Chinese dumplings, also known as Jiaozi, are a staple dish in Chinese cuisine and culture. Some of my fondest memories from when I was a child in Taipei was spending weekend afternoons making hundreds of dumplings while drinking Chinese tea with my grandparents. In effect making dumplings is a social thing and while I now live in the UK I will spend an afternoon making dumplings with my family still while drinking tea. 

There are many ways to prepare Chinese dumplings with many different kinds of the fillings. You can find out how to make authentic, basic, traditional type of dumplings from my article “How To Make Classic Chinese Dumplings”. This article contained step-by-step procedures photos to show you how to fold dumplings. Of course, this article only demonstrates one way to fold the dumplings. There are also many different ways to fold the dumplings and I shall introduce different ways of folding dumplings in the future.

  • Dumpling Dipping Sauce
  • Recipe 1 Ingredients:
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 3 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon hot chili oil

  • If you like Thai flavours you can make this dipping sauce with a Thai twist. This dipping sauce might be the perfect sauce for your dumplings next time.
  • Recipe 2 Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh chili
  • 1 teaspoon lemon grass puree
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped coriander
  • ½ lime juice
  • ½ tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • ½ tablespoon fish sauce

  • This sauce is traditionally used as a dipping sauce for Chinese hotpots but it’s also delicious to dip your dumplings in. You can also add finely chopped chili in this sauce if you like spicy food.
  • Recipe 3 Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese Shacha sauce (沙茶醬), also known as Chinese BBQ sauce. I usually use “Bull’s Head” brand of shacha barbecue sauce.
  • 2 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped spring onion
  • 1 cloves of garlic, minced it
  • couple drizzle of sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • This recipe uses Taiwanese Hakka style kumquat sauce. This dipping sauce tastes sweet and sour with a citrus flavour from the kumquat. This dipping sauce is also great to go with boiled meat and chicken.
  • Recipe 4 Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon Taiwanese Hakka Style Kumquat Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 cloves garlic, minced it
  • 1 teaspoon sugar 

How to Make It

Recipe 1 Procedure:

Combine all the ingredients. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator until ready to use (use the sauce within 3 days).
