These beef tacos can easily be made with ingredients you probably already have on hand: ground beef, lettuce, cheese, salsa and taco shells. And because I see no need to go to the expense of buying taco seasoning, these tacos are made with homemade seasoning. The benefit: You don't have to buy anything special, and you know exactly what's in it.

I like to serve these ground beef tacos as a taco bar. The kids really enjoy making their own tacos all by themselves.

What You'll Need

  • 1 tsp. canola oil
  • 1/2 cup finely-chopped onion
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 8 taco shells
  • Taco Fillings:
  • 2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 1-2 diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend (cheddar and Monterey Jack)
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1 cup guacamole

How to Make It

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook 3 minutes or until onion is softened.
  3. Add ground beef, breaking up with a spoon to brown on all sides.
  4. Add cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, salt and water. Stir and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile place taco shells on a baking sheet in the center of preheated oven. Heat 3-5 minutes until lightly toasted.
  6. Place taco shells, taco meat, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, salsa and guacamole in separate serving dishes. Let everyone build their own tacos, starting with a little lettuce in the bottom of a taco shell. Top with the ground beef, cheese, salsa, and guacamole.

Tacos are delicious every day--but have you heard of Taco Tuesday and ever wondered why Tuesday?

"Taco Tuesday is a custom in many US cities of going out to eat tacos on Tuesday nights. Restaurants will often offer special prices, for example, "$1 fish tacos every Tuesday night". It is popular in many big cities across the nation and especially popular in the beach cities of Southern California. Taco Tuesday is similar to Happy Hour in that restaurants vary in their participation, hours, and specials offered.

Legally, "Taco Tuesday" is a trademark of Taco John’s and other restaurants are prohibited from using that term."
