Question: I keep reading in your feng shui articles about the need for space clearing. Can you please explain what is space clearing and how do I use it in my home?
Answer: Space clearing is used in feng shui very often. Even though not a traditional feng shui application, space clearing is sure becoming a part of contemporary feng shui work.
Space clearing means clearing the space on an energy level. It is an ancient art practiced daily in many old cultures - from India and Bali to Peru and Morocco - and there are numerous ways and materials used for space clearing.
The reason behind the need for space clearing is simple: just as on a physical level you see the dust and dirt accumulating in your home as a result of daily activities, the same happens on an energy levels. You may not see the "dust and dirt" of human emotions, but they do accumulate in any space, so it is best to clear them out regularly.
Generally, it is recommended to do a thorough space clearing session at least once a year in your home, or after intense events with negative energy, such as a divorce, for example. It is also very important to space clear a house that you just moved in, especially if it is a foreclosure house.<br/>A light form of space clearing can be used every time you clean your home on a physical level, as well as before and after your clutter clearing sessions.
Find your favourite, most enjoyable way of space clearing and use it often. For example, I know that many people are reluctant to smudge their place, but they gladly use essential oils for the same purpose. For those reluctant to use the actual sage smudge sticks, you will be happy to know that you can now buy a smudge stick in liquid from, so to speak. Meaning, there are air sprays infused with the energy of sage smudge sticks, and obviously using a air spray is a breeze!
Personally, I love to use a combination of space clearing types daily. I do like to smudge, but instead of a big smudge stick bundle I find it more enjoyable to use separate small stalks of sage. Sage feels deeply purifying and grounding to me.
After the sage I use a stalk or two of lavender in the same way, and the smell is just heavenly, very soothing and peaceful. At the same time I have a small tealight candle burning and usually have my essential oils diffuser going, too. This might sound complicated as you read it, but I assure you it is very easy, quick and enjoyable.
Another way I absolutely love is to use Palo Santo, the "holy wood" from a tree that grows in South America. It has the most beautiful, purifying and uplifting scent, feeling the energy of Palo Santo is pure pleasure. Along with sage and lavender, now I always use Palo Santo sticks, too.
Experiment with different ways and find what works for you. For the daily or weekly use, you want an easy space clearing solution that after a while becomes almost a habit.
