Cooking Frozen Chicken in the Crockpot

Chicken breasts and the slow cooker naturally go together. But the two sometimes don't get along! While the crockpot is a great environment for cooking chicken (it's wet heat), it's also fairly easy to overcook the meat, especially with the newer, hotter cooking slow cookers. Chicken breasts are low in fat, which means they can over cook in this appliance.

Food safety experts tell us to not cook frozen meat in the crockpot.

If you have a person in your family who falls into the high-risk category for food poisoning (very young children, pregnant women, the elderly, persons with compromised immune systems and chronic diseases), you would do well to heed this advice. You shouldn't cook frozen chicken breasts in the crockpot for anyone that may be in these groups.

Newer, hotter, slow cookers tend to overcook food so you should check boneless or skinless chicken breasts after about 4 hours. The internal temperature of the meat should be 165°F.  Measure the meat's temperature with an accurate meat thermometer for food safety reasons.

If the chicken breasts are frozen when they go into the crockpot, check them at 6 hours. When you understand how your crockpot cooks (since every appliance are different) you'll be able to figure out optimal cooking times.

These easy recipes can be changed by using different vegetables, different spices, fruits, sauces, and cheeses.

Remember that the slow cooker tends to mute flavors so you may want to add more dried herbs or seasonings at the end of cooking time if you think the recipe is a little bland. Enjoy!
