Question: What can I feed my cats now that Natural Balance has been recalled?

I was feeding my cats Natural Balance because I thought it was a superior product and safe from the recalls because it contained no wheat gluten. Now that it has been recalled, I am at a loss. What can I feed my cats now?

Answer: The Natural Balance recall of Venison and Green Pea dry cat food shocked all of us, as it was the first announced cat food recall because of tainted rice protein concentrate.

The timing of these events was also confusing, in that Natural Balance had only recently changed their formulas, adding this rice protein concentrate to a previously "grain-free" limited ingredient diet. Natural Balance's recall press release assures consumers that the Venison and Green Pea dry cat food and the corresponding dog formulas are the only Natural Balance foods affected by the recall. Cat owners should not have to worry about other Natural Balance food. In fact, I continue to feed them to my own cats, as part of their weekly rotation of canned and dry cat foods.

People with cats prone to food allergies, such as IBD/IBS (Inflammatory Bowl Disease/Syndrome) have alternative choices, such as those on my Top Foods for Cats With Allergies list. Please note that I have left Natural Balance Venison and Green Pea at the top of the list, as it is one of the few limited ingredient cat foods that can be purchased without a prescription.

I have checked the ingredients for each of the other foods on this list, and none of them contain any grains whatsoever.
