Electric grills simply cannot compare to charcoal or gas grills when it comes to authentic flavor and cooking experience. The Downtown Grill Electric Hibachi, however, is a revolutionary step in the right direction. Using their new ThermoCeramix technology, this just might be the most evenly heated grill of any kind ever made and with a maximum temperature around 700 degrees F/370 degrees C, its heat rivals the best gas grills.

While relatively expensive, this is a professional piece of cooking equipment that can be used indoors or outdoors and is perfect for those who don't have the space for a full-sized grill or cannot use charcoal or gas.

Expert Review - Downtown Grill Electric Hibachi

Electric grills have always been a compromise for those people who either don't have an outdoor space or are restricted from using gas or charcoal. Electric won't produce the authentic flavor that we seek in outdoor cooking and generally cannot produce the kinds of temperatures needs to sear a steak or give good grill marks.

The Downtown grill Electric Hibachi is the exception when it comes to heat and performance.

This grill will not produce a strong smoke flavor in foods like charcoal will, but the evenness of the heat is simply amazing and it can hit temperatures that many gas grills can't. This is all due to a new technology called ThermoCeramix.

This is, put simply, a method of embedding a heating element directly into a surface. Typical electric grills use a heating element that heats an enclosed space, making hot air in which to cook. Some electric grills put the heating element in direct contact with the cooking grate so it cooks via contact heat. This electric grill has a special surface that heats uniformly across the entire area. Mounted on this is a wavy metal cooking surface that heats so evenly that it is the exact same temperature on the edge as it is in the middle of the grate.

I have to say that I have never cooked on any type of grill that has this even of a heat. You can load the entire cooking surface (about 155 square inches) and never have to move foods around to get them cooked at the same time. Add to this the 700 degree F/370 degree C maximum temperature and this is a steak grilling machine that is only rivaled by real infrared gas grills (as opposed to those produced by Char-Broil). For those that have to use electricity to fuel their grills or for the person that wants to grill indoors, this is the best choice on the market. It truly is an amazing grill.

This isn't the least expensive electric grill on the market, but it is reasonably priced.

It can be purchased directly from the manufacturer for a better price than most retailers list it for. It also can be a bit of a challenge to clean. The grill is a single piece unit and the cooking surface can not be removed for cleaning. The nonstick surface is rugged and the manufacturer assures me that a power drill couldn't scratch it so it can take some serious scrubbing, but it is a little awkward to clean.

It should also be noted that this is a small grill, like most indoor grills, though due to the efficiency and performance the entire surface can be used for cooking without spacing food so space isn't much of an issue unless you find yourself needing to cook a dozen steaks at the same time, which you probably won't.
