We were sent the Blueair Blue Pure 311 Auto Air Purifier so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.
With three kids and a cat, an air purifier is an essential item in my home. We have units set up in every bedroom and the room with the cat’s litter box. But I have always been hesitant to set up an air purifier in our main family room or front sitting room because of how bulky and industrial they can look. When our Blueair Blue Pure Auto unit arrived, it was nice to have a fashionable piece of decor that cleaned the air really well.
To start the air purifier, I just had to plug it in and press the power button on the top. Other air filters often have knobs and dials, which can be cumbersome and unappealing to look at. The Blueair Blue Pure 311 Auto looks sleek and is easy to operate—both features that I liked. While it wasn’t silent, the noise level was comparable to most air purifiers I have tried.
The Blue Pure Auto performed exceptionally well, removing noticeable odors from our home. I made a curry dish for dinner one night and left the air purifier running in the background in a nearby room. When my family came home after our evening walk, the house was free of any residual odors. Instead of being smelling food waste or cooking remnants, I was greeted by fresh air.
This unit uses a three-part filtration system. The first layer, the fabric cover, is a big part of the stylish appeal. We got Arctic Trail, a gray cover, but you can purchase one of four other colors to suit your style. The pink would look great in my daughter’s nursery, while the green or blue are nice, muted colors that would suit a lot of different styles. Don’t count out the included Arctic Trail color as boring, though. It is a great neutral. The basketweave provides just enough texture to make it on-trend.
This pre-filter layer has a velcro fastening to hide the power cord, making it even more appealing for someone like me, who hates the sight of messy, disorganized cords. It comes off to wash when needed. After the air passes through this layer, it goes through an activated carbon filter, which catches the cooking and pet smells (common in my house) and small particles. The final interior filter catches the smallest particles, such as pollen, dust, and pet dander.
You will need to clean or replace the filters periodically, which depends on how often you use it and the overall quality of the air that it is cleaning. The Blue Pure Auto has an LED indicator that tells you if your air quality is good, moderate, or polluted. Without an independent reader or tester to test the quality of my home’s air, I liked having a feedback light included to know when I needed to change the filter. This setting also adjusts the fan as needed to keep the air clean as part of the auto feature.
The Blue Pure 311 Auto is ideal for a medium-sized room. Blueair states that it can filter the air around five times per hour in a 388 square foot space, roughly the size of a large bedroom, living room, or playroom. I tested the air filter in my home office, master bedroom, and kitchen to see how it performed. It noticeably filtered odors, dust particles, and pollen in all of these spaces. There are other sizes available, depending on your needs. The Blue Pure 311 Auto is a good mid-sized, versatile air purifier that can handle most rooms in your home.
My husband suffers from seasonal allergies that can keep him up at night. He slept through without any stuffiness when the air purifier was running. Fortunately, it was quiet enough to let him enjoy his night’s rest as well. The Auto feature does adjust the fan, which results in some change to the noise level. If you are a light sleeper, this might be enough to disrupt your sleep. But it did not cause any problems for me.
The Blue Pure 311 Auto is a good mid-sized, versatile air purifier that can handle most rooms in your home.
With so much emphasis being placed on protecting our homes and ourselves from illness, it’s no surprise that the Blue Pure Auto is in high demand. I did have to wait longer than normal for my air purifier to arrive, but I was so happy that I did. If you need an air purifier immediately, you may need to look for a more widely available product.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to assemble?
Assembly only takes as long as you need to open the box, pull the unit out, and plug it in. It was so simple and easy that I was almost afraid that I had missed a step. The included start-up instructions told me that I was ready to go, and the LED air indicator light reassured me that my air purifier was doing its job right away.
Does the air filter come with a warranty?
Blueair provides a one-year limited warranty, which you can extend to two years by completing the product registration included with your purchase or through their app. This easy step provides additional peace of mind that Blueair will work to ensure that your unit performs just like it should.
What makes this model different from other Blueair products?
Blueair has a range of air purifiers, including the standard Blue Pure line, a Classic line geared toward allergy sufferers, an advanced HealthProtect line that works against germs and viruses, and a Pro line for workspaces. The auto adjustment feature on the Blue Pure 311 Auto is great for those who want their air purifier to respond to the current air conditions without the need to change the settings manually. This model also has premium pre-filter fabric, a velcro tab to hide the power cord, and an air quality indicator display.
How long will the filter last?
Blueair estimates that you will need to change the filter every six months, based on routine use. The filter's longevity depends on the air quality that it is filtering, so your actual replacement time may be shorter or longer. New filters cost $39.99 and are available through Blueair. Considering this additional cost only comes up a couple of times per year, it is not a significant added expense to operating the filter.
Blueair Blue Pure Auto Air Purifier vs. Hamilton Beach TrueAir Compact Pet Air Purifier
I use the more affordable Hamilton Beach TrueAir Compact Pet Air Purifier in the bedrooms in my home. This model is available for around $59.99, similar in size to the Blueair Blue Pure Auto at a fraction of the cost. It cleans the air well, although it doesn't have a carbon filter. It is louder when used on the highest setting. Because my children prefer to sleep with white noise, this is actually a benefit for us. This model can be used vertical or horizontal, offering additional options that the Blue Pure 311 Auto can’t.
In spaces where the decor is a bigger consideration, I would choose the Blueair Blue Pure Auto. It looks nicer and filters better than many other models. The Blueair Blue Pure Auto comes in two different sizes and price points, so the smaller 411 model for $119.99 may be the right balance of price and performance for you. If you’re looking for something that you won’t want to hide behind a curtain or chair, spending the extra money on the BlueAir Blue Pure Auto is the way to go.
