The Coop Sleep Goods Original Memory Foam Pillow was the first product released by the brand back in 2013. The founders were committed to creating the perfect pillow that could adjust to every sleeper’s needs and would also be safe for allergy sufferers. (They’ve since gone on to introduce different versions of their memory foam pillow, as well as pillowcases and mattress protectors that adhere to that same philosophy.) To see if their version of the ever-popular memory foam pillow lived up to the hype, we slept on the pillow for several nights to see if it was really as breathable and comfortable as it claims. Is the pillow worth its high price tag? Read on to find out.

Material and Weave: Ultra luxe and soft

This exterior shell is made with the brand’s signature Lulltra™ fabric, a sustainable combination of bamboo-derived rayon and polyester. Overall, the outside feels smooth and luxurious to the touch. The inner shell, which houses the medium-firm fill, is made from polyester.

The pillow comes vacuum-sealed in the company’s branded white and gray box and must be inflated; leave it out to “rest” or throw it in the dryer on low for 20 minutes. Once puffed up, it feels expensive and well-made. The pillow had a slight odor when first out of the box, but this disappeared when we laundered the outer shell. The pillow is also hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites.

Fill: Down-like, cozy, and soft

The Coop Sleep Goods Original Memory Foam Pillow is made with a blend of microfiber and CertiPUR-US® foam—a certification indicating it doesn’t contain toxic chemicals. Additionally, the Original Pillow is GREENGUARD Gold-certified, which means it meets strict standards for low chemical emissions.

The individual pieces of foam inside this pillow are larger and softer than others we tested, making them easier to remove or adjust without making a mess. The foam has a fluffy feel—similar to a down-filled pillow—and it even comes with a bag of extra foam for those who prefer a denser cushion. The foam is an off-white, creamy color that’s much more appealing than fill used by other memory foam manufacturers.

Washing: Simple to maintain

The Coop Sleep Goods website has specific care instructions which are incredibly comprehensive when compared to other memory foam pillows on the market. The company recommends fluffing the product by hand every morning to help it retain its shape, as well as washing the outer shell every week or two. Throw it in the dryer on low once a month for 15 to 30 minutes to refresh, and don’t wash the entire pillow more than once a year. Also, memory foam is temperature-sensitive, so if you keep your room colder than 65 degrees, your pillow may start to feel firm. However, you can simply throw it in the dryer on a low setting to warm it up.

When we washed the outer shell, it retained its size and shape and easily fit back onto the pillow without any shrinkage issues. The shell stayed soft and dried quickly in the dryer.

Helpful Features: Guidelines for customization

The product comes with recommendations on how to customize your pillow based on whether you sleep on your back, stomach, or side—helpful since the pillow arrives with an extra bag of foam that you might not know how to properly incorporate. The brand also offers free loft customization if what they provided isn’t satisfactory. If you still don’t like the pillow after 100 nights, you can return it for a full refund. Price: Worthwhile for a pillow that’s a cut above the rest

The Original Memory Foam Pillow is luxurious in its design, feel, and presentation. This item is priced similarly to other top-rated options including the Xtreme Comforts Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow and the Snuggle-Pedic Ultra-Luxury Bamboo Shredded Memory Foam Pillow. Overall, we think it’s worth the investment.

Coop Sleep Goods Original Memory Foam Pillow vs. Snuggle-Pedic Bamboo Combination Memory Foam Pillow

The queen-sized versions of these pillows are the same price, but the Snuggle-Pedic’s king-sized version is more expensive than Coop’s. Overall, the Coop Sleep Goods product is a better value, in our opinion. The packaging comes with easy-to-follow instructions, and the product itself looks and feels higher quality. The additional fill is a bonus; other pillow manufacturers (including Snuggle-Pedic) do not offer extra foam unless it is requested. Plus, the mix of foam and microfiber gives the pillow a soft, sturdy feel that’s not at all crumbly, making it easier and less messy to add and remove at will.

The Coop Sleep Goods pillow is larger at 20x30 inches for the queen and 20x36 inches for the king. The Snuggle-Pedic’s products are 20x28 inches and 20x35 inches, respectively. However, Snuggle-Pedic does offer a smaller, “standard” size pillow, and Coop Sleep Goods does not.
