This easy everyday cornbread is the perfect accompaniment to beans, chili, and greens. It also makes a great cornbread for cornbread dressing.

What You'll Need

  • 2 cups cornmeal
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar, more or less as desired
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 5 tablespoons butter, melted

How to Make It

  1. Grease a 9-inch square baking pan. Heat oven to 400 F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, and butter.
  4. Combine the two mixtures and stir until blended. Spoon into the prepared pan.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the center.
