There are significant advantages to having a glass door on your oven. A solid glass oven door—or even a glass window—looks sleek and modern and offers a view of what's cooking in the oven without opening the door and allowing heat to escape. The disadvantage of a glass door or oven window comes when that glass is dirty with food splatters, baked-on grease, or finger smudges. Fortunately, this tempered glass, usually two layers thick, can be cleaned with just a few supplies you have in your pantry.

Learn how to clean a glass oven door outside, inside, and between the layers of glass.

Before You Begin

Before cleaning your oven or the glass door for the first time, consult the appliance manual provided by the manufacturer. If you don't have the manual, search online. This will give you specific instructions for your model. This is particularly important if you need to clean between the glass panels which may require removing and disassembling the door. Disassembling the door can invalidate the oven's warranty.

How to Clean the Outside of a Glass Oven Door

  1. Wipe Away Spills

If the oven is hot and you spill food on the outside of the glass, use a dry microfiber cloth or paper towel to wipe away the food particles. Do not attempt to thoroughly clean the glass while the oven is hot.

How to Clean the Inside of a Glass Oven Door

  1. Tackle Food Spills

If the oven is hot and you spill food on the interior glass of the oven, sprinkle the spill with salt to help absorb the moisture. If you can safely wipe away the spill with a paper towel, do so. If not, leave the spill until the glass is cool.

  2. Time the Cleaning

    • If cleaning the entire oven manually, save the interior glass door for the last step to remove any cleaning drips.

  3. Remove Tough Baked-on Grease

If you haven't cleaned the glass recently or ever, there are probably baked-on grease and splatters.

    • Make a paste with baking soda and a few drops of water. Spread the paste over the glass and allow it to work for at least 10 minutes.
    • Use a microfiber cloth or a non-abrasive sponge to gently scrub the glass.
    • Mix a solution of one part of distilled white vinegar and four parts of water. Dip a clean lint-free microfiber cloth in the solution and rinse away the baking soda paste.
    • Dry and buff the glass with a microfiber cloth to a streak-free shine.

When to Call a Professional

If the area between the door's glass panels is dirty, an oven repair technician can assist you in disassembling the door without damaging the glass, the insulation, or the seal around the door. The technician can also offer advice on proper cleaning between the glass panels.

How Often to Clean a Glass Oven Door

Spills and splatters should be cleaned away as quickly as possible so that they don't become baked on by the heat of the oven. Outside smudges should be removed as part of your daily kitchen cleaning routine.

The frequency of oven cleaning depends on how often and how you use your oven but the interior should be cleaned each time you use it. Cleaning between the layers of glass is usually not necessary unless you have spilled food on the door and it has seeped between the glass through the vent openings.

Tip

The cleaning methods for glass oven doors can also be used to clean the glass doors of self-cleaning ovens, toaster ovens, small convection ovens, and microwaves.

Tips to Keep Your Glass Oven Door Clean Longer

  • Cover food with a lid, foil, or parchment paper when using the oven.
  • Clean the glass door regularly to prevent greasy build-up.
