The Nine Patch Chain quilt block pattern, with its all-square patchwork, is an easy project for quilters of every skill level. I've included cutting instructions for two sizes, a 9" finished nine patch quilt block and a 13-1/2" finished quilt block.

Nine Patch Chain makes a wonderful scrap quilt, so mix up your patches and have fun combining fabrics. The diagonally flowing patchwork found in chain quilt blocks offers a tremendous number of layout possibilities. Be sure to experiment with design,...MORE and put the diagonal flow to good use when you design a quilt. Use a design wall or other flat surface to preview several layouts before you sew blocks together.

Small Nine Patches in the quilt blocks are strip pieced, so they go together quickly. Individual patch sizes are included as an option for anyone who would prefer to sew the small units together piece-by-piece.

Use Strip Piecing to Assemble the Small Nine Patch Blocks

Use a quarter inch seam allowance to assemble the quilt block.

    1. Find the narrow dark strips and white on white strips and sort them by length, grouping like-length strips together.
    2. You should have one white strip and two green strips that are longer than the others. Sew the longer strips together lengthwise as shown, left, placing the white strip in the center. Press to set the seams.

    3. Press the seam allowances towards the darker strips.

    4. Square...MORE up one end of the strip set and then cut six segments from it. For the 9" block, cut 1-1/2" segments; for the 13-1/2" block, cut 2" segments.

    5. Sew the remaining, shorter strips together lengthwise, placing the dark strip in the center as shown center. Press seam allowances towards the green strip.

    6. Square up one end of the strip set and then cut three segments from it. For the 9" block, cut 1-1/2" segments; for the 13-1/2" block, cut 2" segments.
    7. Sew a segment with a dark center between two segments with a white center as shown, right, matching seams carefully. Press.
    8. Repeat to make two more small nine patch units.
