February is Black History Month, a month-long celebration that calls for reflection on Black History and celebration of how far the community has come. Often, there is a call to action for greater support and unity in the Black community, and what better way to celebrate than to support Black-owned businesses both big and small?
While 'Buying Black' should be a year-round effort, it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed when you don’t know where to start—that’s where we come in. If you want to be more intentional this year about supporting Black-owned businesses, here are 16 Black-owned businesses that are sure to bring some flair to your home.

Reflektion Design
What started as a 2006 Fulbright Scholar trip to Ghana eventually turned into the 2013 launch of a Black-owned business. Anitra, the founder of Reflektion Design, fell in love with Ghanaian culture and the art of creating African textiles while on her trip and was inspired to create the brand from this love. Anitra designs and sources African decor with culturally inspired people who love unique, colorful pieces in mind.
Don't Sleep Interiors

Kori Miller, visual designer and creator of Don't Sleep Interiors, is the mind behind the brand. Don't Sleep Interiors started from a desire to combine interior design and culture from the African diaspora with social and political consciousness. The goal of the brand is to evoke meaningful conversations, promote free thinking and encourage the exploration of our collective past.
Natty Garden

This Brooklyn-based plant store pays homage to the borough by incorporating its culture and style into their selection of plants as well as their welcoming and cheerful atmosphere. The goal of the Natty Garden is to create a transformational and inspiring nursery that provides quality products for avid gardeners and beginners alike. The shop keeps basic year-round tools in stock as well as an assortment of plants and materials that change with the seasons. Business owner and principal designer Neffi Walker created this New Jersey-based home decor brand. Walker's vision was to design and curate a space where Black—both the color and the culture—could be celebrated in ways they haven't before. The Black Home celebrates Black artistry, creativity, and excellence.
Southern Elegance

Founder and CEO D’Shawn Russell grew up surrounded by the smells of her small North Carolina town. She began making candles that were reminiscent of her southern living roots as a way to have a creative outlet for her nostalgia. The positive response to her candles resonated with her, pushing her to take her newfound passion and create Southern Elegance Candle Company. Southern Elegance strives to create candles and bath products that capture life in the south: growing up in small towns, spending summers with Grandma, working in the fields during the week, singing in church on Sundays, sipping sweet tea to cool off from the summer heat, canning jams and making cobblers from the fruit trees in the yard and enjoying the simple life.

The brand brings together pieces from marginalized groups all over the world with the goal of helping artisan entrepreneurs sustain jobs in their communities.
Tara Jayne Designs

This Pennsylvania-based brand was created by Tara Warrick. Tara Jayne Designs creates artfully-made concrete home accents. A project born from the pandemic, Warwick wanted to find a way to connect with people through her creations. Without any formal background in design, Warwick started playing around with a few different ways of creating home goods. After some trial and error, she discovered that concrete is the medium she wanted to work with—and today, Tara owns and operates her Etsy shop full-time.

My Ankara Love

UK-based Wumi Afolabi is the creative behind My Ankara Love, an Etsy shop specializing in custom-made home furnishings and accessories. Wumi opened her Etsy shop in 2016 but had an increased desire to have more African print in her home during the 2020 lockdown. This desire sparked her latest line of home products—which features lampshades, throw pillows, kitchen aprons, and more—made from beautiful, vibrant, African print fabric.
Candice Luter

Candice Luter's business initially started as a self-taught hobby before transforming into a full-fledged business that creates unique and luxurious home accents. Luter was named the grand prize winner of their Etsy Design Awards in 2021 and, today, runs her small business with a talented team of women, producing their one-of-a-kind, macrame-inspired art and mirrors that add a little extra glamor to any space.

Black womanhood is at the forefront of this business and present in every design your heart may desire.
Tal & Bert

Tal & Bert was founded in February 2020 by husband & wife duo, Ray & Val Talbert. Their company rapidly grew from their home studio into a two-studio company with a brick-and-mortar storefront. Their designs are made from hand-poured concrete that has been sculpted by hand in small batches and is inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, finding the beauty in imperfections.
