Summer is the perfect season to throw open the windows and get started on those projects you’ve long had on your list but don’t quite know where to start. In an effort to spark some inspiration, we turned to Drew Scott, DIY aficionado, blogger at Lone Fox, and YouTuber with over one million followers.

Along with his other platforms, Drew is also active on TikTok, where he shares daily DIY ideas. We asked Drew to give us the low down on some of his favorite projects that he suggests trying at home.

    Faux Marble Bookends

We love a good contact paper hack, and this one is particularly genius. “Using contact paper is an easy DIY alternative [rather than] spending [a lot of money] on marble décor," explained Drew. “I made these simple marble bookends for five dollars, using just contact paper and three different size wood rectangles.”

In the video, Drew shows how he covers the wooden blocks in marble printed contact paper before gluing the three blocks together with hot glue. Note that he uses a marbled contact paper with a bit of a shine for the ultimate faux finish. “They make the perfect accent piece to any shelfie!”

    Making 'Leather' Out of Paint

File this one under “see it to believe it.”

Using an old armchair, Drew tested out a concoction that gave the dated fabric a whole new lease on life. “Using equal parts paint and fabric softener, I was able to paint the chair to look like leather," said Drew. "It doesn’t crack and the chair still feels just like fabric!

    Cozy Corner Makeover

If you’re looking to upgrade a space but getting crafty isn’t your thing, Drew shows how rearranging a few key pieces can refresh an entire corner of one room. “Every now and then we need a quick little home refresh!” explained Drew. “With the help of a few accent pieces, I completely transformed a bland corner in my dining room.”

Using a faux leather armchair (or one painted to look leather, as above!) and a geometric bookshelf, Drew’s timelapse shows the power of well-placed accessories. Play with books, plants, art, and smaller accessories like candlesticks and baskets for maximum impact. “A styled bookshelf makes all the difference!”

Play around with adding softer textiles like throw pillows and blankets, and see how the whole aesthetic changes.

    Trendy, Painted Seashells

This DIY project is made for summer! “I’ve been seeing this seashell trend everywhere and decided to put my own spin on it,” explained Drew. “Using acrylic paint, I painted fun little abstract patterns on the inside of each shell. Once dry, I painted over them with Modge Podge (decoupage glue) to secure everything.”

Any craft project that calls for a trip to the beach is definitely one we’re willing to try. And as a bonus, “these painted shells make the perfect little trinket dish or gift!” said Drew.

    Tiled Nightstands or End Tables

Everyone loves a trendy IKEA hack, and this one is no exception. “The tiled furniture trend has been all over Pinterest and Instagram!” said Drew. But of course, along with their popularity comes a heavy price tag. “The pieces can range for $600 and up.”

Instead of splurging, Drew turned to IKEA. “I decided to recreate the look for less using IKEA BESTÅ cubes and tile I found at the local tile store. I made these easy DIY nightstands for Natalie Noel's bedroom.”
