Clean Up with Fans:
This super easy Feather and Fan dishcloth (which could also be knit shorter to make a washcloth) is a great way for people who are intimidated by lace to learn the basics.
The easy pattern only requires increasing and decreasing on one row of the pattern repeat; otherwise it's straight knitting and purling. Combined with a self-striping yarn you get a finished product that looks a lot more complicated than it is.
- one skein Lily Sugar 'n Cream or about 95 yards any dishcloth cotton yarn (I used color 21705, American stripes)
- one pair size 8 US knitting needles
- yarn or tapestry needle
About 22 stitches and 24 rows per four inches (5.5 stitches and 6 rows per inch) in pattern stitch. Gauge is not critical.
Finished size is 7 inches wide and 16 inches long.
- Cast on 36 stitches.
- Work in Feather and Fan stitch (see below) for 16 inches, or until you're about to run out of yarn.
- Bind off in pattern.
