Once you get that first taste, cinnamon schnapps is hard to resist and this is especially true if you are a fan of hot cinnamon candies. This sweet, delicious liqueur is a popular ingredient for cocktails and shooters and brands like Hot Damn and Goldschlager have made the fiery schnapps more popular than ever.

What is Cinnamon Schnapps?

Cinnamon schnapps is a distilled spirit flavored with cinnamon.

It is often clear, though some companies add red color. This spirit is also high proof, ranging from 40-50% alcohol/volume (80-100 proof).

As far as the flavor of cinnamon schnapps goes, this is going to depend on the brand. The majority use the cinnamon flavoring associated with red hot candies and this profile is desired most when mixing drinks. A few brands, including Hiram Walker, use a more traditional cinnamon spice flavor that is no less appealing, it simply has less heat.

Fun Fact: In 2010, Hiram Walker released Original Cinn Schnapps. It was a delicious cinnamon roll-flavored spirit that was unlike any other cinnamon schnapps. Also, at 90 proof, this liqueur did pack a punch. However, it seems as if it is no longer produced. If you do see it, grab it!

This is also one style of liquor that relies heavily on what can best be described as marketing gimmicks, which are fun and useful when you're playing around with drinks.

  • The 24K gold flakes of Goldschlager are a great example and it's a fun way to add either elegance or whimsy to a drink's presentation.
  • Brands like Hot Damn! focus on a bright red, super hot cinnamon profile and more of the "party on!" attitude.

Goldschlager is one of the drier cinnamon schnapps available and can be considered at the high-end of the class.

Many of the others are sweeter than a traditional schnapps and a few can get too sweet.

Common Brands of Cinnamon Schnapps

  • Aftershock
  • Defrost
  • Firewater
  • Goldschlager
  • Hiram Walker Cinnamon Schnapps
  • Hot Damn! (DeKuyper)

The majority of cinnamon-flavored distilled spirits are labeled as schnapps. On occasion, you will find a great 'cinnamon liqueur' such as that under the brand name The Old Liquor Store.

You may also come across Liquor Quik Goldrush Cinnamon Schnapps. This product is the 'essence' of cinnamon schnapps and is designed to allow you to make your own replica of Goldschlager, flakes and all.

Cinnamon schnapps should not be confused with the many cinnamon whiskey liqueurs available. However, I wouldn't hesitate to substitute something like Fireball for the likes of Hot Damn or Aftershock in most drinks. I would not, on the other hand, consider any of the cinnamon 'whiskies' a substitute for Goldschlager.

Cinnamon Schnapps Cocktails

Cinnamon schnapps is nothing short of fun when it comes to mixing it into drinks. It can be used in sophisticated cocktails and is often featured in warm and cozy drinks. Be sure to spike your hot apple cider with a shot of schnapps, it's perfect on a cold night!

Cinnamon Schnapps Shots

Cinnamon schnapps is also a popular ingredient for creatively designed shooters. In reality, it's used to create some of the best tasting shots you'll find and every one of these is a winner in my book.
