If you are hosting a party this summer, this citrus white wine sangria recipe is a must. Easy to prepare (and also to drink!) white wine sangria is a great addition to your menu. Our version is not as sweet as the traditional red wine sangria and has a refreshing citrus twist.
Thinking about making white wine sangria for the colder months of the year? Perhaps as a holiday drink? No problem! This recipe can be adapted for any season. For the holidays we like to add a cinnamon stick, or sometimes a star anise or a handful of cloves. Experiment, as good sangria simply needs good ingredients!
- 2 750 ml bottles of dry white wine (such as Spanish Rueda, Verdejo or Albariño)
- 2 12 oz cans of any lemon-lime soda (or substitute lemonade-- homemade is best in that case, see homemade lemonade recipe here)
- 3 oz triple sec (or a similar orange flavored liquor such as Gran Marnier)
- 1/4 cup sugar (You can adjust this based on taste and add more if you like a sweeter drink. You can also add a natural sweetener such as honey.)
- 2 oranges, sliced into rounds
- 2 lemons, sliced into rounds
- Options: spices such as a cinnamon stick, star anise, or cloves
- Slice the oranges and lemons into round slices about 1/8 inch thick. Place them in a large punch bowl or the largest mixing bowl you have. Add the sugar and the white wine. Mix everything thoroughly to dissolve the sugar. If using spices for a holiday white sangria, add them here.
- Add Triple Sec and stir. If you are making this ahead of time, chill the wine and soda beforehand and do not add the soda until your guests are about to arrive. Add the two cans of soda and stir. Taste and adjust sweetness. If needed, add more sugar. Make sure that the sugar is completely dissolved. If preferred, add the sugar as a simple syrup instead.
- If you are serving from a bowl, add lots of ice to the bowl to chill completely. If you are serving in pitchers, put lots of the ice in the pitchers first, then pour the sangria slowly over the ice.
- If you like a fruitier punch, cut up peaches, strawberries and/or other summer fruit and mix into bowl.
- To make a tangier flavor, squeeze an orange or lemon into the bowl and stir. This gives a more intense citrus flavor. Grapefruit can also be used for a lovely citrus addition.
- For a summer drink you can also add fresh herbs such as mint or basil.
