Free Printable Op Art Checkerboard Chart

This is one of the free charted checkerboard patterns you could use to create the baby afghan square shown above. If you choose different yarns and colors, you could also use this chart to create other types of projects --  pillows, throws, larger afghans, etc. Its uses are not limited to crocheting; you could also use it for other needlecrafts.

Note to Knitters: Crochet stitches come close to being square, while knit stitches do not. For that reason, this chart would give you different results...MORE for knitting than it would for crocheting. In order to make an actual square of knitted fabric using this chart, you'd need to knit more rows than shown on the chart. Also, the squares will turn out looking more like rectangles.

This is another version of the same checkerboard chart linked above; the only difference is that the colors have been re-arranged. This version will help you visualize what the outcome might be like if you shift the placement of light and dark colors in the design.

You can use this free chart to crochet the afghan square pictured above, or another craft project of your choice. If crocheted in cotton yarn, this design would make a lovely dishcloth. I am sure you can think of plenty of other creative ways to use the pattern.

You can crochet this checkered headband in two tonal colors, as shown, or perhaps in two contrasting colors if you prefer. It's a fun pattern to use for experimenting if you'd like to check out how different yarn colors work together. I crocheted my sample headband in Cascade 220, a yarn with a diverse palette that's ideal for colorwork. Feel free to substitute any similar yarn if you like.

If you're looking for a crocheted checkerboard pattern that is not worked from a chart, check this one out. At first glance, this looks like a tapestry crochet project, but it isn't; the checkered design is created by joining small individual crocheted squares.

This is an original crochet pattern by Andrea Lyn Van Benschoten.
