In feng shui, clutter is viewed from a slightly different viewpoint. Not only clutter complicates your life, disturbs the view of your home and steals precious time, it also steals your vital energy. Now, this is serious. Do you really want to let clutter drain your precious life energy?

I hope not!  Let me share with you a super effective feng shui clutter clearing system that really works. First, though, let's get very clear with what clutter actually is.

    What is clutter?
Feng shui definition: Clutter is low, stagnant, blocked energy that drains energy from you and lowers the quality of your life.

Down-to-earth definition: Anything that you do not use, do not like, or do not have a place for in your home IS clutter. Either use it, like it, find a place for it, or let it go. It's that easy.

Even if your place looks seemingly Ok on the surface and is not overrun by clutter, can you honestly say the same about your closets, your garage or your laundry room? How about the places that are mostly hidden, such as your kitchen cupboards, for example?

In order for this brilliant feng shui clutter clearing system to work, you have to promise yourself to be very brave and honest. The more honest you are, the more you will benefit from the powerful results of a new, fresh and potent feng shui energy in your home.

    • Step 3: Planning & Supplies for Your Clutter Clearing Session
    • Step 4: Instructions for Your Clutter Clearing Session
    • Step 5: What To Do with Your Boxes

Before we go over the clutter clearing supplies you need and the feng shui instructions for the actual clutter clearing session, there is one thing you absolutely MUST understand. This one feng shui element is crucial. Very simple, too.

If clutter is low, stagnant, and blocked energy, then what quality of energy can help you eliminate clutter? It's easy. The opposite of the low energy of clutter, of course! You have to be very clear with the feeling you want to bring to the space you are working on, and do your best to embody this feeling even before you start your clutter clearing session.
No clutter clearing sessions can be successful long term if this feng shui aspect is not understood and properly employed. If you do not really understand it, you are opening yourself to burning out, disappointment and endless complaints about clutter. Do not do that.
Here's the one "Must" condition for a successful feng shui clutter clearing session.

    1. Do not ever start a clutter clearing session, especially in an area that has been blocked by clutter for a long time, without first bringing beautiful, light, vibrant energy with you.

This can be anything that makes you feel good: from taking a shower and applying some make-up before your clutter clearing session to listening to your favourite music or placing a vase of fresh fragrant flowers close to you.

    Several other ideas:

    • Diffuse energizing essential oils in the air with an electric or a candle diffuser. You can also use an essential oils air spray. Peppermint, eucalyptus and/or lemongrass are the most popular oils for a clutter clearing session, but sure test different oils and see which one supports your vitality the best and energizes you the most.
    • If you are familiar with smudging, you can smudge the area before you start, as well as after each session. Or, use a natural herbal incense during your clutter clearing session. A small candle can help cleanse the energy around you, too.
    • Bring a personal crystal, or a powerful crystal formation close to you. You can also wear your crystals, something really simple to support your energy and keep you protected. A simple black tourmaline bracelet or a carnelian pendant can do wonders for your subtle energy.
    • Have live energy, energy that is in motion, such as music, a water fountain or fresh flowers; they will bring vital Chi to help eliminate the low and detrimental clutter vibes.
    • Sufficient and happy lighting will take good care of your energy, too. Do not work in the dark, bring in as much light as you can! (Please be sure to avoid overhead fluorescent lighting, as it will drain your energy and vitality even quicker than clutter does.)
Do not overlook the secret of bringing good energy with you, as without it, the chances of you really clearing your clutter are much, much lower. Trust me, I have worked with hundreds of clients by now to know what works and what does not.
If you truly understand the reason behind this energy interplay (bring strong vibrant energy to eliminate the low energy) and, more importantly, if you are excited about it and cannot wait to start, then you are ready for the next step, where the real clutter clearing work begins.Continue to Step 3: Planning & Supplies for Your Clutter Clearing Session

After you've read and accepted the preparatory feng shui clutter clearing steps, the current step of planning and getting the supplies for your session is a breath of fresh air! Light and easy, not much explanation is needed here, just follow the simple steps below.

    Planning:

    • Plan the time for your clutter clearing session(s). For the first three sessions, plan no more than 30 min per session.
    • Plan the time to treat yourself after each session. This IS mandatory, do not skip this step; clutter clearing is hard work, especially on the emotional level. A nice cup of tea with a friend, a movie or a walk by the beach, you decide.
    Supplies:
    • 3 boxes (or bags). Basically we will be sorting your clutter in 3 categories. Mark them accordingly as the In Box, the Out Box and the I Don't Know!!! Box. (The "I Don't Know" box is hugely important as you will soon see.)
    • A clock to watch the time. You want to stick to the exact time for each session, especially in the beginning.

OK, let's finally do some clutter clearing!

    • Step 3: Planning & Supplies for Your Clutter Clearing Session
    • Step 4: Instructions for Your Clutter Clearing Session
    • Step 5: What To Do with Your Boxes

Here is how this brilliant feng shui clutter clearing session works. All you have to do is stay with a rhythm, watch the time and commit to being there for maximum 30 minutes. (If you are brave enough you can go for longer sessions, of course!)

So, let's say you are facing a big pile of items you do not know what to do about. You cannot make one decision about them all, this is impossible. Here's what you do:

    1. Find an energetic rhythm that works for you and do not slow down. Active, energizing music can help, you can choose it ahead of time.
    2. Place the 3 boxes close to you. Re-affirm that you do not have to make any choices other than having the In Box (the item is needed), the Out Box (the item is not needed), or the I Don't Know!! Box (can't decide right now) filled.
    3. Pick up an item from your clutter pile and QUICKLY place it in one of the 3 boxes. If you are taking more than 30 sec to 1 minute to decide about an item, you are not doing it right (remember you have the "I Don't Know box", use it!)*
    4. Proceed in the same energetic rhythm with each item in your clutter pile until the session time is up. Do not slow down your pace, keep it the same throughout the whole clutter clearing session.
    5. Do not go over the initial 30 min. Once the time is up, you're done for the day. Pat yourself on the back and go have some fun. You did great!

The reason I say "QUICKLY place it in one of the 3 boxes" is because your initial reaction is usually accurate. If you hesitate and do not know what to do about an item, place it in the "I don't know" box, this is what this box is for.

Now, even if the only box that got filled during your first feng shui clutter clearing session is the I Don't Know Box, you still have done some really good work and, more importantly, have started activating and moving the stagnant, blocked energy of clutter.

The key is to stay with a rhythm, do it relatively fast, and end your session on time. This way you will build up a genuine enjoyment for clearing your clutter, and I assure you that with enough commitment you can be living clutter free in a few short months.

Here are some helpful things to know:

    • It is best to have a designated area for clearing clutter (if possible). So, instead of having piles and piles of clutter in many areas of your home, bring them all to a "clutter central" (in stages, of course!) and work from there.
    • There will definitely be items with strong emotional attachment (often entangled with confusion and guilt) that you will find difficult to deal with. No worries, just keep placing them in your I Don't Know Box until one day you know. (You might ask a friend for help with a particularly challenging I Don't Know Box).
    • It is best to plan at least one session a week (but no more than three).

What To Do with Your 3 Clutter Clearing Boxes (or Bags)

    • Step 4: Instructions for Your Clutter Clearing Session
    • Step 5: What To Do with Your Boxes

Depending on the amount of clutter you are dealing with, you will sure have more than three boxes (or bags). No matter how many you end up with, you are still looking at 3 choices: the In, the Out and the I Don't Know.

Here's what you do with each box:

    • The In box obviously stays in. However, with one condition: Only if you have space for each item. If you do not find proper space for each and every items in your IN box, you might have to let some of them go. After all, if you really, really needed them, why did they end up in the clutter pile?
    • The Out box goes out, of course. To charity, to friends, to a garage sale, whatever sounds right to you. The sooner it goes out, the better, do not keep the Out Box in your home for too long.
    • The I Don't Know is a challenging one. It is basically your therapy box. You might find yourself going thru the same "I Don't Know" box, session after session, with not much change.

If you are brave enough, here's what you do: close the "I Don't Know" box tightly, and take it to a storage place. Mark your calendar 6 months from now. If you do not even remember 6 months from now what is in that box, give it to charity without even opening it.

If this sounds too drastic to you, find a friend to help you go through the most challenging of your "I Don't Know" boxes. You might cry, you might get angry, you might feel whatever you might feel, but ultimately clutter clearing is also a strong clearing of old emotional ties, old emotional patterns and energy residues. So, take all the time you need to do that, and then follow the steps from the paragraph above.

Allow yourself to let go of unclarity, confusion and guilt. You deserve better than that.

And now, to the best part! Out with the old, in with the new!

Congratulations, you've made it! Be sure to pat yourself on the back after each session, because clutter clearing is sure not easy. For many people, it is like a run for freedom while still learning to walk. Your intent is all that matters, though, because the commitment comes right after it.

No matter how many clutter clearing sessions you had to do - two or twenty - doesn't it feel amazing to leave clutter free? Worth all the effort you put into it and more. A free flow of energy in your home brings untold benefits to your personal energy.

To avoid any accumulation of clutter in the future, establish a very good organizational system in your home (meaning every item has its own place), as well as have at least one clutter drawer.

Yes, yes, you do need one clutter drawer! This will help prevent clutter from accumulating in your home; just be sure to clear out this drawer often. You can also look into basic feng shui space clearing for your home, which helps prevent clutter from accumulating, too.
