There are a few Coffee Old-fashioned recipes out there and, unfortunately, many are subpar in today's culture of superior coffee drinks. Why would you use instant coffee when there's fresh espresso and quality beans around?
That is why I'm happy to have come across this recipe in Stew Ellington's . It is an improved version of a similar drink I have enjoyed before and I really enjoy the use of espresso and cacao, which are a fantastic match with most any bourbon.
If fresh espresso is beyond your capabilities, you can substitute regular coffee. In this instance, use 2 1/2 ounce of coffee to take over both the espresso and water in the recipe below. That said, a good cup of espresso can be made without a big machine, the moka pot is a great alternative.
