arch Mirror option from Rayo & Honey that says, ‘All Along You’ve Been Blooming.’
Be Rooted 'Feed Your Soul' Decorative Square Throw Pillow
“Be Rooted launched so many new products over the last year—and with each launch, I have to buy what's new,” Kearney says when asked about her favorite brands at the moment. Be Rooted is all about celebrating joy and positivity, and this Feed Your Soul decorative pillow does exactly that.
Be Rooted Wood Keepsake Box
“My favorite Black-owned brands at Target are colorful and classic,” Kearney says, and that’s exactly why we love this decorative Be Rooted box—which has definite on-trend Art Deco vibes.
Bellen's 'More Than Peach' Creativity Pack
Whether you’re shopping for a little one or you enjoy some mindfulness coloring of your own, Bellen’s More Than Peach collection is a must-have. With a wide array of colors that you won’t find in other crayon box collections, Bellen Woodard is all about inclusion.
“Bellen's More than Peach product is so inspiring," Kearney says. “She is only 12 and is making a difference in the world. Her products are a reminder that no matter how young or old you are, you can make a difference.”
